Don`t let Galen Weston Jr.`s charitable activities fool you. Don`t let

He wants you to buy food
at his stores to donate
to food banks.
Don’t let
Galen Weston Jr.’s
charitable activities fool you.
Galen Weston Jr. is president of Loblaw Companies Ltd.,
which owns more than a thousand grocery stores.
His salary in 2013 was $4.3 million.
The Westons are the second richest family
in Canada, with a net worth of $9 billion.
What keeps Galen Weston Jr. and his family wealthy—while
creating poverty and income inequality—is paying low wages
and low corporate taxes.
The Weston family foundation has given $22 million to the
Fraser Institute1, an organization that promotes low corporate taxes2.

QUESTION: Why does Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne
let Galen Weston Jr. (and other corporate CEOs) get away
with paying poverty wages and the lowest corporate income
tax rates in Canada?

Food for When
shopping in any Weston grocery store (Loblaws, Real Canadian
Superstore, Zehrs, Your Independent Grocer, Valu-Mart, Fortinos, nofrills,
Thought Wholesale Club or Shoppers Drug Mart), consider this:
Loblaws cashiers are paid as little as $11/hour — below the
poverty line! — and may not get the chance to work full time.
LOW WAGE WORKER
FOOD BANK
POVERTY WAGE
48,000 (12%) of the 400,000 people who go to food banks
every month in Ontario work at low-wage jobs.
LOW WAGE
At the checkout, you may be asked to donate $2 to Galen Weston Jr.’s
charity for children. Many Ontario children live in low-income families
because of low minimum wages or inadequate social assistance (welfare).
$656
HELP THE CHILDREN
A single person on Ontario Works (welfare) receives
a maximum of $656 per month. After the rent is paid,
often nothing remains to spend in any grocery store.
As you leave the store, you may pass a box where
Galen Weston Jr. asks you to donate food that you bought
— making a profit for him — so he can give it to a food bank.
