Studied by over 867,000 people in England, Wales and Northern Ireland last year, A-Levels offer one of the main routes into UK universities. Any A-Level that you study is made up of two sections: the AS (advanced subsidiary level) and A2 (advanced level). Both of these are qualifications in their own right and are worth UCAS points, which enable you to apply to University. Once you’ve completed your AS Level, you can either ‘cash in’ on those marks to gain AS Level certification, or pursue the A2 stage to ‘top up’ your AS to a full A-Level. A-Levels are typically assessed by examinations, coursework, or a combination of both. They are graded from A* to E. The UCAS points awarded for these different A-Level grades are shown in the table below: UCAS Points Tariff A-Level Grade UCAS Points A* 140 A 120 B 100 C 80 D 60 E 40 Source: www.ucas.ac.uk Awarding Organisations AQA AQA is one of the three largest exam boards in England, awarding 49% of all GCSEs and 42% of all A-Levels nationally. Every year, over 3.5 million students study for AQA approved qualifications. EDEXCEL Edexcel is the UK’s largest awarding body, offering both academic and vocational qualifications to colleges and schools in the UK and internationally. OCR Oxford Cambridge and RSA Examinations (OCR) is another of the major UK awarding bodies. Over 13,000 centres each year deliver OCR qualifications, which include GCSEs, A-Levels, OCR Nationals and NVQs. 4 Why study A-Levels? Excellent reputation A-Levels have been in place since 1951 and are respected worldwide as a prestigious academic qualification. They are recognised by the best-performing universities across the world, including Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard. Widely recognised A-Levels have always been highly valued by many universities and employers. A-levels look respectable on your CV and demonstrate to employers that you have intelligence, a desire to learn, unique skills and interests. Modular assessment Unlike many other qualifications, A-levels are modular, which means that if you do not obtain the mark you had hoped for, you can normally re-sit that particular examination to achieve a better grade. This helps to reduce exam stress so that you can focus on learning to your full potential. Tailored learning A-Levels allow you to study the subjects that inspire and motivate you. As an A-level student, you won’t have to take any compulsory subjects like students on other equivalent diploma programmes, so the choice really is yours. At Open Study College you can choose to study any number of subjects, in any combination. We offer a wide range of A-levels across all the major disciplines, including: • Accounting • Business Studies • Critical Thinking • English Literature • Government & Politics • Law • Ancient History • Biology • Chemistry • Citizenship • Economics • Environmental Studies • Philosophy • Religious Studies • English Language & Literature • Geography • Health & Social Care • History • Mathematics • Maths & Statistics • Physics • Sociology • Psychology Any More Questions?
