Each week the Love Ladies read one-onone with the Kindergarten students. Recently, the school was given a cheque from the CWL to enhance our reading program. Thank you! Mindset: Messages About Success Listen for the messages in the following examples of success: “You learned that so quickly! You’re so smart!” “Look at that drawing. Is he the next Picasso or what?” “You’re so brilliant, you got an A without even studying!” Do you hear these as supportive, esteem-boosting messages? But listen more closely. See if you can hear another message. It’s the one that children hear: If I don’t learn something quickly, I’m not smart. I shouldn’t try drawing anything hard or they’ll see I’m no Picasso. I’d better quit studying or they won’t think I’m brilliant. After seven experiments with hundreds of children, we had some of the clearest findings I’ve ever seen: Praising children’s intelligence harms their motivation and it harms their performance. How can that be? Don’t children love to be praised? Yes, children love praise. And they especially love to be praised for their intelligence and talent. It really does give them a boost, a special glow—but only for the moment. The minute they hit a snag, their confidence goes out the window and their motivation hits rock bottom. If success means they’re smart, then failure means they’re dumb. That’s the fixed mindset. Stayed tuned next month for sending messages about process and growth! Miss Belanger’s Notes: A very big CONGRATULATIONS to the members of the Renfrew Children’s/Youth Chorus who competed at the Pembroke Music Festival on Wednesday, March 4th. The choir placed first with an amazing mark of 92%! (The second highest mark of the WHOLE festival!) Parent Tip How to support positive mental health at every age: The adjudicator had high praise for our students, noting that their performance of one song was “note perfect” (a phrase he says he had not yet uttered at ALL at the festival this year, and only once or twice before in his WHOLE LIFE! WOW!) and that they had wonderful balance in their sound and strong harmonies; they worked as a great “unified ensemble” and truly “lived the song” as one. Now the students are busy preparing for the Renfrew Music Festival, where they will compete on Wednesday, April 15th, as well as their annual Spring Concert which will be held at OLF School gym on Sunday, May 3rd at 2:30pm. The choir practices once a week, on Tuesday evenings, at Our Lady of Fatima School. If you are in Grade 4 & up for next September, you are able to audition for a spot with the choir at the end of May. You can contact the choir at renfrewchildrensyouthchorus@gmail.com for more information. Miss Belanger is so incredibly proud of all the students, and would like to mention especially those from Our Lady of Fatima School: Kaylee Coles, Sarah Mayotte, Emma Robertson, Kennedy McCallum, Gabrielle McNulty, Jayden O’Brien, Kayla Winters, Megan Winters & Hannah Visutski.
