Guided by some of Canada’s top music educators and supported by many volunteers, we’ve helped to build the Yukon’s vibrant music scene and national reputation for rearing fabulous musicians. Come and join us at Yukon College and the Yukon Arts Centre. Spend an unforgettable week learning from an outstanding faculty and playing music with others. From ages three to ninety-three, from beginners to professionals, from rock to jazz – everyone can find a perfect class at Yukon Summer Music Camp. Not sure where you would fit in? Age and experience requirements are listed for each class. Class participants are rarely at exactly the same level of skill or knowledge and our instructors prepare lessons for a range of abilities and experience. Some lesson material may be challenging for you, while other parts are a review. Focus on how you can get the most out of your class. Supervision Options 1. Children are not supervised outside of class times. Parents must take full responsibility for their children before and after classes and during the lunch break. 2. NEW! Jazz Combos include one to three horn players, plus a rhythm section. Start with some basic blues, add some improvising, progress to jazz and see where the music takes you. A degree in Music Composition and more study in education added to her skills. She has spent many years playing every style of gig, including solo jazz, blues bands, accompaniment, television shows and studio work. She believes that music is a great language in which to communicate and that the joy of playing with others is unequalled. Hélène Beaulieu Born in eastern Québec, Hélène has rapidly gained a place in the Whitehorse music community since her arrival four years ago. She received a Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance at l’Université de Montréal. Simultaneously, she developed an interest in banjo, ukulele, songwriting and improvisation. With her classical foundation and experience writing and playing in a variety of ensembles, she is in demand as a teacher, performer and composer for theatre and other projects. Hélène is part of the James Hill Ukulele Initiative, a three year certification program which trains teachers for teaching music literacy through the ukulele. Greg Bush Greg is a professor of music at Vancouver Island University, teaching Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Composition, Instrumental Conducting and Pedagogy, and Music History. Originally from Montreal, Greg holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Concordia University and a Master of Music in Jazz Performance degree from McGill University. Greg is also a busy freelance jazz trumpet player, arranger and composer. In addition to playing in big bands accompanying such artists as Big Miller, Paul Horn, Dizzy Gillespie and Bob Brookmeyer, Greg’s own big band and quintet have performed his original compositions in jazz clubs, concert halls and festivals across Canada and abroad. Trish Clair Trish is co-director of the thriving Cross Canada Fiddle program alongside pianist/fiddler Geoff Horrocks. Their studio is home to more than 70 Suzuki violin, piano, fiddle and guitar students. Trish and Geoff also run a weekly group fiddle program in Nanaimo for beginner to elite players of all ages and have published instructional books for students of traditional fiddle and piano. Trish holds a Bachelor of Music (violin performance) from the University of Western Ontario, and has completed Suzuki teacher training across North America. She has released two solo fiddle CDs, one of which was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award. Trish also performs regularly with the Sonora String Quartet. Nicole Edwards Nicole blazed her musical trail as an independent, unplugged songstress. With a voice that is equal parts grit, smoke and confection, she has garnered a reputation as the North’s premiere folk-rock-jazzblues diva. Nicole has shared the stage with Bif Naked, 54 40, the Sam Roberts Band and Ken Whiteley, and has earned a West Coast Music Award nomination and an invitation to perform at their televised gala. Nicole loves sharing her enthusiasm for songwriting, whether she’s facilitating workshops, participating in song circles or co-writing. 18 | www.yukonmusiccamp.ca ~ Monday July 29 – Saturday August 3, 2013 at Yukon College and Yukon Arts Centre ~ Jon Heaton Jon completed his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies at St. Francis Xavier University and his Bachelor of Education with a specialization in music at the University of Lethbridge. He studied the Orff method with Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney and has been teaching music in the north for seven years. When he’s not teaching music, you can see Jon playing jazz, rock and bluegrass around Whitehorse on his string bass. Brenda Lee Katerenchuk Brenda Lee has been entertaining Yukoners for over 18 years with her brand of jazzy vocal interpretations and skilled finger-style guitar arrangements. She has been teaching all styles of guitar for over 30 years and is enthusiastic about helping students discover meaning in music and an appreciation for creative expression. Brenda Lee holds Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education degrees from Queen’s University. Andrea McColeman Andrea has been a part of the Whitehorse music community for two decades. She is a multiinstrumentalist, arranger, composer, teacher and mom. Andrea received her Bachelor of Music degree in percussion from Wilfrid Laurier University and studied jazz piano at Humber College. She has played, recorded and toured with countless groups, as percussionist in orchestras and chamber groups, keyboard player in blues/jazz groups, zydeco accordionist, and everything in between. Karin Plato Nominated for two Canadian Jazz Vocalist of the Year Awards, a West Coast Music Award and a Juno Award, Karin has definitely made her mark on the Canadian jazz scene. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in piano and voice from the University of Saskatchewan, studied jazz and arranging at Capilano College and the Banff Centre for the Fine Arts. For the past 15 years, Karin has performed at festivals and in concerts, and taught workshops across Canada. Composer, arranger, vocalist and teacher, Karin brings her passion for jazz to all her students and audiences. Karl Schwonik YAMAHA Drum Artist and legally blind drummer, Karl Schwonik, has been called “...a marvel of smoothly intricate and creative timekeeping.” Still in his 20’s, Karl has completed over 20 tours throughout North America, including Carnegie Hall and the John F. Kennedy Center. In demand internationally as a guest artist and instructor, Karl has taught students of all ages at over 200 educational institutions. Karl received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta’s Emerging Artist Award, the VSA Arts International Young Soloist Award, the AFM International Diversity Award, the Queen’s Jubilee Award, and was named one of Calgary’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’ (2009) by Avenue magazine. Steve Slade An accomplished vocalist, guitarist and harmonica player with a “big” voice, Steve performs on concert hall, festival and coffee house stages from northern Yukon to Newfoundland. For the past 15 years his summer months have been spent at home in Whitehorse producing the concert series, Arts in the Park. Many of his choral works have been published and his music is performed worldwide. Brian directs Vancouver’s 100-voice City Soul Choir, teaches singing and choir at Studio 58—Langara College’s professional theatre school, and sings with the a cappella world music trio, TriVo. Brian frequently offers singing and choir workshops, and is in demand worldwide as a clinician and facilitator. A passionate advocate of music-making at all levels, Brian creates a safe, welcoming, and joyful environment for singers of all levels. Anne Turner Anne studied classical piano, viola and organ and completed her degree in Secondary Music Education at the University of Alberta. In the 90’s, she took up bass and completed three years in Jazz Studies at Vancouver Island University. During her 25 year high school band/choral/composition and jazz teaching career, she won a Juno for Outstanding Music Educator for Canada. Anne is an active part of the jazz scene in Whitehorse. Jordy Walker Jordy has been working with music and sound for over 15 years. Having produced or performed on over 20 albums, he is in demand as a producer and recording engineer. A versatile multiinstrumentalist, he has toured theatres, clubs and festival stages from Inuvik to St. John’s, and performed in experimental underground clubs in Vancouver and classical recital halls in Ottawa. He now specializes in performing and producing a kind of electronic music that incorporates live acoustic and electric instrumentation. Robert Walsh Robert is an award-winning singer/songwriter, producer, guitarist, musical director and composer/ arranger with a music degree from McGill University. He is the regular guitarist for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, and has released four solo albums, written three musicals, and co-written and produced many songs and albums for other artists. Robert teaches Songwriting, Theory and Ear Training at Grant MacEwan University and gives workshops all across Canada. He has performed with the Pointer Sisters, Tom Cochrane, Renée Fleming and Johnny Reid. Deborah Ziolkoski Deb has a Bachelor of Education (Music major), a Master Orff level from the University of Memphis and over 22 years’ experience as a music specialist. She is the author of the Fun with Composers Teacher Guides, which are internationally being integrated into elementary music and piano curricula.
