For the 4th year running, thousands of school students from across Sydney made their way to the Great Hall at UTS to explore the jobs of the future. The ‘Big Day In’ event is a growing tech careers conference designed by students and facilitated by the ACS Foundation.
Run over 2 days, the event brought together technology companies, universities, schools and over 1,500 high school students. The common purpose being to predict the jobs of the future and help students select the skills needed for those jobs. Each day kicked off with the ACS and Microsoft providing insights into our near future using machine based learning and holographic technology which will infuse every aspect of our lives.
Wisetech Global discussed the practical work opportunities that await students in the tech sector. Seventeen year old Teigan Nield eloquently shared with students how he transitioned from school to work experience. Many other organisations including IBM, Westpac, CBA, Adobe, TCS, and Telstra also pulled back the curtains and helped students see the pathways and opportunities that await them. Each session included a Q&A component, so students could ask questions directly to the companies. Additionally, during the breaks, students talked with graduate and HR teams about work experience and the transition from school to work.
Following lunch, students were enthralled with animation and effects insights from Animal Logic – animation creators of the Lego Movie, Happy Feet, 300, and the Great Gatsby. Animal Logic have recently conZirmed they will be animating two more Lego Movie spin-­‐offs in Sydney – a $120 million boost to our economy which includes creating thousands of jobs. The day also included visits from The Flash and many prizes and giveaways, including an Xbox One, HP Stream 8’s, and Rasberry Pi’s.

With the mining boom winding down, it is important that students develop skills that will serve both themselves and our country well into the future. Tech skills are a global skill set that are needed in fashion, retail, manufacturing, entertainment, sales, and nearly every industry one can think of.
Since this is such a critical area, key organisations have joined the ACS Foundation in supporting the ‘Big Day In’. The Australian Computer Society, Digital Careers and the Australian Government sponsor this initiative in addition to the 100+ participating companies and educational institutions.
The ‘Big Day In’ is growing beyond Sydney, to other metro and regional Australian locations. This year, the ‘Big Day In’ will visit Ballarat, Melbourne, Canberra, Gold Coast, Newcastle, Wagga Wagga, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. These events will run between March and July 2015 and over 5,000 students are expected to attend.
“Work experience opportunities are more than just rhetoric. The Australian Government provided students with IT Cadetship information for over 15 government departments. The ACS Foundation also awards over 350 work placements annually”, said John Ridge Executive Director ACS Foundation. The ACS Foundation was established in August in 2001 to encourage both private and public sponsorship of IT higher education and research. By increasing funding opportunities for industry to contribute to education programs, the Foundation seeks to create a highly skilled workforce, able to effectively access research and industry speciZic training. Cisco has announced the investment in a Cisco Internet of Everything (IoE) Innovation Centre in Australia. Cisco’s IoE Innovation Centres are aimed at catalysing and showcasing IoE innovation and development, bringing together customers, industry partners, start-­‐ups, application developers, accelerators, government organisations and universities. The new Centre in Australia will be one of eight globally including Rio de Janeiro, Toronto, Songdo, Berlin, Barcelona, Tokyo and London. The ofZicial opening of the Centre is planned for 2015 and will include locations in Sydney at Sirca, and in Perth at Curtin University. Cisco intends to invest US $15 million over Zive years into the Centre, reafZirming its global pledge and commitment to new economic growth through technology innovation around IoE. Cisco experts, together with industry partners and ecosystem start-­‐ups, will develop proof of concepts, features and functionalities, and do rapid prototyping. The Centre will include dedicated space to demonstrate IoE in action and open areas where customers, start-­‐ups, open communities, researchers, entrepreneurs and technology enthusiasts are invited to work and brainstorm on new ideas and technologies. The initial ecosystem partners of the Cisco IoE Innovation Centre, Australia, currently include Sirca (owned by 40 universities across Australia and New Zealand), Curtin University and Woodside Energy. “Australia is a sophisticated market with a high level of innovation and an early adopter of new technology. Australia is already highly regarded globally for its resources and agriculture sectors and is well-­‐placed to serve the rapidly growing Asian markets, and the Australian government has prioritised these sectors accordingly. Cisco has been involved in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project for over Zive years. The aim now with Cisco IoE Innovation Centre, Australia and its ecosystem of partners is to accelerate innovation and the adoption of the IoE in Australia,” said Irving Tan, Senior Vice President Asia PaciZic and Japan at Cisco.
Wynyard Group Board approves
dual listing on ASX
Wynyard Group, crime-­‐Zighting software and services provider, has announced that its board has approved the company pursuing a dual listing on the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) and it will now commence the process. Wynyard Zirst listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange (NZX) in July 2013. Wynyard Group CEO Craig Richardson said, “With a signiZicant part of our revenue and growth coming from the Asia PaciZic Region and a growing number of Australian investors, seeking an ASX listing is a logical strategic move for the company. “Listing on ASX will enable more Australian and foreign investors to hold Wynyard stock, participate in the company's growth and increase the attractiveness of Wynyard shares. We also expect it will increase our proZile with Australian customers and the board believes that dual listing will beneZit all shareholders.” It is expected that the process will complete during the third quarter of the 2015 calendar year. Wynyard Group intends to maintain its New Zealand incorporation and its principal listing on the NZX Main Board.

VentureCrowd opens equity
crowdfunding door to more
startups
VentureCrowd, Australia’s original equity-­‐based crowdfunding platform, has announced a new partnership with Sydney Angels, a pioneering angel investor group, that will give more Australian startups the opportunity to access venture capital from sophisticated investors at an early stage. Sydney Angels, a group of more than 70 high net worth investors, will refer startups to the VentureCrowd platform that can beneZit by crowdsourcing funds from sophisticated investors. It is one of the most successful groups of its kind, and the only angel group in Australia with a dedicated sidecar fund, worth $10 million. Since 2008, Sydney Angels has made more than 35 investments, of between $200,000 and $500,000, in companies such as Ingogo, Venuemob, Posse and DriveMyCar Rentals. The partnership will help to grow the number of startups that could join the VentureCrowd platform, which has already been used to fast-­‐track growth in companies such as Ingogo, Fame & Partners and CrowdMobile. “The Sydney Angels are passionate about identifying ‘the next big thing’ in a variety of sectors, and we are excited to leverage their due diligence skills and expertise as well as their highly methodical investment process for investors on the VentureCrowd platform,” said Tim Heasley, chief operating ofZicer at Artesian Venture Partners.

Nearly 80 percent of all businesses fail their interim PCI compliance assessment, leaving them vulnerable to cyber attacks, according to Verizon’s 2015 PCI Compliance Report.
With more than two-­‐thirds of all purchases made with payment cards and $20 trillion in credit card transactions expected for 2015, security has become a top priority for organizations that accept credit cards. By reducing the likelihood of being breached, companies can better manage their brand, ensure consumer trust and potentially avoid hefty fees. In fact, 69 percent of all consumers are less inclined to do business with a breached organization. This year’s Zindings indicate that only 29 percent of companies are still fully PCI DSS-­‐compliant less than a year after being validated. While annual compliance and ongoing control standard maintenance remains low, there is a bright spot in the 2015 report. Almost twice as many companies were validated as compliant during their interim compliance review in 2014 as compared with 2013. According to Simonetti, “The three key areas where organizations fall out of compliance are: regularly testing security systems, maintaining secure systems and protecting stored data. Of all the data breaches studied, Verizon’s Zindings clearly show that not a single company was fully PCI DSS-­‐compliant at the time of the breach.” Additional key Zindings from the report include:
• Between 2013 and 2014, compliance increased for 11 of the 12 PCI DSS controls or, in other words, 60 percent of companies assessed in 2014 were compliant with any given Requirement.
• The average increase in compliance was 18 percentage points.
• The biggest jump in compliance was in authenticating access (Requirement 8).
• The only area where compliance fell was testing security systems (Requirement 11), from 40 percent to 33 percent.
Another troubling trend from this year’s report is that data security is still inadequate, said Simonetti. The volume and scale of data breaches in the past 12 months is proof that current security techniques are not stopping attackers — in many cases they aren’t even slowing them down. PCI DSS compliance must be viewed as part of a comprehensive information security and risk-­‐
management strategy. A PCI DSS assessment can uncover important security gaps that should be Zixed, but it is not a guarantee that the data is safe from a cyber attack. This year’s report covers three years of data and includesthe results from PCI assessments conducted by Verizon’s team of PCI QualiZied Security Assessors for Fortune 500 and large multinational Zirms in more than 30 countries. In the report, Verizon offers an in-­‐depth analysis of each of the 12 PCI requirements, including a look at compliance against the 3.0 standard, with an eye toward the soon-­‐to-­‐be-­‐released 3.1 standard. The 2015 report also includes details of how and where companies fall out of compliance once achieved, and recommendations on how to make compliance easier, featuring actionable recommendations for enterprises that want to stay PCI compliant. BAE Systems Applied Intelligence has appointed Rajiv Shah as General Manager for Australia to focus on executing the business’ growth strategy in Australia, particularly in the government, Zinancial services, telecommunications and energy sectors. Rajiv has more than 16 years’ experience in the technology industry, working with commercial and government sector customers to design and implement leading edge information intelligence solutions which help organisations in the hyperconnected world to protect and enhance their critical assets. Rajiv started at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence in 1996 as a technical consultant. He has held several positions with the company across the UK, US and Australia including: Head of Operations, National Security business unit; Head of Delivery and Operations, Electronic Systems Group; Head of Communications, Data and Security Solutions; and Telecommunications Sector Lead, Asia PaciZic.
