I am a consultant neonatologist with experience predominantly in tertiary care, although have
extensive earlier experience in general paediatrics. My particular expertise is in neonatal intensive
care, with special interests being brain injury, circulatory management and infection.
Graduated Monash 1978, FRACP 1984. Trained at Queen Vic MEd Centre and RCH in Melbourne,
subsequently in Department of Child Health, Liverpool University in UK.
Intensive care is a team discipline, involving medical staff, nursing staff, allied health and (very
importantly) parents and families. I have developed a particular interest in the psychological care
of families and clinical staff, coupled with an interest in Bioethics and Perinatal Palliative Care.
I am Chair of the PSANZ Perinatal Palliative Care Special Interest Group, the key goal of which
is to develop perinatal palliative care more widely and in a way that effectively meets the needs
of families from all cultural and religious backgrounds.

Program Coordinator
Infant and Children’s Funerals
Since February 1995, Julie has worked as a Funeral Planner, Funeral Director, Branch Manager – and
for the last thirteen years Julie’s primary responsibility has been working with and caring for client
families who have experienced or been touched by the death of a baby or child. This area of care
sees a natural extension of her professional working background which has, in past years, included
Nursing and Child Care.
Julie oversees a continuity of care to Tobin Brothers and Frances Tobin Funerals by Women families,
which may include hospital/home visitations, transfer of baby or child, encouraging and assisting
in the provision of inspired parental/family time, the aiding and nurturing of precious memories
and experiences primarily via the provision of options, guidance and empowerment through
funeral choices.
Another of Julie’s most important focal areas is the funeral service itself. Julie is well known for her
creative and unique presentations of infant or child funerals services, which empower families to
celebrate and acknowledge their baby’s or child’s life, no matter how brief.
In addition to working alongside bereaved parents and families, Julie has shared her wisdom in
academic circles through lectures, conferences and workshops in hospitals and related agencies.
Countless midwives, teachers, social workers, nurses, pastoral carers and fellow funeral directors
have benefitted from her experiences, mentorship, the provision of resource materials, guidance in
review of hospital policies and best practice regarding the care of babies of all gestations.
