Cemetery Note: Brick Graves
Our cemetery has several old brick
graves that are in serious need of
maintenance in order to preserve
them. We are asking parishioners
to contact the parish office at 3632989 if they know who these graves
belong to, or if they know a means
of contacting the next of kin. Over
time, the markers on these graves
have become illegible or have been
removed.
Reminder: During the penitential
seasons of Advent and Lent, which
prepare us for the feasts to come, we
mark that penitential preparation by
not exchanging the sign of peace at
Masses.

PRAYER FOR THE YEAR OF CONSECRATED LIFE
O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives
of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and
obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these
courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of
holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you.
Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who,
having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above
all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with
you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen
SUNDAY: 22 MARCH: THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT
From the Pastor
“My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is
that they may be saved.” Romans 10:1
Mes chers amis,
On this 5th Sunday of Lent, the pruning of our senses
takes another step as the statues in church are covered
in violet. We already find ourselves one week away
from the beginning of the most sacred week of the
Church’s Liturgical Year - Holy Week. It will begin with
Palm Sunday (next Sunday) and then move into the
Sacred Triduum - the three days on which the Church
most solemnly celebrates the passion, death, and
resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Unfortunately, in many places today, a reductionist
mindset has set in, leading people to think that
the liturgies of Holy Week are too long or not very
important anyway. On the contrary, they are essential
to our Catholic identity and our spiritual lives. I want
to challenge you, if it is at all possible, to attend the
liturgies of Holy Week and especially, the Sacred
Triduum.
On Palm Sunday, we commemorate the entrance of
Our Lord into Jerusalem for the final time - to suffer
and die for our sins. We recall that many of the people
who greeted Him with “Hosanna” are the same ones
who later cried out “crucify Him!”. We carry our palms
associating ourselves with those who greet Him with
joy at one time and betray Him through sin at another
time. We recognize that we are one with them whom
Jesus loved and died for.
On Holy Thursday, we celebrate two of the greatest
mysteries of our Faith: the institution of the Sacred
Priesthood and the Holy Eucharist. These two gifts of
the Lord to His Church are so closely bound that there
cannot be one without the other. Without Priests, we
do not have access to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass or
the Lord’s Sacred Body and Blood in the Holy Eucharist.
We show our love for Jesus in the Holy Eucharist by
bowing down before Him in adoration.
On Good Friday, the Church celebrates the day that
Our Lord Jesus died for our sins. There is no Mass
celebrated out of respect for His one eternal sacrifice
offered to our Father on this day. We gather to celebrate
His Passion by listening to His Word, venerating the
cross, and receiving Holy Communion. It is a day of
prayer and penance.
On the evening of Holy Saturday, we gather in darkness
and begin the celebration of the “Mother of all Vigils”.
This is the Church’s most solemn night of prayer and
worship, celebrating the Crucified Son of God who
has been raised from the dead! We will hear in God’s
Word the history of our salvation. One person will be
initiated into Christ and His Church through Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist. All of us will be
able to sing the Church’s song of praise once again,
taking upon our lips the praise of the angels.
Again, I urge you, as Catholics, if possible, to attend
the great celebrations of Holy Week and the Sacred
Triduum. May Our Lady help us to understand better
and look forward to these sacred days that are coming.
Dans le Sacré Cœur du Christ,
Fr. Vidrine

PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING THE YEAR
OF CONSECRATED LIFE!
On the occasion of this special Year, Pope Francis has conceded
plenary indulgences, under the customary conditions:
the individual be in the state of grace by the completion of the
acts, have complete detachment from sin, and pray for the
Pope’s intentions. The person must also sacramentally confess
their sins and receive Communion, up to about twenty days
before or after the indulgenced act.
The period for gaining this indulgence began on the First Sunday
of Advent 2014 and will conclude on February 2, 2016, the day
of the closure of the Year of Consecrated Life. In the Diocese
of Lafayette a plenary indulgence may be obtained during
those days devoted to consecrated life and during diocesan
celebrations organized for the Year of Consecrated Life (by
participating in any Votive Mass for Consecrated or Religious
Life, Vocations Awareness, Jubilarian Mass, etc) or by visiting
any of the following designated places:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Lafayette
Saint Charles Borromeo Church, Grand Coteau
Saint Martin de Tours, St. Martinville
Mother of the Redeemer Monastery, * Plaisance
Carmelite Monastery, * Lafayette

In order to obtain the plenary indulgence, one must publicly
recite the Liturgy of the Hours (please note places that are
marked with an asterisk all have public recitation of the Divine
Office; please contact them for times) or devote a suitable
period of time for devout reflection, concluding with the Lord’s
Prayer, the Creed, and pious invocation of the Virgin Mary.
