SBSC Skills Development & Mentoring Assistance for Junior Sailors
Following a review of the Sunday morning junior program, we have made some
revisions; the coloured fleet system is being replaced by morning skills development
& afternoon racing. Junior sailors capable of sailing in races are encouraged to sail
in the afternoon races.
The Sunday morning skills development is for those wishing to practice sailing on
smaller race courses, alongside friends in a fun supportive environment. Once an
adequate level of competence has been achieved, sailors should challenge
themselves by racing in the afternoons. This will achieve a noticeable improvement
to their racing skills. Sailing more and for longer is the best method to advance
sailing proficiency. All sailors are welcome to sail Sunday mornings or afternoons or
both.
Juniors may sail in the afternoon in Division One against other junior sailors or under
their boat’s class flag depending on their development. Division One is a single
triangle race and is ideal for small vessels or young sailors building their strength.
The longer legs of these race courses can be testing, however they are real races
with lessons to be learnt each and every time they are sailed.
We also want the juniors to utilise the wealth of knowledge within the club’s senior
sailors, who are all willing to mentor developing sailors. SBSC has a number sailing
champions. In the yard seek out an experienced sailor and start asking questions!
Furthermore ask them to sail alongside you before & between races to provide tips.
It is possible in the future that the club may hire trained sailing coaches to specifically
address areas of required development for the majority of our sailors. Also the club
will appeal to individual associations for their experts to visit SBSC to provide
specific class tutoring. This will be driven by the number of registered association
members that are also SBSC members.
The Sailing Committee trusts that you find these revisions favourable. At all times we
encourage you to join the sailing committee, assist during the Sunday mornings skills
development, help to organise coaching options and help out during Sunday
afternoon racing sessions.
