Inclement weather can interfere
with the best made plans, resulting in having to cancel our February SAWA General Meeting
and also having to cancel the trip
to Nashville for the Regional
Auxiliary Meeting.
But in spite of the weather, the Auxiliary has
remained busy. The Nominating Committee
has been preparing the slate of officers for
2014-2015. The birthday parties at the Red
Shield and activities at the ARC have continued. Plans for our 2015 Fund Raiser are moving forward, and preparations for activities in
April and May are on track. See more info in
this newsletter.
Also, twenty-one SAWA members and husbands attended the SA Disaster Training and
became certified Disaster Volunteers!
And now coming up soon - the opportunity to
take a bus tour (on 3/13) of the various locations where we serve. Please be sure to make
reservations for this. Also - our March meeting on Thursday the 19th will be at Booth
Towers. I hope to see all of you there!

Everyday in the news we see the world around us and the lives that are
forever changed by the evil in this world. Today I want to share with
you that lives are being changed for the better through those whose mission is to “Do The Most Good” on a daily basis. I love the opportunities
that God gives me to see glimpses of hope when I see love in action
through the staff of those I get to work with, like Hillary Dejarnett and
her crew at Haven Atlanta. Recently I went to beautiful camp Grandview and had the chance to hear the stories of our ladies who are coming
through our Haven Atlanta program and I was Blessed beyond measure
as I heard the stories of restoration, forgiveness and freedom! I want to
share with you where we've been, where we are, and where we are going
as it relates to ending Human Trafficking. The excerpt below was taken
from our website:

“The Salvation Army has been providing services to victims of human
trafficking since 1884, when it first established a “Rescue Home” for
women and girls escaping sex trafficking and prostitution in London,
England. Now, more than a century later, The Salvation Army in the
United States and around the world is part of a revived movement for the
abolition of human trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. Our
efforts focus on four core areas: awareness-raising and training, public
policy advocacy, prevention, and trafficking survivor services. We participate in many local coalitions and working groups dedicated to ending
human trafficking, and are frequently called upon to provide food, shelter and clothing at a moment’s notice.

The Haven ATL (Haven Atlanta) program is dedicated to seeing the city
of Atlanta free of commercial sexual exploitation (CSE) and the damage

community. Atlanta has a thriving adult entertainment industry including strip clubs, lingerie and sex shops, escorts services, massage parlors
and street prostitution.

Our vision for Haven ATL is to rescue and restore by giving girls and
women a place to receive the resources they need to leave a harmful lifestyle, realize their worth and dignity, heal from the wounds of abuse, and
help others do the same. We also educate the community of Atlanta on
the reality of commercial sexual exploitation in our city, train and educate community leaders on the issue, develop prevention and intervention strategies, and strategically serve, investigate, and rescue women
and children out of commercial sexual exploitation through prayer, outreach and program service delivery.”

SAWA 2015 Fund Raiser
“125 Ways to Help”
In conjunction with
The Salvation Army’s 125th
Anniversary of serving in the
Metro Atlanta area,
we will be asking for monetary contributions
in the configuration amount of the number 125
($25, $50, $125, $1,250, etc)
and 12,500 volunteer hours
(all members combined) for the 2014-2015 year.
All monies raised go to support The SA service projects we assist with, as well as
an annual donation of $10,000 to Camp Grandview.

On April 24, The Metro Atlanta Area Salvation Army will
be hosting “Project Homeless Connect” at The Salvation
Army Temple Corps (2090 North Druid Hills Rd).
at
The SA Metro Area Command Center
1000 Center Place
Norcross, GA 30093
This is an event especially for the area homeless. There
will be free services, information, food, even hair
cuts. Service providers, such as Mercy Mobile, Mobile
Veterans units, recovery programs, housing programs,
parenting programs, etc. will be present - a total of approximately 45-50 service providers all in one location
for one day! There will also be a prayer tent, and the
SA Canteen will be on site with snacks and drinks. (Last
year we had a wonderful BBQ lunch for all who attended.)
The Salvation Army is providing tote bags for those attending - to use for carrying their hand-outs, as well as a
“toiletry kit” and socks for each attendee. We have
received a large donation from Johnson & Johnson (bath
products, lotions, etc) which need to be packed in baggies.
In addition to packing toiletry bags for Project
Homeless Connect, (see article) we will also be
packing Veteran’s Kits at our April meeting.
We are going to be very busy ladies!
We need everyone to come help.
So please plan to come and bring a friend.
We look forward to joyfully working together
to help the SA with these service projects!

The SAWA ladies have offered to pack these toiletry
bags at our April 16th meeting. We will also learn
more about this wonderful project and other ways we
might be able to help.
So be sure to put Thursday, April 16th (10:00
am) and Friday, April 24th (9:00 am- 12:00) on your
calendar and plan to join in as we joyfully serve together.
It means a lot to see how many hours we’ve spent
serving together joyfully!

Volunteer hours include the time from portal-to-portal to attend
meetings, conduct campaigns, fund-raising efforts,
provide services, prepare for and perform service projects,
emergency disaster work, etc.

The Adult Rehab Centers are funded by
your donated goods.
Our goal this year is to volunteer a total
of 12,500 hours !
That may sound like a lot, but we volunteered nearly 8,000
hours last year! And this year we have more opportunities
to serve. We are also trying to be more diligent with
keeping up with and reporting our hours.
So get involved in as many activities as you can.
And remember to keep up with your volunteer time and
report it at the end of each month to Casey
(contact info above).

Sign up now to assist with Birthday parties for the children at Red
Shield on the 2nd Saturday of each month.
The next parties are on March 14th, April 11th, May 9th from
1:00 - 2:30 pm. SAWA volunteers provide gifts for the children who
are celebrating birthdays, prepare “goodie bags” for the rest of the
children, and then assist with the party and enjoy games and crafts
with them. If you can help with any of these please contact
Linda Lakshas .
At our January SAWA meeting about the SA EDS, presented by
Major Jack Butler, 21 SAWA ladies & husbands signed up for the
EDS training classes - demonstrating a desire to learn how to help in
times of disaster. All 21 showed their commitment to this and their
reliability - just by getting to the class on a foggy, rainy morning in
horrific Atlanta traffic!
But it was well worth it. The class, presented by Jim Morrow, was
terrific and included a lot of very interesting information!
So we’ve taken the first steps of becoming Certified Disaster
Volunteers. It feels good to be a part of this great group of new
Disaster Volunteer Buddies!
The monthly Birthday party for the men at ARC is held on the last
Wednesday of each month. Join Marilyn and Chuck Schramm in
helping with these fun events.
There is an on-going need for volunteers to assist with the literacy
program at the ARC. This is such a rewarding way to give a hand
up so that the rehabilitated men can find jobs and build a new life
after they leave the center. Please consider helping.

Jewelry Sorting
at the SA Thrift Store
Bernie Holm is chairing the Jewelry Sorting project. This involves
learning to distinguish fine jewelry from costume jewelry. She and two
other SAWA members are being trained to help with this project.
Thanks to each of you who signed up to assist with this. If more help
is needed in the future, Bernie will contact you.
We will be having a Spring Fling at Booth Towers on Tues,
April 21th at 11:30 am. There will be lunch, birthday cake,
Bingo, and prizes.
