Encourage your child to check for accuracy if time permits Debbie Kiehne Deputy Principal Curriculum Corner Reading is a Problem-Solving Process “I define reading as a message-getting, problemsolving activity which increases in power and flexibility the more it is practised.” Marie Clay (2001) “Sounding out” is the least effective first action to problem solve in reading. Many words that are not spelled the way that they sound, and if children stop to sound out all of the words they do not know, their reading becomes slow and laboured, which in turn affects their comprehension. Three sources of information are integrated to construct meaning (comprehension) as part of the reading process. Good readers fluently use a balance of all three cues to create meaning. 1. Meaning – Did that make sense? 2. Structure – Did that sound right? 3. Visual information – Did that look right? Stay tuned for “Useful Decoding Strategies” in the next newsletter!
