2015-03-17-newsletter - Burnett State College

17 March 2015, Issue 7
From the Deputy
Principal’s Desk
The last few weeks has seen many sporting events, the Gallipoli: a manual of trench
warfare stage production and the investiture Ceremony for our School Leaders. I
would like to congratulate all students on their behaviour during these events as
they have represented Burnett State College. The director of the Gallipoli
production made very positive comments about the engagement of our students
towards the stage show (in extremely hot conditions). This is great to hear from a
company that tours most of Australia each year and performs at many schools.
Term 1 is now approaching an end, but the work rate remains as high as ever. All
students will have assessment for a number of subjects in the next couple of weeks.
Staff are in the process of marking this and completing Mid Semester Report Cards.
Mid Semester Report Cards will be issued in the first two weeks back after the
holidays. Following on from this will be the first round of Parent Teacher
Interviews. Parent Teacher Interview booking sheets will be included with your
child’s report card and need to be returned to secure a time slot.
Parent Teacher Interviews: Monday 4 May 2015 from 3.20 to 6.00pm.

Every Day Counts
Of concern at the moment is the amount of students who are missing days from
school for less than acceptable reasons. As a parent / guardian you have a legal
obligation to have your child at school for every possible day that the child can
attend. Students who are too sick to attend is an acceptable excuse. The excuses
that are causing concern are: “my child was tired so I let them sleep”, “they stayed
home to complete school work” or “they have a doctor’s appointment at 2pm so
they stayed home”. For a 2pm doctor’s appointment they could attend school until
lunch time and not miss four hours of teacher contact. We have a number of
students who attend doctor’s appointment and attend school either side of the
appointment.
Tuesday
A child who misses on average 1 day of school a week, over 1 year will miss nearly
40 days a year (8 weeks) = they would miss 2 years of school in their first 10 years
of school.

Industrial Design & Technology
Term 1 of 2015 is well and truly into the swing of the hammer. This semester we
have 4 classes running in the Industrial Design & Technology department – 9/10
elective The Great Outdoors, 9/10 elective Junior Engineers, Certificate I in
Engineering and LIFE Manual Arts. The students involved in these classes are
completing great work and taking their time to produce quality products.
The Great Outdoors
During this course students have been focusing on the process of
construction and creating a product from a demonstration model. The
product they are creating for this term is a collapsible camping chair;
students create their chair out of hoop pine and canvas. The construction
of the chair involves the students’ knowledge and skills of bridle joints,
mortise & tenon joints and dovetail joints. I’m sure your child would love
to tell you all about the three types of joints they have been studying. All
students involved in the course spent the first 3 weeks practising the skills
associated with constructing these joints using hand tools and machines,
before beginning their final product. Feel free to ask your child about any
of the tools & machines and how to use them correctly. Students have
also been working through two workbooks to assist them in the
construction of their chair and with their assignment; which is due in on
the 20/04/2015. Below are some photos of the tools they have been
using and some student work.

Junior Engineers
During this course students have been focusing on the process of construction
from a plan and designing a product. The product they are creating for this term
is a 3 compartment shelving unit; students create each compartment out of galvanised steel and then design and construct how they should be joined together.
The construction of the compartment involves the students’ knowledge and
skills of folding, cutting and joining metal. I’m sure your child would love to tell
you about all of the methods they have been studying. All students involved in
the course spent the first lessons ensuring they understand all safety practices
and some practising the skills of cutting, folding and joining metal with hand
tools and machines, before beginning their final product. Feel free to ask your
child about any of the tools & machines and how to use them correctly. Students
have also been working through a workbook to assist them with safety in the
workshop and with their assignment; which is due in on the 20/04/2015. Below
