Field Days are rescheduled for Thursday, May 14 from 9:00am-11:30am for students in grades 3, 4 and 5; and for Friday, May 15 from 9:00am-11:30am for students in grades 1 and 2. Please help students come to school on these days prepared for activity and fun. I recommend that students bring the following items to school for field day: wear your team’s color T-shirt (if possible); students will be notified their team color during PE class prior to their field day wear the proper footwear for activity wear sunscreen and a hat a water bottle with your name on it a change of clothes FOR 3RD, 4TH AND 5TH GRADES ONLY…the fire department is coming to spray students at the end of their field day Following Field Day activities, students will be having a “sack lunch” with their class. Students are encouraged to bring a sack lunch from home; however, the cafeteria will be selling sack lunches for those who wish to buy lunch that day. If your child is planning to buy a lunch on Field Day, you need to notify their classroom teacher by Friday, May 8. More information about preordering a sack lunch was sent home with students on May 1 in their Friday Folders. Kindergarten The Kindergarten classes have done a great job identifying same and different parts in music. We have learned that many songs have some parts that are the same. Listen to music at home with your child to see if you can both identify something the same (words, music, instruments) in any song. In May, the Kindergarteners will prepare for their performance on Tuesday, May 26 at 9:00am. 1st Grade The first grade classes learned many songs, games, and dances from Mexico during the month of April. Now students are learning about AB form (two sections that are different). They’re creating movements, improvisatory sections, and rhythm poems to short songs to give them a “B” section. Students will also be experiencing AB form with the district set of African drums that we will be able to use for a few weeks. In May, students will also practice identifying various classroom percussion instruments by listening. 2nd Grade The second grade classes have been focusing on songs that use the pitches Mi, Re, and Do. They have learned that “do” is a special note because it makes a song sound finished. Students have been singing, improvising, reading, and soon they will be writing their own songs with these notes in organized measures. This will help prepare them for recorder playing at the beginning of third grade because they begin with just three notes, B-A-G, which also function as Mi, Re and Do. 3rd Grade The third graders have done a fantastic job creating and performing their own compositions using question and answer form. They also organized beats into measures using a particular time signature, such as 4/4 or 2/4. In May, students will focus on playing, singing, and moving to sixteenth and dotted half notes. 4th Grade The fourth graders also did a terrific job creating and performing original compositions. They used an extended question and answer form and used a variety of rhythms organized in time signatures. They also learned about the instruments of the band and orchestra preparing them for fifth grade. In May, students are focusing on major and minor, as well as theme and variations form. 5th Grade Congratulations to the fifth graders on their concert, America’s Music! In May, students will preparing for Stepping Stones and learning about the Blues. 4 Mark your calendars! 8th Grade Continuation is scheduled for May 28 at 6:00pm in the Eldorado K-8 Gym. See you there as we say farewell and congratulations to our 8th Graders as they embark on their journey to high school! Mark your calendars! The last day of school field trips are as follows: 6th Grade--a day of swimming at the South Pool 7th Grade--a day of bowling at Chipper’s Lane 8th Grade--a day of fun at Gateway Park (north Boulder) We typically distribute yearbooks on that last day of school as well, so the students have some time to review their year and sign each other's yearbooks. Below are hyperlinks to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Weekly Updates. The Weekly Updates are "live" webpages that are updated by individual teachers every Monday afternoon to help inform parents/guardians and students about upcoming assignments, projects, and assessments. In order to most effectively use this tool, we encourage you to bookmark the web address listed below and make it a practice to monitor it early each week with your student. If you love reading and spending time with little kids, and you want to earn volunteer service hours in a way that will also develop your communication and leadership skills, then Lafayette Public Library’s Reading Buddies Program could be perfect for you! In Reading Buddies, rising 7th-12th graders (the Big Buddies) are paired one-on-one with 1st-3rd graders (the Little Buddies). They meet once a week to read together, play reading-related games, and do group activities. A strong rapport develops between the children and their mentors, and the volunteers have an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life while giving back to the community. Summer sessions take place on Mondays at 3:00pm, Mondays at 6:30pm, and Tuesdays at 10:15am, June 8 through July 28. You pick the session that works best for your schedule. Teen volunteers must submit an application by May 15, attend an interview, and participate in a mandatory training before working with a Little Buddy. You can apply online: http://www.cityoflafayette.com/readingbuddies or pick up an application in the library.
