2015 Honoree
Highly Accomplished Asian American Professional
Detective Fred Hom
Suffolk County Police Department and Foundling Father of the Suffolk County
Asian Jade Society
Suffolk County Police Detective Fred Hom is a first generation born Asian American. His father, Fred Hom Sr. immigrated
from China and his mother, Barbara Hom, is of Irish, Swiss, and American Indian decent. Fred was born in Brooklyn, New
York and shortly after, his family decided to make the move to Long Island and settling in Northport.
In 1985, Fred Hom became the first Asian American police officer to be hired by the Suffolk County Police Department. He
began his career in the Third Precinct patrolling the hamlets of Central Islip and Brentwood, which was one of the busiest
areas in Suffolk County at that time. His hard work didn’t go unnoticed. In 1987, he was transferred to the Narcotics
Squad and began working on numerous cases involving Asian drug gangs. He went undercover and made numerous
drugs buys leading to countless arrests. In 1990, he was promoted to Detective. He worked on a case with the Suffolk
County District Attorney’s Office and was successful in infiltrating one of the most dangerous drug gangs of that time. It
resulted in the purchase of kilos of cocaine and the seizure of numerous automatic weapons. In 1995, he was transferred
to the US Customs Task Force where he now serves as its longest standing member.
Detective Fred Hom has dedicated 30 years of his career to the citizens of Suffolk County. He has investigated hundreds
of cases on the local, national and international levels which resulted in hundreds of arrests and seized property. Safety in
the streets in Suffolk County is a direct result of Detective Fred Hom’s commitment to his profession.
In 2015, Detective Fred Hom became a founding member of the Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society. He serves to
foster relations between Asian American law enforcement officers and the communities in which they serve. Today, he
continues to serve in the capacity of Detective, protecting the citizens of Suffolk County, and a mentor between Asian
American police officers and the Suffolk County Police Department.

Recruitment
The Suffolk County Police Asian Jade Society
Board set out to Queens College in efforts to
recruit Asian Americans to apply for the Suffolk
County Police exam being held on June 13, 2015.
Police Officers Jeffrey Fong of the 2nd Precinct,
Edwin Hugh of the 6th Precinct, and Thomas Joy
of the Highway Patrol Bureau, along with 2015
SCAAB honoree Detective Fred Hom, devoted
their time to inform Asian Americans of the
benefits of becoming a Suffolk County Police
Officer and the expectations required by the
Suffolk County Police Department. Many potential
applicants were very receptive to the recruitment
efforts. Some have never heard of Suffolk County
police, but when advised of the salary and the
benefits the Suffolk County Police Department had
to offer, they were astounded.
We would like to thank Queens College Campus
Security for welcoming us to their campus upon
our arrival and allowing us to interact with their
student body. Without their cooperation, the
recruitment efforts on this day would not have
been a success.
