Gary S. Lipman CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER Dear YJCC Members and Friends, Things are looking up at the YJCC! By now, hopefully you’ve seen this new sign in front of our building and agree that our project to revitalize and reinvigorate your YJCC is well on its way to success. We’re making major improvements in our facility and investing funds in the development of all kinds of new programs to meet the ever changing needs of our members and program participants. This winter is an exciting time to be at your YJCC with new programs to serve nearly every age group. From the latest in group fitness to all new programs for adults; from the enhanced curriculum in our center for early childhood When you and your family come to your YJCC, you’re not just coming to a gym, a pool, or a preschool…you’re coming to a community, one in which each and every voice counts and one where you can make a difference. There are great things happening today at your YJCC…and with your continued engagement, even more great things are coming. Come visit and see our new roof…not just the one on top of our building, but the roof that your YJCC extends over our entire community. I’ll look forward to seeing you this winter. Stop by and say hi and share your ideas with me or with any member of our staff. We’re here to serve you and your family, so please let us know how we can best add value to your YJCC membership. While embracing Jewish values and heritage, the YJCC maintains an inclusive environment, celebrating diversity and welcoming the community at large to enhance mind, body and spirit through cultural, educational and recreational opportunities, without regard to race, religion or ability. our mission at work Early Childhood Education “…enrich and strengthen families” Our Mission 2 A study by Mark Rosen, Ph.D. of the Cohen Center for Modern Jewish Studies at Brandeis University outlined the high significance of the first years of a child’s life in cementing family patterns and friendships. Who needs a study?! Ask anyone whose child attended our David Rukin Early Childhood Center Nursery School and you’ll hear about the “friends for life” their children have made. In addition, the children, along with their parents, put down roots in a community of warm, caring individuals. Our nursery school excels at nurturing our children, enabling them to experience Judaism with all their senses while they explore, create, question and learn about themselves and the entire world. Self-awareness and self-esteem are developed while intellectual curiosity and critical thinking skills are cultivated, setting the groundwork for a lifetime of educational success. For information about our Nursery School, please contact Amy Nelson at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5662, anelson@yjcc.org. Special Needs “…maintains an inclusive environment…without regard to race, religion or ability” The YJCC offers children and teens with special needs year-round opportunities to reinforce school experiences, develop social and life skills and enhance self-esteem through creative, social and recreational activities. Innovative classes specifically for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder model social interaction, language and communication, and behavior by utilizing “peer buddies” and age-appropriate activities. Our S.A.I.L. program for those over 21 propels young adults with developmental disabilities towards independence and personal growth. Significantly, it is the philosophy of the YJCC that has enabled our special needs program to flourish. We celebrate diversity, maintain an inclusive environment and seek new ways to open our doors to all. This spirit of inclusion benefits not only those with special needs but our entire community. To volunteer in our Special Needs department, please contact Gina Wellington at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5810, gwellington@yjcc.org. Senior Adults “…meaningful experiences at every age and stage of life” Successful aging, studies show, is dependent upon healthy relationships along with healthy eating and exercise. Our senior adults have come to the right place! We offer opportunities to get involved, express creative inclinations, exercise the mind and body and achieve a sense of belonging to a very special community of people. The YJCC’s senior lunch program serves nutritious, hot, kosher lunches twice a week at a nominal cost. The senior lunch, subsidized through the Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey and the U.S.D.A., is more than a meal: Gathering around the table provides a great opportunity to socialize with peers. Monthly blood pressure check and regular nutrition programs are provided in partnership with The Valley Hospital. Body, mind and spirit are nourished at the YJCC. To volunteer in our Senior Adult department, please contact Linda Ripps at (201) 666-6610, ext. 5782, lripps@yjcc.org. early childhood Nurturing children while supporting parents is the mission of the YJCC’s David Rukin Early Childhood Center. While our Early Childhood program is located in its own wing with bright, colorful classrooms and an exceptional outside playground and play area, the children benefit from the entire YJCC facility, including the gym and pool. And they are fortunate to be in an atmosphere of warmth and community to which the YJCC is dedicated. Their dedication, creativity, enthusiasm and affection for children are hallmarks of our program. Children between 6 and 9 may be in the kiddie pool without an adult, but must be accompanied by an adult when in the main pool. ALL children 12 years of age or younger must be accompanied by an adult who remains in the pool area at all times to ensure proper supervision. For everyone’s health and safety and in order to maintain the cleanliness of the pools and deck area, please remember the following: All persons must take a soap shower before entering either the main pool or the kiddie pool. New Jersey State Health Department codes require the enforcement of this regulation in ALL public and private swimming facilities in an effort to minimize the bacteriological levels and optimize our method of disinfecting and sanitizing the pools. No street shoes, sneakers or strollers are permitted on the pool deck. Dirt and bacteria are tracked onto the pool deck, creating an unsanitary environment for swimmers who are walking barefoot. Anyone with hair shoulder-length or longer should wear a swimming cap to help prevent clogs in our filter and vacuum system. Disposable diapers are not permitted in either pool. Children not yet toilet trained must wear swim diapers underneath swimsuits and are not permitted in the main pool. Disposable diapers disintegrate when they become saturated with water. They are then sucked into the filter system and vacuum, clogging them and causing damage. When an accident occurs, it is necessary to close the pool in order to properly clean it. Bandages, band-aids and medicated patches may not be worn in either pool. Once wet, these coverings fall off and clog filters and vacuum. They are also unsanitary and possibly infectious. Any person with open cuts, wounds or blisters is not permitted to use either pool. Inflatable toys, rafts, swimmies, tubes, etc. are not permitted in either pool. Children who depend on these devices are at risk for serious injury if the device fails or the child gets out and goes underwater. Kick boards, barbells, noodles, etc. are only to be used in their intended manner and are NOT lifesaving devices. If being used improperly, a lifeguard will remove them from the pool. Aquatics CHILDREN’S CLASSES / 6 YEARS & OVER 25 Little Sharks Swim School Classes Swimming is difficult—but worth the effort to learn properly. Please note that your child may have to repeat a class in order to master the required skills as described below. Water safety and rules are taught according to age and must be followed in and out of the water. Nursery-Age Classes (3-5 years) Dogfish (Kiddie Pool) This introductory class, for children with little or no knowledge of swimming, builds confidence in the water without parental assistance. Children learn basic front crawl, back float and back crawl. Ability to do a front and back crawl at least 3 feet with a flotation required to advance. Parent/Child Lessons (All Kiddie Pool): Aquatics 26 Tadpole 1 (6 to 18 months) Parent must accompany child in the water. Child must wear underwater diaper. Class is designed to help not only the child get comfortable in the water, but also help the parent understand necessary safety measures. Tadpole 2 (12 months to 3 years) Child gets comfortable in the water, learns to blow bubbles, and begins to understand how to move feet and arms in the water. By end of the class, the child should be more comfortable in the water, as well as being able to blow bubbles. Tadpole 3 (12 months to 3 years) Much like Tadpole 1, becoming more comfortable in the water is a goal, as is being able to fully submerge face in the water, with the help of the parent. By end of the class, the child should be extremely comfortable in water without the parent so he or she can be ready to transition to the main pool. Angel (Main Pool) Swimmers master the front and back crawl/stroke for 5 feet with a flotation and be able to back float for 15 or more seconds. To advance, child must be able to complete front and back crawl/stroke for 10 plus feet and back float for 30 seconds with a flotation. Mako (Main Pool) In this final class for nursery age, children will continue to learn swimming safety as well as advancing in distance with front and back crawl. Beginning sessions will utilize a flotation device and master swimming a distance of 15 plus feet with front and back crawl. To advance, child should be able to swim 3 feet with no flotation. School-Age Classes (6 and up) Zebra (Main Pool) This class is for beginners of school-age who have little to no swimming ability, but also for those who have passed Mako. Skills learned include getting used to having face in the water and moving forward. Freestyle and backstroke will be introduced, with the use of a flotation. To advance, child should be swimming with no flotation on front and backstroke for a distance of 10 feet, as well as be able to jump into the pool feet first. Sandtiger (Main Pool) Child works on increasing distance and stamina, finalizing and finishing freestyle, backstroke and sidestroke with no flotation, jumping into the deep end of the pool, and swimming to the side with little help from the instructor. To advance, child should be able to swim freestyle and backstroke one length of pool each stroke (no stopping), and half a length sidestroke. Bull (Main Pool) Distance in freestyle and backstroke are the main goal of this class. The child also will be introduced to treading, diving and submerging underwater fully, along with the final two major competitive strokes, breast stroke and butterfly. Most of class will take place in deep end of the pool. To advance, 2 lengths of freestyle and backstroke must be completed, 10 meters of breast stroke, 5 meters of butterfly. Nurse (Main Pool) Child will work on breast stroke and butterfly, plus stamina for freestyle and backstroke as he/she gets ready for our most advanced class. To advance, child must be able to do at least 4 lengths of the pool using either of the strokes continuously. Blunt Nose (Main Pool) This is the most advanced level of swimming. Butterfly and breaststroke are further perfected to the ability of the child. We’ll also spotlight flip turns, competitive diving and starts. Child should be able to swim 3 lengths of freestyle and backstroke, 1 length of breaststroke and butterfly. This class will get your child ready for competitive swimming, if desired. Private and semi-private classes available for adults, too.
