F&S launching new ARM based modules
By Erik Sandholm, es@m-comp.dk
The all-new modules from F&S
in the Pico-ITX form-factor covers an even wider range of customer demands for easy start
and low-cost using the latest
ARM based CPU‘s
The concept of the ArmStone
PICOITX is to provide a small
form-factor SBC with standard
connectors for LAN, USB, HDMI
and SD cards. Using the built-in
feature connector, it is possible
to expand with extra I/O options
and connectivity. ASTONE is the
name of the adapter board providing extra RS232/485 and CAN
bus interfaces.
Specifications: armStoneA8
with WCE6.0/ WCE7 or Linux
Advantages are: Short design
time and cost-optimized solution options – ideal for most
customers that prefer not to
make their own baseboard design, a task taking up many
resources thus prolonging the
time to market.
ASTONE-ADP-UNI1
hours.
We will this year have focus on
our modules – in particular projected capacitive touch which
requires a lot of support in the
integration process, as well as
E-paper and transparent LCD’s.
All of these areas are the future
for many applications that until
today have not been able to implement touch or displays for
example due to requirements
for low power consumption or an
IP67 enclosure.
Apart from the above focus, we
will show more conventional
modules for industrial use, like
high-bright TFT panels, Industrial PC products either on board
level or as a complete embedded
solution. Such solutions can either be delivered as a complete
product from one of our suppliers, or we can do the assembly
on our own ISO9001:2008 certified factory in Hedensted.
Remember: Seeing is Believing
Please do not forget that MComp offers a wide range of
demo units which you can borrow to test technology which
your company may consider to
implement in the future. This is
all the way from ARM based units
with implemented P-CAP driver
and display, to E-Paper modules
in demo kits, or just conventional
display kits.

Easy test and development on EDT’s PCAP sensors
By Erik Sandholm, es@m-comp.dk
Bringing a PCAP sensor to life
in a design - or to test the features/functionality of the sensor - can be quite a difficult task
to solve. With EDT, M-COMP
provide extended support to
our customers. The EDT PCAP
sensor technology is based on
EDT’s own design using the
FocalTech controller.
EDT has produced a small HID
PCB (I²C to USB) for testing the
series EP0xx0M06 Capacitive
touch. The small HID print supports the EDT PCAP sizes 3.5”,
4.3”, 5.7” to 7.0”. The input from
the PCAP to the I²C to USB is
a 10-pin ZIF and a USB Mini-B
plug for the interface to a PC
with Microsoft Windows® 7.
Besides providing PCAP sensors for sample evaluation, MCOMP can also provide technical documentation with detailed
description on how to interface
and control the PCAP sensor.
The hardware is a Silabs F321
with a 8051 core. Upon attaching the USB board to the PC,
Microsoft Windows® 7 will start
up Flicks. Flicks is a small software program that comes preinstalled on Microsoft Windows®
7.
Following the documentation
step by step, customers will with
a functioning MCU platform with
I²C interface be able to bring up
the PCAP sensor in functional
mode in less than a days work.
Flicks has some predefined
functions, such as using single
tap or double tap with a finger.
Flicks also works with finger
gestures in a web browser with
a possibility to customize the
gestures.
If you wish to work with the PCAP sensor on a more detailed level
in a Windows environment EDT can also provide an interface
board which we have described in earlier issues of MOMENT.
This board gives full control on testing different settings on the
FocalTech controller such as gain, offset, threshold etc.

New Futaba VF-Displays
with touch function and
intelligent CIG controller
RECOM
– Your choice
for power
By Erik Sandholm, es@m-comp.dk
By Sune Meyer, sm@m-comp.dk
Futaba has released a new
graphic VFD product line with
capacitive touch sensors and
intelligent CIG (Chip-in-Glass)
controller. First display versions
are available with resolutions of
256 x 64, 128x64 and 125 x 85
pixels with up to 24 sensors.
Main advantages of Futaba VFD
touch sensors are cost efficient
construction, which is integrated into VFD manufacturing process, protected robust design
and possibilities for “Hidden until lit / Black Panel” effect by using plastic or glass front filters.
The new CIG controllers allow easiest software control and substantial display cost
reduction.
Key advantages of Vacuum Fluorescent Displays, which also apply for these new touch sensor
& CIC controller designs, are
excellent wide distance recognition and viewing angle as well
as wide operating temperature
of -40 to 85°C and fast reaction
time for smooth scrolling performance.
Different display colors can be
achieved by using multicolor
front filters.
Whether talking about LED driving or power conversion for AC/
DC and DC/DC, the product portfolio of German based RECOM is
a great choice for your application.
With features such as minimal
power conversion efficiency
loss, low output ripple noise
and focus on low power consumption, RECOM puts itself at
the very front of the field when
addressing current needs and
demands of its target audience. When choosing a RECOM
LED Driver or Power Converter,
there is also the obvious advantage of reducing development time and cost, as well as
eliminating the process of obtaining necessary product certifications, all of which are often
overlooked aspects. Keeping
this in mind, let us move on to
recent RECOM product news.

Contrast enhancement
Futaba has addressed the ongoing problem of VFD filter supply,
by a new cooperation with filter
supplier Rosco.
Rosco offers with the product
portfolio, E-Colour a large variety of cost-efficient contrast &
colour filters suitable for VFD.
Also E-Colour demo filter sets
are available for customer evaluation.
Generally we re-emphasize,
that for VFD displays a ND contrast or colour filter is mandatory to improve contrast & visibility.
TW002GINK
256x64 Pixel

The existing features of the
standard R-78 series (high efficiency, small case size and
pin-compatibility with 78-series
linear regulators) have been
improved by adding a much
higher input voltage range of up
to 42VDC and double the output
power in the same size case.
The R-78C series offers 15W/
cm³ of power.
Not only does the R-78C have
consistent efficiency, it has also
low output ripple (20-40mVpp) and can meet Class B EMC
with a simple low pass filter.
The standard output voltage options are 1.8V, 3.3V, 5V, 9V, 12C
and 15V all with 1A continuous
output current and 3A peak current.
The output is overload and short
circuit protected. The ambient
operating temperature covers the full industrial range
of -40°C to +85°C and the high
conversion efficiency makes
heat-sinking unnecessary. The
converter is EN60950 certified,
RoHS 6/6 conform and comes
with RECOM’s standard 3 year
warranty. The MTBF is specified by MIL-HDBK 217F at +25°C
with 8.6 million hours.

Solutions
Even simple modules can provide
a complete solution
By Erik Sandholm, es@m-comp.dk
M-COMP supply a wide variety of
special items to our customer’s
products and projects, ranging
from special cables to more complex circuit boards. We do this to
make it easier for our customers
to focus on the process of bringing a solution fast to the end-customer. As we all know, missing
one small item being a part of a
total solution can stop the whole
supply process. Our goal and ability is to assist our customers as
much as possible bringing their
products to market. In a certain
project it involved a small, low
complexity design in order for the
customer to be able to make a
monitor product with special approvals for harsh environments.
Based on
the customers requirements
M-COMP takes care
of the production and logistics involved in supplying an
inter-connection PCB. This interconnection PCB was needed to
make an easier connection to the
various other modules inside the
monitor ( AD
board, OSD
panel, USB port
etc.) For the same
customer M-Comp also supply a
custom designed OSD board with
built-in waterproof buzzer.
