Environmental improvement, energy use, and resource recycling achieved all at once Cutting-edge Eco Report Here is a firsthand account of the projects being carried out by “Kawasaki, a Cutting-edge Environmental City” that are gaining attention from both in and outside of Japan. Advanced treatment facility undergoes renewal and realizes “visualization” Energy creation facilities Industrial tourist attractions Ozenji Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Center This wastewater treatment plant, the oldest in Kanagawa Prefecture, supports the lives of some 320,000 people in all of Kawasaki Ward and parts of Saiwai Ward and Nakahara Ward. Transformed into an advanced treatment facility in 2011, its environmental measures are focused on three priorities: “environmental improvement”; “energy use”; and “resource recycling.” Heat from the incinerator is used to generate electricity Completed in March 2012, the Ozenji Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Center is the main waste treatment facility in the northern part of Kawasaki city. The Center can incinerate and treat a maximum of 450t of household garbage in one day, which is equivalent to waste collected by 225 garbage trucks. Not only this, the Center has made possible the effective use of energy by utilizing the steam from the heat of the incinerator to generate 7,500 kW of electricity at full capacity. In addition to using the generated electricity within the facility, surplus electricity is transmitted to an electric power company. A large pipe as wide as a human torso, through which wastewater flows from homes. The photo is of Mr. Hattori, the water quality manager, who provided a guided tour of the facility. At the hands-on learning spaces, videos and models are used to explain cutting-edge technologies in an easy-to-understand format. At the central control room, the situation inside the incinerator, etc. is monitored in real time. Ozenji Municipal Solid Waste Disposal Center is an environmentally-friendly waste treatment facility. Cutting-edge technologies that visitors can learn by “seeing, hearing, and touching” Heat from garbage incineration is also used effectively! Exterior of Kawasaki Eco Gurashi Mirai-kan The facility is managed around the clock at the central control room The steam is also used for the heated pool at the adjacently located Yonetti Ozenji, etc. 6 Kawasaki’s cutting-edge renewable energy technologies. Visitors have a chance to get an up close look at actual products. On the way to the front desk of the facility, visitors will pass a 100 m high smokestack that rises high into the sky. Visitors are able to receive a guided tour offered by a staff member, as well as observe the waste treatment in action through a glass window. In order to pass a standard that is more rigorous than average, the incinerator incinerates garbage at a high temperature of more than 900°C while minimizing the release of toxic substances. Gas emissions are treated at a specialized emission treatment facility, and thorough measures are taken to control odor and sound. So that everyone can be reassured, the facility is managed around the clock at the central control room. In the future, a recycling treatment facility, a plaza building, and a health and community space will be constructed. The next-generation comprehensive waste treatment facility is scheduled to be completed in FY2015. For the address and contact information, see p.15 At this facility that has achieved “visualization,” visitors are able to see the process in which wastewater is treated and purified. This advanced treatment process has contributed to improving the water quality in Tokyo Bay. Compared to the conventional water treatment method, the advanced process has improved the removal of the causes of red tide: “nitrogen” and “phosphorous.” Furthermore, a small hydroelectric power generation system has been introduced, which utilizes the drop height of the treated water to generate 100,000 kWh of power annually (after the entire facility is completed) for consumption by the facility. The amount of CO2 reduced is equivalent to the amount absorbed by approximately 2,300 planted cedar trees in one year. At observation points and hands-on learning spaces, descriptions and audio guides are available in multiple languages, facilitating visitors’ understanding of cutting-edge environmental wastewater treatment technologies. For the address and contact information, see p.9 . Learning about future technologies through a game-like experience Tours are available to see the adjacent Ukishima Solar Power Plant from the rooftop of the recycling treatment facility. At the recycling treatment facility, visitors can observe the intermediate process of disposing mixed paper and plastic containers and packaging collected from homes in Kawasaki city, and deepen their understanding of recycling. Eco Gurashi Mirai-kan, founded on the concept of “learning by seeing, hearing, and touching,” provides opportunities to see and learn while having fun through a game-like experience, making the facility a perfect place for learning. The exhibition room is divided into the Global Warming Challenge Zone, Renewable Energy Zone, and Resource Recycling Challenge Zone. Visitors are able to see up close cutting-edge environmental technologies founded in the Kawasaki coastal area, including actual solar power panels and a portion of the wind turbine of Ogishima Wind Power Plant. Visitors both from within Japan and overseas via Haneda Airport . Kawasaki Eco Gurashi Mirai-kan is a hands-on facility where visitors can learn about the environment, with focus given to renewable energies, including solar power generation, and recycling of resources, such as waste. Since opening in August 2011, the facility has been visited by more than 25,000 people, from children to adults (as of the end of September 2012). Featuring convenient Access: From JR Kawasaki Station, take the Kawasaki City Bus 03 Waterfront District going to “Ukishima access from Haneda Airport, Bus Terminal,” and get off at the last stop, “Ukishima many people visit the facility Bus Terminal” (Approx. 40 min) from both Japan and overseas. * Approx. 10-min walk from “Ukishima Bus Terminal” Capable of producing enough electricity to power approx. 2,100 homes annually! It disseminates information to the public on the expansion of new energy aiming to prevent global warming. Based in Kawasaki city, the Association carries out a wide range of activities, including seminars and events. It ran a booth at the Kawasaki Environmental Show Window Fair held in July 2012. The solar power demo using an actual solar panel was very popular with children, amazed to discover that solar power was capable of generating electricity. Chairman Suzuki of KNEPA began to focus on solar power two decades ago. Seeing eco-friendly solar panels which do not release CO2, he said the idea of being able to produce electricity anywhere, so long as the sun was shining, excited him.
