The point of the discussion is to encourage team members to think creatively and collaborate.
This challenge involves a real hands-on project working
in teams, where each team competes with the others to
specifically show the advantages and disadvantages of
teams. But also, the way you work while performing the
exercise can reveal a lot about your personality and how
you tackle challenges in the workplace and life. There
will be prizes give to the top teams.

President’s Message
APICS 2013 / 2014…..
While I am writing write this message, I am in attendance at the APICS
2013 conference. In general, 2013 was a planning and positioning year for
APICS. 2014 will see an execution of those strategies. Beginning October
1, 2013, APICS will be launching a new brand and logo. The previous
brand “APICS The Association for Operations Management” will now just
be “APICS”. The Cleveland chapter will begin implementing the new logo
over the next few months. While the new logo is important I believe what
is really important is the new strategy and direction for APICS.
Supply chain management is a dynamic field and constantly changing.
APICS has partnered with Michigan State University to conduct academic
and professional research. In addition, the board composition has been changed to set the organization on a future path of growth. APICS will focus on increasing membership and expanding knowledge of the brand.
While APICS certification is widely known in production, operations and supply chain management circles, the
brand is weak outside of these areas. Social networking and mobile applications will be some of the new tools
that APICS will use to market the brand.
APICS is positioning itself for the future. Over the past 25 years, strategic planning, communications, and leadership have become integral requirements for effective supply chain management. The question now concerns
how these requirements have evolved in a world where supply chain strategy must consider multiple channels
and business models. APICS will study this shift and share recognized competencies considered essential for
chain success. APICS has embarked on a new project looking at what’s likely to shape the future.
Board Positions
APICS has a few positions open on the Board. Please consider being a volunteer on the Board to network with
other professionals, improve your skills which will enhance your career, and to continuously learn and have fun
while doing so. If you have any interest in joining the team, please contact me. Research (Tom Rath bestselling author & Gallup senior scientist) has shown that those who volunteer are more engaged in their jobs,
are more satisfied and happier with their life in general.

ANNOUNCEMENTS / SPECIAL NOTES TO CHAPTER:

November PDM: Wednesday 11/13/13 at the City Club - Dr. Joe Muscatello, Kent State
University.

No PDM in December due to holidays.

January PDM moved to 3rd Wednesday (1/15/14) of the month due to the way the dates
fall and the second Wednesday being too close to holidays.

Fall classes have been cancelled due to low attendance and will be rescheduled after
January 1st, 2014.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Board of Directors and all of the Cleveland Chapter for retaining
PLATNUM STATUS. This is an awesome accomplishment and distinguishes the Cleveland
Chapter as one of the elite chapter in the nation.

Cleveland Chapter to donate $500 scholarships to CWRU, CSU, and AU for Mid Atlantic Student Case Competition (more to come on this subject).

Covered access to the building is available via a walk-way bridge on the
4th level of the garage. Once in the building, take elevator to 2nd floor for
dinner and meeting. Please bring your parking ticket to the PDM for
validation.
From the West Take I-90 east to E. 9th Street exit, E. 9th Street North
to Prospect, left on Prospect. AMPCO Parking is on the right about 1/2
block.

Train-The-Trainer Workshop (TTT) - Columbus, Ohio
October 25-26, 2013 (Fri/Sat)
Note: TTT is being held in conjunction with the Mid-Atlantic District Meeting.
This Train the Trainer Workshop is designed to provide attendees with skills, techniques and workable methodologies to successfully deliver adult training in any subject.
Objectives:
During this interactive workshop, you will write instructional objectives, formulate lesson plans, and personally present two
training sessions. One session will be 5 minutes in length and the second will be 10 minutes. During these sessions the
attendee will use the procedures, tools, and techniques learned in this workshop. Both sessions will be recorded and critiqued specifically for you. Most find this real-time-learning process to be so effective that they can put their new skills to
use immediately upon completion.
This class is designed to improve the delivery of your future training sessions allowing you to instruct in a confident, more
results-oriented manner. This material understands various student learning preferences and prepares you to address the
unique needs of today’s learner.
Who Should Attend: People who instruct or want to instruct adults.


Class Activities:
During the first part of the class, we will meet each other, learn the specifics of the course, its purpose, the basics of successful instruction and the overall objectives we plan to achieve.
During the remainder of the two days, we will cover the following topics: the training process, learning objectives, lesson
plans, the components of communication and motivation, training evaluation, media selection, and challenges. These sessions will include your active participation in training demonstrations, some of which will be recorded and replayed for critique by your peers and the workshop instructors. This interactive workshop facilitates learning by doing.
At the conclusion of this workshop, the participants will understand how to:








Use visual aids
Motivate learners
Effectively use media
Lay out a training room
Write learner-centered instructional objectives
Deliver training that meets learning objectives
Effectively prepare and deliver a training session
Prepare visuals that are clear, effective and related to the topic

Somers is principal of Saw-Whet Solutions, a training and consulting firm specializing in progressive supply chain and operations management
strategies, including systems implementation, Just-in-Time, lean, total quality management, and sales and operations planning, with a focus
on managing change. She has more than 24 years of comprehensive training and practical experience. Somers is recognized by APICS as a
master instructor for instructor development programs and review courses for both the APICS Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) exams.
Somers currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Supply Chain Sector Council (CSCSC) and is a former director of the
APICS Canadian District. She has served as a member of the APICS Finance Committee, the Chair of Governance Committee, and the
APICS Board of Directors.
