october 2010 issue 10 From Block Party to Halloween Party H.O.G. Members Know How to Have Fun Road rave Director’s Cut By the time you are reading this, it will be RALLY week here in Spartanburg and the excitement is in the air! If you have not signed up to volunteer, please be sure to get with Keith Sandra Mattson and volunteer your time. I Director believe it will be a great rally and everyone will have a good time! Even if you can only donate one hour of your time - it will be an additional hour that we can count and try to win the Chapter challenge. Come on guys - lets bring that trophy home where it belongs! Don’t forget to check your calendar for other October events. This month is fun filled and full of activities from the Rally, to dinner rides, to day rides and even a party to end the month! Ladies of Harley is sponsoring the Halloween Party and I am sure they would love any help or decorations that you might have to offer. Hot Rods and Harleys will be on the Saturday during Rally Week and we will need volunteers to help cook and serve food, sell 50/50 tickets and so forth, please sign up if you can help a little on that date also! If anyone is interested in an officer position next year, please see myself or Gary and let us know what you are interested in. The next installment in our group riding series… Riding with a group is a lot of fun. Heck, that’s why most of us are members of HOG. We enjoy the opportunity to ride with other Gary Vanover folks, and the fellowship group Assistant Director riding provides. Following just a few simple rules while riding in a group can make the experience even more fun (and safer). So this topic applies directly to ride leaders, but also to each member of the group ride… One of the scariest things I’ve encountered while on group rides is getting “stranded” out in the middle of a busy street/highway, while the group is exiting the road. It might be at fuel stop, or a food stop, or a rest stop, or whatever. The group leader (or someone else following along) exits the road and immediately slows to a near stop at or near the property entrance looking for a good place to park, leaving the back half of the group sitting out in the middle of a busy road waiting for the guys in front to get out of the way so they can get out of the road. If you’ve been on many group rides, it’s probably happened to you once or twice, and you know how uncomfortable it can be. The folks up front should always be aware of the folks behind them. This is especially true in a highway exit situation. When the lead riders exit the road, they should have as their first priority to get everyone else behind them out of the road, ASAP. Typically the best thing to do after exiting is to simply circle the parking lot/building or proceed to the farthest point available on the property, etc. before attempting to park, thus making room for everyone else to get out of the road. Ride Safe and Enjoy the Rally! Sandra fork in the road Octobers big event is your SC state rally. As everyone know Keith has been working hard to make it a success. There are lots of events and activities. There are lots of Saturday and Sunday rides coming up. Check the web site for more info. A simple thing, but it can make a huge difference in safety while out on the road. Wishing you fun & Safe riding! Gary Vanover Road Captain Brian Arcaro Activities Director The heat is finally getting better! Fall is in the air and bikes are every where! Please take the time to check your bike to make sure it is ready for the road. A few minutes can save a lot of trouble later on. Let’s ride and enjoy our H.O.G. friendships. There are day rides scheduled and we would like to see some new faces in the group. If you have not ridden in a group before, don’t be shy! There are seasoned riders to show you the way. Come on and join the fun, you know we love to eat, ride and have fun! Piedmont Bloodmobile will be at the 2010 SC State H.O.G. Rally, Sat, Oct. 9th from 1:00 until 3:00. Please be sure to donate. You could save a life ! If you have a time that you’d like to schedule, please let Linda Poag know. 864-439-3730 2 up to the minute • 7:00 pm – Sandra Mattson, Director, called the meeting to order. • Chapter Chaplain James Price led in Prayer. ABC’s of Touring I hope you were able to join us on September 25th for our final organized ABC ride. That planned ride was designed to obtain at least 12 points in this contest. But even if you missed all of the organized rides, you can still win this contest through your on individual efforts. Some lucky local HOG member is going to win a $100 gift certificate from our local dealership. Wow, how can you beat that? You get the pleasure and enjoyment of riding around the countryside on your Harley, taking pictures of you and your bike while on your trip and then, in the end, you actually have the opportunity to get PAID for the fun that you’ve had? Man, that just sounds like a dream come true. Well sure enough, that dream is going to come true for you or one of your fellow HOG Chapter members. If you are real industrious, you can get out there even now and rack up a bunch of points in this contest. But you’ve only got until the end of this month, because all entries for the local contest must be submitted no later than the business meeting in November. You need to have all of your pictures and your form completed, just like the instructions state for the national competition. Please remember to put your application and pictures in an envelope so that nothing gets lost. Also include your name on the outside of the envelope. I will go through each application and make sure that each picture and entry will qualify. Then I will create a list of the competitors in the order of points scored. The entry with the most points will be the winner and that winner will be announced at the December HOG Christmas Party. I will return your envelope with all pictures and the entry form so that you can mail the form to the national organization and receive your national reward for your efforts. Good luck to all of you. 2nd 2nd 3rd 3rd 4th 4th 7th 11th 12th 18th 27th If your birthday was not on the list, we will be glad to add it. Email Nancy @ sblfb@windstream.net with the Month & Date. NOT MY LUCKY DAY!!! There I was is sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up next to me, grabs my drink and gulps it down in one swig. “Well, whatcha gonna do about it?” he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears. “Come on, man,” the biker says, “I didn’t think you’d CRY. I can`t stand to see a man crying.” “This is the worst day of my life,” I say. “I’m a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me. When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don’t have any insurance. I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my old lady in bed with the gardener and then my dog bit me.” “So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink, I drop a capsule in and sit here watching the poison dissolve; then you, you jack-ass, show up and drink the whole thing! But enough about me how’s your day going?” 57 time capsule Well I have decided to change things this time...I feel like everyone is getting kind of bored with how Harley-Davidson got into racing........ I was on facebook a week or so back and came across this, so I wanted to share it with everyone...now there are a few curse words I have changed so no one would be offended....so here we go.... ”THE BIKERS CODE” -AUTHOR UNKNOWN- Gene Epley IT used to be that all bikers shared a common bond, an unspoken code of ethics and behavior that Historian transcended words and was built on actions. There was never a bible written on this Biker’s Code and there was no need for such. But the times are changin’ and there seems to be a lot of new riders out there. These days the riders you see blastin’ down the road are just as likely to be clad in shorts and sneakers as jeans and engineer boots. And the roughest, toughest-looking biker you pull up next to could be your doctor or lawyer and may be wearin’ a Rolex watch under his leathers. There’s nothing wrong with that, so long as these new riders learn the Code just as we old timers did. Being a biker used to be about using your creativity to take a basket case old hawg and only using grit and ingenuity, turning it into a one of a kind eye dazzler, then risking your life on the asphalt on a bike you made yourself out of pride. Bikers wore leather and grease because they knew cagers would just as soon run them down as to look at them, so they had to be intimidating. We were a breed unto ourselves with no union, no support group, and in many cases no family (they threw us out) We had to make it in the world our own, against all rules, against mainstream society, and against all odds. We survived and prospered because of the Biker Code and we never took crap from anybody. As an old scooter bro once said, “It’s every tramp’s job to school the young. How else are they gonna know a Panhead from a bed pan?” With that in mind, we bring you a primer on the basic two-wheeled Code. Take heed brothers and sisters, for our Code is a hallowed one filled with honor and loyalty, the likes of which have not been since the days of knighthood: Don’t take any crap. Be kind to women, children and animals, but don’t take any bull crap. This is an essential part of being a biker. It has to do with respect and honor. Anyone can be a quick-tempered fool. Be cool, stand tall and back up what you say with action. Never lie, cheat or steal. Another way of saying this is to always tell the truth. Bikers know that his word is his bond. Your word is all you have in life that is truly yours. Guard it carefully and be something noble, for you are a true knight of the road. Don’t snitch. If you see a wrong, fight it yourself, if you are about anything you’ll take care of problems yourself and never feel the need to snitch someone off. Snitches are the lowest life forms on earth, right up there with biker thieves. Don’t whine. Absolutely no one likes or respects a whiner. Another way to say this is hold your mud. Still another way to think of it is “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” Most of life’s little inconveniences work themselves out whether you whine or not. Keep your chin up, durn it.!! Your a biker, not some lowly snail. Never say die and never give up. Whether it’s in a fight, a debate, or a business deal, no matter how bad it get’s, a biker never gives up. Help others. When a brother or sister is broken down by the side of the road, always stop and help them. Even moral support, if that is all you can give, is better than riding on by. Remember life is about the journey, the ride, not getting there. You already are there. And don’t just help bikers, show the world that we are better than our image portrays us. Courtesy costs you nothing and gives you everything. Stick to your guns. Do what you say you’ll do, be there when you say you will. This is called integrity. This also goes back to standing for something. Like the song says, “You’ve got to stand for something or you’ll fall for anything.” Life is not a drill. Yeah, this ain’t no dress rehearsal. This is life--go out and take big bites of it. You’ve got no time to lose and bikers don’t stand around waiting for the party to come to them. You only go around once. Tomorrow you could be road kill, thanks to a chain smoker asleep at the wheel of his caddy. Live life now, make the most of each moment. All right, now let’s review. You are a biker, a modern-day knight of the road. Protect the weak, walk tall and stand proud. Your word is your bond. Stick to your guns. Don’t take any crap. Life is not a drill. Now go forth and ride. When in doubt, ride. THAT’S WHAT WE DO....RIDE. If you want to ride around in a dayglo Hawaiian shirt and sandals, go for it, but if you intend to look like a idiot, at least don’t act like a idiot. These commandments are just a few of the broad strokes, there is a lot more to being a biker than buying a bike. If you just buy a bike, you are a motorcyclist. Being a biker is a way of life, a proud way of life we hold in high regard with a burning passion for the open highway....... A BIKER COMES FROM THE HEART, YOUR BORN WITH IT, LIVE FOR IT, AND RIDE FOR IT Well the State hog Rally starts this week, hope to see all of you there, because this is OUR rally... Well, keep the rubber side down, and the wind in your hair, BE SAFE...GENE 6 October 2010 october Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri 1 Sat 2 Daniel Boone Inn Ride 3 4 Day Ride 10 11 5 Business Meeting Fuddruckers 7pm 12 6 7 8 State Rally 13 14 State Rally 15 9 State Rally 16 Day Ride 17 18 19 20 21 22 Easy Rider Bike Show Day Ride 24 31 23 25 26 27 28 29 notes Visit our website at www.spartanburghog.net 8 30 Halloween Party Day Ride 31 9 shop talk Sponsoring dealership Everyone at Spartanburg H-D wants to thank everyone that helped during the Dixie Classic Poker Run and the 2011 Open House. Also, don’t forget that the Hot Rods and Harleys will be on the 9th. Spartanburg HOG will be selling food, so you’ll know where to eat.
