Conference Venue and Accommodation
The OIPEEC conference will be held in the Intercontinental Sandton Sun and Towers, in the
Sandton area of Johannesburg. The Sandton area is known as the business and economic
capital of South Africa and hosts the new Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
The hotel is connected to the largest convention centre in the country and also has direct
access to an extensive shopping and entertainment complex, Sandton City. Mandela square
is also nearby. The venue is easily accessible from Johannesburg (Oliver Tambo)
international airport.
The conference venue, Intercontinental Sandton Sun and Towers can provide
accommodation for attendees. A limited number of rooms have been reserved for the
conference and will be available on a first come first served basis until 14th June 2007, please
book through Melanie Williams (contact details below).

Technical Visit
Moab Khotsong is an AngloGold Ashanti mine employing the deepest single lift man/material
hoisting system in the world. Its hoist is an electrically coupled Blair multi rope winder, drum
diameter 5.7 m, running 2×42 mm ropes per drum. The winder operates at speeds of 19 m/s
to a depth of 3,180 m, with payload of 165 men or 12,000 kg of material. The motors are rated
at 7,400 kW (RMS), 16,800 kW (peak).
Partner’s Programme
Day 1: visit to SOWETO, followed by lunch at a local tavern before returning during the
afternoon to Johannesburg for free time before OIPEEC Conference Banquet.
Day 2: All day tour to Cullinan Diamond mine and Pretoria City.
