with a trained health care professional with regard to treatment options for health problems. If
you discover adverse or allergic reactions to any of our products, discontinue use immediately.
Our herbs come to us from:

BULK HERBS
Our bulk herbs are ethically wildcrafted and locally grown without the use of chemicals. They are the same
herbs that Yard Woman uses in making Tinctures (nutrition Supplements), Infused Oils, Salves and Ointments, and
Tisanes (Herbal Teas).
Use and Care
The effective shelf life of dried botanicals is 6 to 9 months. After that, the properties (actions) of the botanicals begin to wear and they become less-and-less effective. This assumes they are kept in dark bottles or bags, tightly
sealed in a stable environment.

ESSENTIAL OILS
Aromatic plants and oils have been used for thousands of years as incense, perfume and cosmetics and for
their therapeutic and culinary applications. ESSENTIAL OILS are steam distilled directly from the plant volatile
oils. They do not contain added water, alcohol, oil or other solvents. Oils containing solvents are called ABSOLUTES and are used primarily in perfumery.
We purchase therapeutic grade ESSENTIAL OILS from reputable suppliers that we know and trust and have
established a working relationship with. They are suitable for aromatherapy, cosmetic, cooking and body applications.
Use and Care
Keep ESSENTIAL out of the reach of children and away from light and heat. Use only by the drop or dilute
in pure distilled water or a carrier oil (sweet almond oil, Grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, etc.).
Learn about an ESSENTIAL OIL before you use it. Before applying an essential oil undiluted on your skin,
put a drop on your inner wrist and cover. If irritation appears, do not use.
Before using ESSENTIAL OILS internally, it is best to consult with a licensed health care practitioner. It is
also recommended that you review literature on the subject of essential oils and their use with emphasis on the
particular oil or oils you are interested in.

SOAPS
Our soaps are handcrafted by soap makers who add natural organic Olive Oil, Jojoba Oil, Shea Butter and
sometimes Goat’s Milk to wildcrafted herbs, naturally grown herbs and therapeutic essential oils to make long lasting soaps that are rich in lather and fragrance; gentle to your skin; and restful to your spirit.
Allergic reactions to pure natural ingredients are uncommon. In the unlikely event, that any redness or irritation develops after using our soap, please discontinue use immediately.
Our stock changes on a regular basis, though we generally have the items on the following page in stock. If you
have a favorite herb or essential oil that you would like your soap to be made of, we are happy to take special orders. Please note that special orders may take up to 60 days to get to you as the soap needs to “cure” for 45 to 60
days after it is made. This hardening insures rich creamy lather and long lasting fragrance.
Use and Care
Soaps should be stored in a dark, dry relatively cool environment such as a linen closet or lingerie drawer.

ABOUT TEAS
Whether the tea is black, green, white or red, it comes from the leaves and buds of the same plant, Camellia
sinensis. ‘Teas’ made from botanicals (herbs and other plant plant materials are (technically) tisanes. Yard Woman
has a wide selection of both Teas and Tisanes which we have listed below, but first we thought we should talk a little
about some of the qualities of the Teas and the Tisanes.
Camellia sinensis (the tea bush) is a perennial evergreen with tender young leaves and downy buds. The individual
character of each tea is a result of the region it is grown in, the part of the plant used, the processing methods and
whether the teas has been rolled or scented with ‘flavor enhancers’ such as jasmine blossoms.
Types of Tea
Black Teas are fully oxidized (fermented). They are the classic, hearty teas that do best with short steeps. They are
great iced. Try them without milk and sugar GONGFU STYLE. Keemum Qihong is the ‘champion’ of black teas
and Lapsong Souchong has a classic pine smoke flavor.
Oolong Teas take their place between Black Teas and Green Teas. They are semi fermented, sweet and flowery due
to the leaf oxidation during the drying process. They stimulate the metabolic system and should be a part of a balanced weight management program. Fenghuang is a great morning tea. The leaves turn green when steeped.
Baozhong Teas are between the Green Teas and the Oolong Teas. They go through a special slow-fired drying
process which allows the tea leaves to slightly oxidize while drying. They are healthy like the Green Teas and have
the flavor of the Oolong Teas.
19
Green Teas are light and refreshing. The process of oxidation is stopped soon after picking by pan frying or steaming the leaves to promote retention of color and nutrients, especially antioxidants. They are therefore especially
supportive of the immune system. Try the 3 Links Blooming Teas. Serve in a clear glass and watch the Amaranth
Flower bloom. The Jasmine Pearls are sweet and fruity and also change their form in water. Gunpowder is a rich
and hearty form of Green Tea, and Sencha is your every day good tasting cup of green!
White Teas are a sub group of Green Teas and are high in antioxidants. White Teas are not fermented. The leaves
are steamed shortly after picking to preserve the high antioxidant content. White tea has a high caffeine level.
Whether you use the tea bag to brew a quick cup or take the time to watch the hand rolled Snow White Pearls
Flower in your tea glass, White Teas will provide you with flavor and nourishment, especially for your immune system.
Pu-erh Tea is known in China as medicinal tea. It has an earthy taste and a reddish color and less caffeine than
coffee. The leaves are oxidized similar to but not as long as black tea. The leaves are then dried loose or compressed into tea bricks and some, like the Toucha variety, are formed to look like a Bird next. Pu-erh Tea is recommended as part of a balanced weight loss plan. Enjoy the tea bag form if you are on the go or take the time to
watch the Bird’s Net open up.
Herbal Teas as mentioned, are technically called Tisanes because they are ‘teas’ made from Herbs and other botanicals and not from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis bush. Since all botanicals have ‘actions’ associated with
them, that is phytonutrients that they supply, traditionally, Tisanes have been used for their remedy properties as
well as for their flavor. Herbal Teas are caffeine free and are soothing and nourishing to the body.

(Herbal Extracts)

TINCTURES
Tinctures (also called Extracts or Nutrition Supplements) are botanicals (herbs and other plant materials)
concentrated in alcohol (or vegetable glycerine) to extract the phytochemicals. Our Tinctures are made by slowly
extracting botanicals in 40% grape alcohol for at least a 90 day period. This provides for a better tasting extract
without sacrificing quality or potency.
The advantage to using Tinctures over other forms of ingestion is that you get the full range of needed constituents from the botanical(s) when you use a Tincture. For example, the Herb Osha contains important ingredients that are not soluble in water. So when you use Osha as a tea, you miss out on important ingredients because
they do not dissolve in water. When a Tincture is made, the extraction process does not use heat, therefore heat
sensitive essential oils are preserved in the Tincture.
Tinctures are convenient. The dropper bottles allow you to carry the tincture conveniently. You can take botanicals in Tincture form easily anywhere at any time. Capsule form is also convenient but the essential ingredients
are neither as readily available as those in Tinctures nor are they assimilated into the body as easily. Capsules disintegrate and then are digested in the stomach and absorbed into the system. Tinctures begin to be absorbed immediately upon entering the mouth. The alcohol aids the absorption of the herb into your system; however, you can
evaporate it by putting the tincture in hot water (tea) if desired.
25
Use and Care

Tinctures should be stored in a cool, dark place. Stored properly, they can last 5 to 7 years. When using a
tincture for the first time, try a few drops to see whether you are allergic to it. Increase the dosage to your
needs. Most herbalists believe that tinctures are best used over time in small doses.

Children are given l/3 to l/2 the adult dosage depending on the weight of the child. It is recommended that a
child (under 18), use a Tincture in a vegetable glycerin base.

Our Tinctures are nutrition specific products. They are not sold as drugs or remedies. We make no medical
claims and assume no responsibility for any misuse or abuse of our product.

Use caution when combining botanicals with pharmaceutical medicines.

Understand what the herb will do for you before you take it. Always tell your Health Care Practitioner what
botanicals and supplements you are taking.
