“How to Hang Your Shingle and Start Your Own Firm” CLE Seminar

The Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers Project presents:
“How to Hang Your Shingle and Start
Your Own Firm” CLE Seminar
Friday, May 23, 2014
Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum
1152 Lakeland Drive - Jackson, Mississippi
6 Hours CLE Credit
About the Seminar
The current legal market has forced many attorneys to start solo or small firm practices even if
they had not originally planned to do so when they entered law school. Starting your own firm can
be overwhelming, especially if you do not know other attorneys who have successfully done so.
On Friday, May 23, 2014 and Friday, October 10, 2014, the Mississippi Volunteer Lawyers
Project (MVLP) will hold all-day CLE programs specifically for attorneys who want to establish solo
or small firm practices. The CLEs are designed to make sure you have the right “tools in your
toolbox” as you hang your shingle and start your own firm. MVLP is offering these CLEs as a way
to support the many Mississippi attorneys who provide pro bono legal services to the organization.
Topics to be covered include choosing clients wisely, best practices for getting paid, malpractice
liability basics, financial and tax liability basics, ethical considerations of solo and small firm practices, an introduction to chancery, criminal defense and appellate practice, and electronic filing
through Mississippi Electronic Courts (MEC), among others.
