Public Policy Information Enhanced care and raised awareness by building our network of advocates who respond to Public Policy alerts. Chapter advocates now total: 2,359 Communicated to Congress the urgent need for increased federal funding for Alzheimer’s research. Board of Directors Sent a delegation of volunteers to Washington, D.C. to urge members of Congress to support Alzheimer’s research, quality care issues, and to preserve and improve Medicare and Medicaid programs. Chair R. Thomas Bodkin Worked with state officials, service providers, caregivers and community networks to develop a state plan in Kentucky for government to meet the needs of the current and projected population with Alzheimer’s disease, with components addressing dementia-capable programs, availability of services, and quality care. Made our voices heard in our state capitols on issues of Medicaid, safety, and home and community services for persons with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Programs & Education Information Provided Helpline support through information, referrals, lending library, care consultation and emotional support to 2301 persons with dementia, family caregivers, professionals and community members. Provided 131 education programs for professionals, family caregivers and the community with a total attendance of 3173. Sponsored an annual conference, Make a Difference: New Ideas to Enhance the Lives of Persons with Dementia for 126 professionals from Kentucky and Indiana. Co-sponsored a special conference, Branch Out Kentucky – Uniting to Identify and Care for African Americans with Alzheimer’s Disease, with 131 people in attendance. 70 support groups in 41 counties across Kentucky and southern Indiana provided support and care to 3,033 family caregivers and friends of persons with dementia. 2007AnnualReport.indd 1 From Champions for the Cause – Harry Johns, Alzheimer’s Association President and CEO Vice Chair Susan Pope Secretary Scott Pitts Treasurer Scott Olinger, CPA, CIPM Directors Linda Blair David Casey, M.D. Janet Cerel Helen Kientz Robert L. Smallwood Laura Wigglesworth Become A Champion More than five million Americans are currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, and someone new is added to those ranks every 71 seconds. The Alzheimer’s Association has been moving the cause forward for 27 years. We’ve been the leader in Alzheimer care and support since those origins and have played a significant leadership role in fostering research in understanding the disease, its potential treatments and cure. In 2007, we moved the cause by building public awareness and knowledge, encouraging a national voice for those with the disease and focusing our mission on reaching more people who need our support and accelerating progress to end the disease. The Alzheimer’s Association is challenging more than five million Americans - one for every person living with the disease - to become a Champion, learn about the disease and join the fight against Alzheimer’s. Indeed, we believe that the ultimate path of Alzheimer’s is that of a controllable disease. Better diagnostic tools to detect the disease at earlier stages — even before symptoms appear — and disease-modifying drugs are closer than ever before. Our staff worked closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to improve the drug approval process by including input from those living with dementia and their care partners. Also during the year, we advanced a pilot program to encourage greater participation in clinical research studies. What is an Alzheimer’s Champion? d A Champion is a celebrity or well- known figure. d A Champion is a respected sports figure or athlete. d A Champion is a business leader. d A Champion is a lawmaker. d A Champion is a Memory Walker. d A Champion is a grassroots activist. d A Champion is a scientist or researcher working toward a cure. d A Champion is YOU. While much work remains to slow or stop the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, the advancement of science increasingly gives us hope. Our organization has been part of nearly every major advance in Alzheimer research since our formation in 1982, and we have committed millions of dollars in grants to promising research projects. To foster the field of study, we host science conferences that are the primary knowledge-sharing forums for thousands of the world’s leading Alzheimer researchers. As significant as our organization’s achievements have been, we must still do more — as soon as possible. We are driven by the reality facing the more than 5 million people estimated to have Alzheimer’s today and the millions more who will face the disease tomorrow. Our progress energizes our staff, volunteers, donors and sponsors to move ever faster to achieve our vision: a world without Alzheimer’s. Annual Progress Report to Donors 2007 Isabel Yates The Alzheimer’s Association Greater Kentucky and Southern Indiana Chapter continues to fulfill the mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.
