Like so many other people, I was immediately drawn in by not only the children, but the teachers and staff who had such a commitment. I quickly understood why we are called Hope House as we provide so much Hope to the children and families. During this period, as Hope House has expanded and grown, that commitment and compassion have continued to be hallmarks of the organization under Betty’s leadership. And every year, there is always a group of children, always cute, and always eager to learn that never fail to leave an impression! Over the same period, there have been significant advances in the fight against HIV and AIDS, with hope for further advancements and a cure. Last year in Shelby County, there were no children born with the HIV… an incredible milestone. However, Memphis and Shelby County continue to have some of the highest rates of infection in the United States. This fact reminds us that although the number of children infected is decreasing, we continue to have many children impacted by HIV in our community. Hope House provides important educational services not only to these children but also their families through our social services. More importantly, we offer these children hope for a better future. This year through your generous support we are able to welcome 35 children and their families to Hope House, yet we have an even greater need. Thank you for your support. We hope that you can continue to support and reach out to others to tell them about the great things going on at Hope House. I would encourage everyone to visit, whether you have before or not. I promise you that you will have an incredible experience! With warm regards, Bryan Mulroy, Hope House Board President A Message from Dr. Betty Dear Friends, The letter from our Board President, Bryan Mulroy, beautifully states the Hope House experience. I just want to add that this is the only place dedicated to HIV-impacted children in Tennessee. It is here because you care. Thank you for your gifts that support our beautiful children and help the Mid-South community. With hope in our hearts, Elizabeth Montegut Dupont, Ed.D. Executive Director Page 2 Client Uses Hope House to Turn Tragedies Into Triumph If hope were a person, it would be Elgin. But before you can celebrate his accomplishments with him, you first have to put yourself in his shoes to truly appreciate how far he’s come. Nearly 25 years ago, Elgin was diagnosed with HIV, a devastating blow at a time when the disease was still considered to be a death sentence for many people. Ten years later, Elgin became blind through a work accident. He was left totally blind in his left eye and 95% blind in his right. Left with only the ability to see shadows, Elgin now needed the support of friends and family but suffered from a disease that people were afraid of contracting from him through a handshake. So what did Elgin do, he found a way to regain his sight. In 2010, Elgin was blessed to receive laser surgery to repair some of the damage done to his right eye, restoring his vision from 5% to 30% and giving him the ability to read with the help of adaptive aids. It was his ability to read that brought him to Hope House, and that is where his story takes an amazing turn. Elgin learned about Hope House from a flyer at another local nonprofit organization and decided to come and see what everything was all about. He attended support groups and built the confidence in himself that he needed to continue attacking his challenges head-on and not let his eyesight or his HIV status stand in the way of his success. Participating in the programs at Hope House was a driving force in convincing him to continue his education. In August 2012, Elgin received two diplomas from the Tennessee Rehabilitation Center through MTSU – one for successfully completing the program for vision impairment services and the other for finishing his GED, which he completed with almost perfect scores. Elgin now turns his attention toward a future for himself that’s not defined by his health, but one that’s mapped out by his own determination. Soon, Elgin will begin working in Memphis for the Clovernook Center, an organization producing biodegradable products for the military. When asked about the role that Hope House has played in his journey, Elgin says, “Hope House is like a beacon, like a light house for me. It guided me down the right paths. I knew I always had somewhere to come back to.” 2012 Annual Report One Mother’s Story of Hope When you think of Hope House, your first thought is about the beautiful children here. Their smiles, their laughter, their innocence – these are the reasons Hope House was started so many years ago. But Hope House is about more than just that. Every child at Hope House has a family that deserves the best care and support to live long, happy lives, and one mother’s recent story shows how hope and perseverance are still the cornerstones of our programs. When Marie was ready to enroll her daughter into preschool, she was terrified. Like many of us, she had heard the stories and seen the news reports of the things that can happen at preschools and day care centers, and she couldn’t imagine putting her daughter or herself in that situation. However, Marie’s daughter needed some language support, so she enrolled her in speech therapy. While in that program, Marie’s cousin recommended that she look into Hope House, a place where her daughter would be safe and well cared-for. Marie took the leap of faith and enrolled her daughter at Hope House. Like any mother, she had an adjustment period with her daughter in preschool every day, but the changes she saw were immediate and amazing. Her daughter started making huge strides with her speech, something she hadn’t seen yet with the speech therapy she was taking. On her first birthday at Hope House, she was shocked at how much love her daughter received from the staff and volunteers. They gave her gifts, a cake, and threw a birthday party for her during the day. It was like nothing she had ever seen. And that was just the beginning. During the holidays, Hope House volunteers adopted Marie’s family, and everyone in her house received gifts – something that wouldn’t have been possible because of the tough financial times they were experiencing. Marie had no words, only tears, to describe how blessed she felt to have Hope House in her life to help her family. The only way that Marie thought she could repay Hope House for what they had done for her family was to take advantage of the programs and classes that were offered so that she could start to work toward the goals she had set. She took the parenting class to learn about how to encourage her daughter’s development and appreciate her newfound self-expression. Marie enrolled in the “Getting Ahead” class to get a better understanding of her family’s economic status and make plans to get out of poverty. The next step was to make financial goals using the Financial Peace University class. All of this led to Marie graduating from cosmetology school this past summer and preparing herself to get the job she’s always wanted and support her family. “Hope House is a place that makes me feel safe,” Marie said, “Knowing that my daughter was safe during the day allowed me to concentrate on graduating – something I couldn’t have done otherwise.” Marie goes on to say Hope House has taught her that there are truly good people in the world, and that gives her the hope she needs to continue making life better for her family. Even though her daughter will graduate this spring, Marie isn’t going to let go of Hope House that easily. “Hope House is a part of my family now. I’m not ever losing touch!” Page 4 Buddy-Up Program continues to make a difference for Hope House children When you hear the word “buddy”, what immediately comes to mind? For most of us, “buddy” is just another word for a friend, something you may call someone you haven’t seen in a while. But did you know that “buddy” can mean something different altogether? At Hope House, it means mentor, role model, and good example. When Maria Randall started the Buddy-Up program, the idea was that pairing at-risk children with their adult buddy would give them the positive reinforcement that they deserved. The children would perform better in the classroom, have better self-confidence, and develop the understanding that they deserved to be loved like all children do. What has happened is more than anyone expected. Today, 6 of the 7 children in the preschool class have a buddy, and the program that started out as an opportunity for these children to have positive interactions with adults they’ve never met has turned into relationships that change both child and adult forever. For one hour each week, the adults come to Hope House to spend time on the playground, read books, share a Happy Meal, and maybe even spend some time on a tricycle (if they’re lucky!). While all the play time might seem simple enough, the effect that these Buddies have on the children at Hope House cannot really be put into words. At a time in their lives when the world can look pretty scary given the challenges these kids face, the Buddies offer a little time to escape, to enjoy what it means to be a child regardless of their health or economic status. The Buddy-Up program gives them a chance to interact with adults on their level – a luxury that children in poverty often miss out on. But Michael Goughnour, Ruby Ellison, Barbara Johnson, Bill Pettit, Amanda Clark, and Katelyn Harbison live up to the high standards that their buddies set for them each week. Their commitment to giving these children their time and attention is a great example of how the Memphis community continues to work to give our children the hope they deserve to live a happy and successful life. “The great thing about what these people are doing is that the kids can just be kids for a little while each week,” says Craig Locke, Director of Development. “There’s nothing more important than that.” Hope House wants to send a sincere “Thank You” to these special people for what they do each and every week for the children of Hope House! 2012 Annual Report 2012 Financial Information* All Donors 7/1/2011- 6/30/2012 Supporter Circle $1 - $99 Courtenay Adams Melanie Adams Donald & Carrie Akey Tara Alexander Lisa Allen Mr. & Mrs. Alex Alpe Louis Alpe Lon Alperin Justin Andrews Mrs. Darrin Anthony Shirley M.
