Our commitment to the residents of Beaver County began
with two fine gentlemen, Dr. H. W. Bernhardy and
Dr. D. W. Gressly. In 1955, Dr. Bernhardy led the Beaver
County Cancer Society, and Dr. Gressly led the Beaver
County Heart Association. After breaking the ties to the
national organizations, the two groups operated independently. It was in 1988 that the two separate entities
merged to become the Beaver County Cancer & Heart
Association. Dr. Bernhardy and Dr. Gressly were driven
with a sense of mission which is still our guiding force; to
serve the people of Beaver County. Dr. Bernhardy and
Dr. Gressly started many traditions and established many
principles which we still continue today. One tradition and
guiding principle that the Board of Directors will never
stray from is that all of the money raised by the Association will stay in Beaver County to serve the people of
Dr. D. W.

Our Mission Statement
Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association is committed to assisting Beaver County
residents in the prevention of cancer and/or cardiovascular diseases and to caring for
those afflicted with cancer and/or cardiovascular diseases, by sponsoring or providing
support services and education programs in Beaver County.
Our Logo
The outline of the physical shape of Beaver County is the basis of the logo of Beaver
County Cancer & Heart Association. The heart represents our heart disease awareness
programs. Surrounding the heart is a white ribbon which signifies our cancer programs.
We chose a white ribbon to represent purity with the hopes that in time there will be a
cure for cancer. Putting these three components together it symbolizes our dedication to
the residents of Beaver County since 1955.
Our Cancer Programs
Our cancer programs include:
* Educational materials to the public
* Breast Cancer Support Group meets on the
first Monday of the month from October
through June at the UPMC/Heritage Valley
Cancer Center.
* Breast cancer prevention and education
presentations and materials
* Skin cancer preventation and education
presentations and materials
* Colors of Cancer Awareness and Colors of
Cancer Awareness Bracelet
* The Ostomy Support Group of Beaver
County and Newsletter
Women’s Services
Bras/Breast Forms
Through an arrangement with Nearly Me, Beaver County
Cancer & Heart Association sells bras/breast forms. Bras
sell for $20 each and breast forms are $50 each. Bras are
available in both white and beige. We are proud of this
arrangement with Nearly Me, which makes it possible for
women to purchase these items right here in Beaver County.
Dignity Robes
In partnership with Amy Baughman Sewing Center in
New Brighton, we have made dignity robes. Our dignity
robes give women the dignity and grace they deserve while
undergoing radiation treatments. With the dignity robe,
only the area to be treated needs to be exposed. Dignity
robes are made with cotton fabric, secured with velcro and
are available in an assortment of prints. If you are undergoing treatment and are interested in receiving a dignity

Our Heart Programs
SCHOOL CHOLESTEROL SCREENING
For over 39 years, Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association has been
screening the cholesterol levels of 7th grade students. The program has
since expanded to include fasting glucose screenings, distribution of
nutritional information, a free tee shirt to each participant and a $50 Beaver
Valley Mall gift certificate to one boy and one girl from each school. Prior
to the screenings, students participate in a presentation in which they learn
what cholesterol is, where it comes from, the importance of knowing your
cholesterol numbers and what those numbers mean. Also included in this
presentation is a Fast Food Game in which the students are able to see
how much fat is in some of their favorite fast foods.

Currently, there are over 40 children in Beaver County with cancer and there
are over 200 children with serious heart disease.
The Angels R’ Us Fund is for Beaver County families with children, 18
years old and younger, who have been diagnosed with cancer and/or a life
threatening heart condition. Our goal is to help with the financial burden
directly related to the illness.
In 2008, Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association received a generous
gift from the the C.J. Betters Center Holiday Classic Foundation. With this
gift, the Board of Directors of Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association,
expanded the Angels R’ Us Fund and created the Roxsan’s Dream Fund.
Through the Roxsan’s Dream Fund, we were able to grant these five dreams
on February 15, 2009.

Our Pharmaceutical Assistance Program
About the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program:
Since 1988, we have helped thousands of Beaver County residents. The Pharmaceutical Assistance Program is designed to
assist Beaver County residents who are without prescription coverage. We help them acquire their prescription medication by
facilitating the paperwork between the patient, the prescribing physician and the pharmaceutical company who manufactures
that particular medication. We work with over 100 pharmaceutical firms and abide by their eligibility guidelines. We are
proud to say that there is no fee for this service.
Our statistics:
* We are currently serving 632 people.
* For these people, we are able to help them acquire a total of 2,291 medications on a monthly basis.
* In dollar figures, we are helping these same total number of patients acquire $329,547 worth of medications in one month’s
time. On a yearly basis that is over $3.95 million dollars worth of medication.

Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association has been assisting local residents for 54
years. Each and every year, we touch the lives of many people. In 2005, when the
association celebrated 50 years of services to the community, the Board of Directors
paid tribute to our founders, Dr. H. W. Bernhardy and Dr. D. W. Gressly and started
the Beaver County Cancer & Heart Association’s Giving Societies. By becoming a
member of a Giving Society, these people have allowed us to continue our mission
and dedication to the people of Beaver County.
