Rieger Sr. Ann Sakac Joseph Smith Thomas P. Sullivan Message from the President Daniel M. Grady, President and CEO This year is turning out to be a pivotal year in the evolution of healthcare services in this country. Hospice is in the middle of a seven year reduction to revenue with the sequestration we received an additional 2% reduction to revenue. These two cuts combined unchecked over time will have a detrimental effect on our ability to care for hospice patients. We are not in a unique position in healthcare as you can see by the local media. Other healthcare providers facing cuts have been forced to take drastic action to remain fiscally feasible. Thankfully as of today we have been able to meet the needs of our patients and families. In spite of the challenges we face I want to assure the community that we have been able to maintain our ability to serve the people of Orange and Sullivan Counties. ADMINISTRATION Gail Burton, RN, Vice President/COO Dr. Robert Dinsmore, Medical Director Daniel Grady, MS, President/CEO Jeanne Maltes, Vice President of Finance Our Staff and Volunteers have been doing an outstanding job of serving our patients during these times of extreme change with a passion for caring that is second to none. These wonderful team players are continuing the tradition of interdisciplinary care we began 25 years ago. In many ways the challenges we face today are similar to those we faced during start up. FOCUS STAFF Janice Valentino, Director of Marketing and Fund Development Rayna Wendell, Fund Development The good news is that Hospice is the answer to many of the problems that plague the long-term viability of our healthcare system. Hospice patients have not only a better quality of life than traditional care provides but it is also cost effective care. AUXILIARY BOARD OF DIRECTORS Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties is the leading source of information relating to end-of-life and palliative care in our community. 2 Mary Bonura Bonnie DiLorenzo Eileen Ernst, Corresponding Secretary Colleen Fogarty Ellen Galligan Nancy Kane Joan Kaplan Pam LaLonde, Recording Secretary Susan Najork, Past President Barbara Naru, President Helen Richards, 1st Vice President Elizabeth Rowley Janet Sullivan Rebecca Vanderloop Sue Wilk, 2nd Vice President Cathy Wood Carol Ziegler, Treasurer Candles Continue Connectiont -by Janice Valentino Seven years ago David H. Little, artist blacksmith of Winnipesaukee Forge, created his first “Tree of Life” for the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence. This beautiful tree was created to memorialize and honor loved ones and to provide funding to the Residence. Since that first tree, David has created at least ten more for other organizations, each one artistically distinctive from the other. It’s a very special moment for families and friends when they add these bronze, silver or gold leaves engraved with the name of their loved one to the tree. I have seen the lingered gaze of those who place a leaf on the tree, and thought it would be great if families could have something for their home to memorialize or honor their loved one. One day while looking at David’s Web site, I saw the beautiful Aspen Leaf Trio Candlesticks. The same creator of our tree and the design of the leaf was something to connect families to our “Tree of Life” and to hospice. If you would like to have the Aspen Leaf Trio for your home, contact the artist directly and a donation will be made to the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence in your honor. David H. Little, Winnepesaukee Forge, 5 Winona Road, Meredith, NH 03253 (603) 279-5492 or info@irontable.com “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words Victor Hugoand cannot remain silent.” Marilynn Garzione contacted Hospice to donate a self-playing baby grand piano in memory of her beloved husband, Patrick, who suffered from Alzheimer’s and received hospice care at home. While at home, Marilynn used music therapy for her husband, writing and playing the most beautiful music to keep him engaged. When Patrick passed away, Marilynn wanted to donate the piano to be used for music therapy so that other patients could benefit as well. Since the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence already had a piano, Hospice found a special home for Marilynn’s unique gift. Through the collaboration of Hospice and Elant at Meadow Hill, Marilynn’s piano has a new home where her dream of bringing music therapy to those who suffer has been realized. For more information about Marilynn Garzione, her book that focuses on caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s, “Released to the Angels,” or her music CDs, please visit http://releasedtotheangels. com. Elant Meadow Hill residents along with Marilynn Garzione, Janice Valentino and Melissa McCoy of the Elant Foundation Hospice Welcomes New Chairman of the Board The board of directors of Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties, Inc. elected former New York State Appellate Judge and longtime hospice supporter Anthony T. Kane to serve as chair at their April 4 board meeting. Kane retired as Associate Justice of the New York State Appellate Division, Third Department in 2009 and lives in Forestburgh, NY, with his wife Nancy. The Kanes are active members in their community and volunteer for many local organizations. They helped found the Forestburgh 5K more than five years ago. To date the event has raised more than $80,000 for Hospice programs. Judge Kane was honored at the 2011 Hospice Gala for his long-standing service to our organization. The following board officers were also elected at the April meeting: The Honorable Jeffrey G. Berry as vice-chairman, Ms. Susan Najork as secretary, Glen L. Heller, Esq. as Treasurer, and Ronald Barton as immediate past chair. Ronald Barton, Immediate Past Chair 3 The Hospice 25th “Silver Anniversary Ball” a Tremendous Success! On March 23, 2013 all welcomed spring at the highly anticipated Hospice 25th “Silver Anniversary Ball” which netted $140,000 for Hospice of Orange and Sullivan Counties. 370 guests enjoyed fine dining and dancing, and Hospice provided the guests with an individual professional photograph from the special evening (taken by Spencer Daniels Agency). A special video was presented to the guests that encapsulated the last 25 years of Hospice and brought back fond memories to many. Chairing the Gala Committee were Marilyn D’Ambrosio and Janet Sullivan, who did a fabulous job, along with Gloria Alisandrella, Director of Special Events, and the entire Gala Committee: Mary Bonura, Susan Crocker, Nancy Hastings, Sherri Heller, Kathy Jones, Nancy Kane, Rachelle Klugman, Joann Menendez, Peggy Milich, Susan Najork, Barbara Naru, Nancy Seliga, and Cathy Wood. 4 The beautiful venue, Anthony’s Pier 9, was further enhanced with the beauty and scent of floral arrangements provided by Flowers by David Anthony. The staff at Pier 9 outdid themselves once again and the guests rocked the dance floor to the music of The Motones. Silver Anniversary Sponsors were Smith, Seaman & Quackenbush, Inc. Funeral Homes and William F. Hogan Funeral Home. Major sponsors included Barton Birks Chevrolet Cadillac, Crystal Run Healthcare LLP, Dr. Robert Dinsmore, The Kaplan Family Foundations, Kiewit Companies, and Walden Savings Bank. Their contributions and those of all of our sponsors helped make the anniversary celebration both successful and unforgettable! Congratulations to raffle winner Kathy Jones of Monroe who is looking forward to her one-week stay at a Hyatt Regency Resort in Key West Florida! 5 The “Notebook” The idea came simply enough when hospice volunteer Elaine Aulogia had witnessed the joy of a resident when she awoke from a nap to read a note that was left from a family member who came to visit her while she was asleep. Linda Alfano and Elaine Aulogia with the notebooks at the KFHR. A committee of Kaplan Residence volunteers, Elaine Aulogia, Linda Alfano and Maureen Geiger, got together to see what could be done to help facilitate communication between family and friends who came to visit residents. The “Notebook” project was born. A simple notebook with a label on the cover for the resident’s name and a matching pen is making all the difference in the world. Family, friends and residents are now able to communicate their thoughts and messages to each other, and at the same time a lasting legacy of their time spent at the Kaplan Family Hospice Residence is being created. Thank you Elaine, Linda and Maureen for coming up with an idea that will forever bond family and friends to their loved one and to the care, comfort and compassion of hospice. AUXILIARY NEWS I would like to welcome the 34 new Auxiliary members who joined this year as part of our first annual Membership Drive held this past fall. We now have 130 members throughout Orange and Sullivan Counties who are Ambassadors for Hospice. Sixty Auxiliary Members and guests attended the Auxiliary Annual Meeting & Dinner held May 16, 2013 at West Hills Country Club in Middletown. The Membership voted on several By-laws revisions and extended a warm thank you to Founding Board Member Marilyn D’Ambrosio who recently announced her resignation. Marilyn served as Secretary in 2008 and 2009, 2nd VP and Fundraising Chair in 2010 and 2011, and 1st VP in 2012. We wish her all the best and hope she enjoys some much deserved downtime. Marilyn will continue to be an Auxiliary member and offer support with committees. 6 The Auxiliary Board of Directors met prior to the Annual Dinner and voted on officers for 2013. Changes include: Helen Richards, 1st VP, Sue Wilk, 2ndVP/Fundraising Chair, and Carol Ziegler, Treasurer. The highlight of the evening was guest speaker Gail S. Miller, LMSW, Hospice social worker and program director for the Children’s Grieving Center. Gail gave a moving presentation on how children grieve differently from adults and invited the audience to participate in some of the techniques used at the grieving center. All proceeds from the Hospice Hoe Down, held Sunday June 9th at Billy Joe’s Ribworks, will be donated to the Children’s Grieving Center. Auxiliary President Barbara Naru Marilyn D’Ambrosio If you or one of your friends, family, neighbors or coworkers is interested in becoming a member of the Auxiliary, please go to our website page www.hospiceoforange.com/auxiliary/ to download our membership form or email auxiliary@hospiceoforange.com Gail Miller explains a technique used to help grieving children.
