Our 25year-old grand Byron Bayers nephew was shot and killed in Denver this past week. A fine young man, Eagle Scout, football and track all-stater, big gentle giant with a great smile, wonderfully friendly to young and old alike, he was a community favorite. In fact he volunteered to coach a junior high team last year and also served as a lifeguard at the local pool. Some kind of a road rage confrontation started with an offduty policeman, not in uniform, in his own car. Hall of Merit inductees aren’t necessarily Hereford breeders but have, in their own ways, greatly influenced the Hereford breed and cattle industry. Bill Bennett Bill Bennett, Connell, Wash., was born into the purebred Shorthorn business. After attending Washington State College (now University), he married Norma Marsh, and they started their own Shorthorn business in western Washington. Then in the mid ’50s, they sold the Shorthorn business, and Bill went to work as the herdsman at Washington State. During this time he contributed to a beef science book and showed cattle for the university. By the time Bill moved to Connell, Wash., he and Norma had four children. The show of appreciation by the crowd and the association was especially moving to me and I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone. Fortunately, we will still be at most, if not all, of the Hereford events and will continue to see our Hereford friends. Pat Huston, Benson, MN, and Ken Werk, Herman, MN, ran their cow herds together at Huston Grain & Livestock Farm south of Benson, MN. Huston & Werk purchased their base cowherds from Ruchti Herefords several years ago. The background genetics come from the noted FHF brand, Fredericksons of Starbuck, MN. Bischoff ’s Ravine Creek Ranch, Huron, SD, is a family affair and this transaction saw the bulk of these two fine herds go to the younger families, son Matt & Heather Bischoff and daughter Lori Peskey and her husband Mike teamed up with Dad and Mom, Gerald and Janelle Bischoff to get these highly productive cows to South Dakota. On Saturday morning I picked up my grandson as I often do. It was a beautiful October day. The only cloud was a dark one in my mind. I needed to tell Jordan that we had put his calf to sleep. His calf had been born with Idiopathic Epilepsy, a fatal genetic disorder that has appeared in the Hereford population. Jordan knew that his calf was not well and was having seizures but, he did not know that the previous day Dr. Mark had drawn blood samples and euthanized him. As I was explaining what had happened, Jordan interrupted me and asked if “Davey” had cancer and if Dr. Dean had seen his calf. [Dr. Dean is Jordan’s favorite Vet.] I told Jordan what IE was and did the best I could to explain Idiopathic Epilepsy and genetics to an 11-year-old boy. When I used the blue eyes/brown eyes example that we all had in school I could see the gears in his head start to turn. He said it was good that we made David [the old bull] into hamburger. Jordan wondered if our new bull [Dan] had the bad gene too. I told him that we did a pedigree check and that Dan was not related to the “bad bull”. We talked about the blood samples that we were sending to Dr. Jon Beever and how his research would someday allow us to test for IE. Then his little “light bulb” came on again and he asked why we hadn’t checked the pedigree on David last year before we turned him out. I said that I did not know about the “bad gene” until this summer. He wondered if other people had bulls with the “bad gene,” too, and asked if they knew about the “bad gene.” When I explained to him that lots of people did not know he followed with the logical response — “Somebody needs to tell them!” I believe that an 11-year-old Hereford breeder has clearly recognized the first step in dealing with the Idiopathic Epilepsy crisis we are facing. We can no longer sweep it under the rug and hope it will go away. I trust that all of us with potential IE carriers will disclose this information to interested buyers and fully cooperate with the Association in dealing with this issue. A fellow Hereford breeder from another state called me recently and jokingly asked if I would be interested in some semen from a bull featured in a Hereford World ad. The bull was registered as a straight Line One Hereford yet he had no white on the top of his shoulders, underneath his neck, his chest, his legs, his belly or his tail. I have had the privilege to tour the Miles City, Montana Research herd and saw no such animals there. Several registered breeders have recently started featuring similar animals probably to get eye pigmentation. I suppose a neighbor’s exotic bull could have jumped the fence and back out without one’s knowledge, but I would think any experienced breeder with integrity would question and not register the calf instead of promoting it. With the DNA testing available today, such animals should be traced back to their original source if they are not dead and gone. Integrity problems are not confined to Herefords alone but exist in other breeds as well. Today one can find registered Angus bulls that produce calves with horns and unsplit hooves (a Holstein genetic problem). Fifty years ago with dwarfism many breeders resisted integrity to their own ruin. Now, as then, bad genetic problems are widespread. Hopefully, we won’t repeat such mistakes again. As then, the sad part about this is the number of honest breeders who will use descendants of such bulls thinking they are straight, pure Herefords from generations past only to find out they are lacking many of the great Hereford traits. While I can understand your concern about integrity in the breed, just because a Hereford has eye pigmentation doesn’t mean a Hereford isn’t straight-bred. Eye, scrotal and udder pigment are a highly sought after trait in many areas of the country especially the north where sun reflecting off of snow can cause bad sunburn in the winter. Eye pigmentation is also thought to reduce instances of pinkeye and possibly cancer eye. Pigmentation is especially sought after in northern states which don’t have corn stalks to graze and where the wind polishes snow to a sheen creating prime opportunity for sunburn. Commercial breeders who are crossbreeding also desire pigmentation. Furthermore, if you look back at old, old paintings of Hereford cattle you will see eye pigment and even profuse freckling on white faces. So, it really is a trait of straight-bred Herefords, however it might not be desired by you and others. I know there are areas of the country and Canada that really desire chrome on their Herefords and their horses. I guess it’s a matter of personal preference. Many breeders will tell you that pigmentation in Herefords can be bred out rather quickly. I don’t know what the heritablility is but I’m sure a geneticist could tell us a thing or two about it. Speaking of geneticists, in this day and age we have enough blood tests and DNA tests to safeguard our breed in the area of breed purity. By the end of the year we will have more DNA tests to identify genetic defects that have come to the forefront in recent years. HEREFORD AMERICA • December 2007 to the forefront in recent years. It really is a part of the Hereford genetics, past and present. — Jill Meadow Muffins The New Fangled Contraption ©2007 Ken Overcast My miker-wave oven just bit the dust. What a cowboy with his own personal cook is doin’ with one of those contraptions in the first place is another story. I’ll get to that in a minute. It was really old anyway. I’d had it for a long time, and it must have been one of the earliest models. It had leather straps on each side to pack it around, and a crank on the top just in case the power went out. I don’t think the crank ever worked, but then I couldn’t get the little woman to crank it so we could check it out… these modern women. A guy would have to be a rocket scientist to run this new outfit. The whole front end is covered with little blinky lights and beepy buttons. It looks like the dashboard on the space shuttle. Who knows what you’re ‘sposed to do if the power goes out? There isn’t even a crank on this new one, and I don’t think I’ll ever figure it out. If Ma croaks I’ll starve plumb to death. What those factories need is a just a regular, ordinary guy to help design the controls. I’m workin’ on a design right now, and when the word gets out, they’ll be fighting over it. I’ll probably be rich by next spring. The way I look at it, we can get by with just three buttons and a dial. The buttons will be for the cookin’ temperature, and they’ll just be labeled warm, hot, and hotter. The dial will just have three positions too, and will be for how long you want the stuff to cook. We could get by with buttons here too, but the idea is to keep this deal simple. There will be three little notches carved in the dial; 1. Not too long 2. Quite a while 3. A long time. I told you I was on to somethin’. The only problem is going to be sellin’ this to some miker-wave engineer. We’ll probably have trouble getting him to think up on our level. I think they go to school just to learn how to make stuff confusing. The little woman is sort of glad I can’t figure this new one out. I used the old one for all kinds of things. It was really good for warmin’ up my gloves and overshoes when they got left out on the porch, but where it really came in handy was cookin’ the hot patches on inner tubes. Don’t laugh. It works good. ‘Course everything that came out of it tasted sort of like rubber for a week or two afterwards. I got the old one f o r F a t h e r ’s D a y several years ago. It was a gift Ken and B.J. from the lady of the house after I got her a new hay baler for Mother’s Day. I guess what goes around comes around. I still got the best end of the deal, even though I didn’t use it for much other than heatin’ up the overshoes and the other stuff. She was a good hand on that baler too, and with it bein’ new, it wasn’t broke down too much. She was sort of possessive of it (you know how some women can be) and got real sore if somebody else drove it. I threatened her within an inch of her life ever’ time she made the bales the wrong length for the wagon. ‘Course I don’t think it scared her much, but somehow she did get to where she made ‘em just about right. Most ever’one knows the secret to a good lookin’ square bale haystack is having the bales the right length for the wagon. One day when I was in town, a fella complimented me on the way our stacks looked, and asked me the secret. “Nothin’ to it.” was my answer. “You just gotta sleep with the baler man.” He got quite a kick out of that, but then he KNEW the “baler man” on our place was a girl. Nowadays a guy might have to be a little more careful how you threw that sort of stuff around. A stranger might plumb get the wrong idea. Time marches on I guess. We lost the baler one of the times we went broke. I ain’t sure if we’ve gone broke one big long time or two or three short ones. I guess it really doesn’t matter, but now with the old miker-wave busted, you could say this is the end of an era. The cook not only got even with me on the first deal, but now I can’t start to run this new contraption, and she isn’t about to show me how. I guess that means she comes out on top. We look forward to having more time to actually visit with people at the South Dakota Hereford events! Thanks South Dakota!!! Once again South Dakota had a super weekend of annual meeting, banquet and Excellence Sale. I commend breeders for their continued support and participation. We had well over 100 people at the banquet and a full house for the sale. I sympathize with other states who struggle getting a good turnout at their annual events. The South Dakota group has had an organized association for over 60 years. I’d say over these years they have learned to get along even though they might not agree with one another from time to time. They also realize the importance of continuity in their organization and working together. There are a bunch of hard workers here in this state and they are usually up for a new challenge. Support for new things such as the ribeye steak sandwich booth at DakotaFest has been tremendous and it’s been a good thing for the breed and the state association. Breeders work together at this annual event, have a great time and accomplish something for our association. I think I can also say, they don’t care what head shape the other guy’s cattle have! The shooter then held his gun to the other young man and threatened to shoot him too, but did not. The off-duty officer is under investigation and now the case goes to a Grand Jury. The local funeral attracted over 500 people, including our former Governor, who spoke in David’s honor. Both David and his father have worked on our ranch while growing up and it makes our family wonder what this world is coming to when a fine young man like David was gunned down. There are too many of these kinds of incidents everywhere in the world. Marc, Pauline and I traveled into David Rossiter Canada this week for the first sale to be held in Alberta since the border was announced to open. The AdamsHirsche sale was interesting and very good. They have sold several higher priced bulls into the US that have never been delivered. The owners are now making plans to get the bulls to their new homes. (It would be interesting to know how many bulls purchased by American buyers are still in Canada). We are looking at 3 to 5-year-old bulls. Several heifers were sold south of the border but the bull business is a little slower in returning. One of the reasons is the money value. The Canadian dollar was worth 9% more than our dollar on sale day. I can remember buying a bull in Canada in the ‘70s and had to pay 18% more. Just before the border was closed to shipments to the US the Canadian dollar was worth 40% less than ours. That year many bulls were coming into the US commercial herds. Our Canadian friends tell us that the weaker American dollar has really hurt the commercial industry in Canada. We also read in the paper the morning we left Great Falls that the flow of Canadian shoppers was greatly increased after the change in money values in the two countries. We got to the border at 7:00 a.m. and it took about 15 minutes (yes, passports are needed now) but the night before Benny Brillhart (the Canadian auctioneer calls him Benny) and Brent Meeks told us that it took them three hours and thirty minutes to clear because so many Canadian shoppers were going home after a big three-day holiday in Montana. It did seem to our observation that when people found the cattle that they wanted in the sale that the currency valuation was not a factor in their purchase decision. The pain the Canadian cattlemen have endured is terrible and we as good people need to understand that. A good neighbor is a good neighbor. Don’t forget that. Some of the guys at the coffee shop will argue with me but I will stand my ground. This will be the last issue of Hereford America for 2007. We have covered the continent from Canada in the north to Texas in the south and from the west coast to Ohio. Marc and Jill do most of the traveling now. Our visits with the good Hereford people are interesting and we enjoy meeting new people but we sure like to run into folks we have known for a long time. I am always pleasantly surprised when Hereford people passing by stop in and visit us in Montana. They immediately became involved in performance testing their cattle and enrolled the entire herd in the AHA’s performance testing program. In 1969 their partner’s poor health forced them to liquidate much of their herd, and although they bought out his portion, they were left with only 15 head. Although it started small, Bill and Norma’s own ranch, BB Cattle Co., quickly grew in size and reputation. Cheryl Thomas, now an Oregon, Washington, Northern Idaho Hereford Association (OWNI) director, says even as a young girl she was very impressed with Bill. “BB Cattle Co. produced bulls and heifers that were an enviable tribute to him, his work ethic and his knowledge of the breed,” Cheryl says. His hard work has paid off; the ranch now consists of about 1,000 acres of irrigated cropland and 5,000 acres of grass. BB Cattle Co. consigns cattle to national sales and hosts an annual bull sale of its own. BB Cattle Co. bulls have won the Jack Owens Ideal Range Bull Award three times and the ranch has shown numerous carload champions and reserves at the National Western Stock Show. Bill was also awarded the Beef Improvement Federation’s (BIF) Seedstock Producer of the Year Award in 1988. Bill has always been a leader in the cattle industry. He served as an AHA director from 1985-91, as well as being involved in the Washington Cattlemen’s Association. In addition, he has been active in OWNI and the Western States Hereford Association. James Bennett James Bennett, Red House, Va., operates Knoll Crest Farm (KCF), which has long been known for its performance-based genetics. KCF consists of more than 500 registered cows in south central Virginia. The Bennetts have been in the seedstock business since 1944, when James’s father bought his first polled Hereford cattle. In 1963, after getting their feet wet in the business, they started collecting performance data and tracking beef improvement. Not only have James and his wife, Barbara, strived to improve their herd, but they have also worked to help others test their cattle. In 1972 KCF started a bull test station for the Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement Association, which served breeders for 25 years. James became very involved in BIF and in 1973 was elected to the board of directors. He served as BIF vice president in 1974 and president in 1978. He was also very involved in the American Polled Hereford Association, serving on the board of directors from 1983-86 and as chairman in 1987. His dedication to improving his herd and the Hereford breed is evident as KCF was HEREFORD AMERICA • December 2007 named a spring 2007 Gold Total Performance Records (TPRTM) breeder. James Bennett has represented the Hereford breed well. KCF was awarded BIF Seedstock Producer of the Year in both 1978 and 1998. Despite all the awards won and leadership positions served, most importantly, James is a true cattleman, says Don Trimmer, Accelerated Genetics beef genetics manager. “James is a true gentleman in the cattle industry. His friendly smile and firm handshake greet everyone he meets, whether they are an old friend or new visitor,” Trimmer says. James is also a family man. He and his wife, Barbara, have a daughter, Beth, and four sons, Paul, Jim, Brian and Jonathon. Sid Rogers, Rolling Hills Farm, Winchester, Va., says, “Those who know James can attest to his outstanding character, love of family and church, and devotion to producing performanceimproving cattle.” Rob Hooper Rob Hooper was introduced to ranching in 1945 after he returned from 47 combat missions as a gunner in World War II. His wife, Mary, had grown up on a commercial Hereford operation in Oregon. They worked for her parents at first and then, with still very little experience, started their own small commercial ranch in Nutrioso, Ariz. They added to their outfit in 1953, when they purchased a nine-section ranch in Springerville, Ariz. Although the ranch needed some work, they built a herd of well-bred Hereford cattle and, thus, began in the registered cattle business. Since then Rob has produced quality horned and polled Hereford seedstock for 54 years on the Hooper Hereford Ranch. Throughout the years the Hoopers continued to expand and grew to encompass 31 sections in Arizona and New Mexico. Fellow Hereford breeder, Lee Hutchens, Fallon, Nev., says since Rob started in the business, “He has never wavered in his devotion to the Hereford breed and has been tireless in mentoring, promoting and encouraging others.” He has done this through being active in the Arizona and New Mexico Cattle Growers Associations and serving as president of the Arizona Hereford Association and advisor for the Arizona Junior Cattle Growers Association and the Arizona Junior Hereford Association. He and Mary helped with countless 4H, FFA and junior association field days and activities. They helped start the Arizona National Junior Heifer Show and Sale. Because of his involvement and dedication, Rob was named Arizona Cattleman of the Year in 1999. Hooper Hereford Ranch was named premier exhibitor at the 1985 and 1997 Arizona National Stock Show. Its success spanned decades. Its cattle topped sales and won shows in Arizona and New Mexico and around the country starting in the ’60s. Their eldest daughter, Roxanne, and her husband run a Hereford-based commercial operation in Springerville, Ariz., and their sons, Daric and Lance along with their wives, also raise cattle and help Rob. The couple’s son, Steve, and his wife continue to raise registered Herefords at Hooper Cattle Co., Quemado, N.M. And, although their younger daughter, Sharyl, lives in Scottsdale, Ariz., she returns often to visit the ranch. Stanley Stout When a sudden heart attack took Col. Stanley E. Stout on April 30, 2006, a deafening silence fell over the entire livestock industry. “The Colonel,” as many called him, deeply affected all who heard his auctioneer’s chant or, better yet, heard him declare “sold” for one of their cattle. Many would agree Stout made the auction more exciting and interesting. There was never a dull moment when he was behind the microphone. Stout was a purebred livestock auctioneer, but he was more than that to so many in the cattle industry. Stanley was raised on a Hereford ranch in Cottonwood Falls, Kan. He graduated from Kansas State University (K-State) and then went to Walter Britton Auctioneer School in Bryan, Texas. After finishing his education, he worked for the AHA showing and managing a Hereford herd in Japan. After his return to the U.S., Stanley worked in the livestock publications industry as a field representative for Western Livestock Journal and then Drovers Journal before being promoted to head of field staff for Drovers. He later worked as director of advertising for the Charolais Banner. In 1975 he started Stanley E. Stout Auction Services. Thus began more than 30 years of selling cattle with a joke and a smile. He was the premier auctioneer to have at a production sale and usually filled his calendar with between 140 and 180 sales per year. Keeping that schedule meant a lot of road time in his Cadillac. He was more than an auctioneer — he was deeply involved in the industry. He worked to revitalize the American Royal Livestock Show. He served on the Board of Governors and worked the sale. Now the exhibitor of the supreme champion heifer at the Royal receives the Stanley Stout Memorial Scholarship. “Stanley was one of those you never can replace,” says John Vanier, CK Ranch, Brookville, Kan. “He created a lot of enthusiasm for the Hereford breed. He made each auction he called more exciting and there was never a dull minute when he was behind the microphone. He spent his lifetime making people laugh. He was one of a kind and is greatly missed.” At the time of his death, Stanley was a member of the AHA and a proud supporter of his alma mater, K-State, through the Ahearn Club and Block & Bridle. In honor of his life, K-State has begun a fund-raising effort to build a livestock-marketing center on campus. After the last K-State production sale Stout conducted he mentioned the need for such a facility. Stanley was also a member of the American Quarter Horse Association, National Auctioneers Association and Livestock Marketeers. He was a member of the board of directors of the American Royal and an active Chase County, Kan., 4-H alumnus. His wife, Brenda; son, Justin Stout; three daughters, Jessie Romfo, Jamie Felton and Jodie Brethour; six grandchildren; two stepsons and a stepdaughter, along with his friends in the livestock industry, continue to do as he would have wanted and celebrate his accomplishments in life. HEREFORD AMERICA • December 2007 DeShazer Elected American Hereford Association President KANSAS CITY, Mo – Hank DeShazer, Hearne, Texas, was announced as the new president of the American Hereford Association (AHA) at the Annual Membership Meeting in Kansas City, Mo., Oct. 22. His goals for the AHA include growing the Certified Hereford Beef® program, increase Hereford market share and expanding breed improvement studies. DeShazer owns DeShazer Cattle Co. in Hearne, where about 400 Hereford calves are born each year and 150-200 bulls are sold private treaty. DeShazer was elected to the AHA board in 2004. This past year, he served as AHA vice president and chaired the finance and building committees, and also served on the executive and show and sale committees. Bill King, Stanley, N.M., will team with DeShazer as the AHA vice-president. King owns Bill King Ranch which includes a 300 head registered Hereford cow-calf operation along with other cattle and farming enterprises. This past year, King served on the performance/breed improvement, show and sale and building committees. Completing their terms on the board were outgoing president, Jack Evans, Winona, Miss.; Steve Folkman, Ixonia, Wis.; and Lavette Teeter, Mooresville, N.C.. The membership elected three new directors to the AHA Board on Oct. 22. Jerry Huth, Oakfield, Wis.; James Milligan, Kings, Ill.; and John Woolfolk, Jackson, Tenn., will serve four year terms on the 12member board. Woolfolk Farms is a diversified family farm located in western Tennessee. Established in 1865, the Century Farm added the first registered Herefords in 1950. Cow herd size has increased steadily to 150 cows. The Woolfolks sell registered heifers and bulls private treaty and through consignment sales. In 2003 the family started breeding 100 registered cows to Angus and Balancer bulls. The F1 females are developed and sold either as bred heifers or as cow-calf pairs. Steers are sold in either the Tennessee Beef Alliance Sale or the Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program sale in order to collect as much performance and carcass data as possible. In addition to the cattle herd, the farming operation includes cotton, soybeans and hybrid Bermuda hay. John received his bachelor’s degree from University of Tennessee-Martin and his master’s degree from Kansas State University. He works for Tennessee Producer Genetics as the coordinator of the Tennessee Beef Cattle Alliance. In May 2003, the United States closed the border to cattle imports from Canada. It then reopened for Canadian beef from younger cattle within months of the original ban, and live cattle under the age of 30 months have been allowed to move across the border since July 2005. But the border has remained closed to older cattle until now. Photo by Amy Adkerson Group Effort Yields Successful Tennessee Hereford Sale KANSAS CITY, Mo – One thousand and eight head of age, source and health verified Herefords and Hereford-crosses brought $55,000 in premiums for more than 75 consignors to the 9th Annual Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program Sale October 29. The Certified Hereford Beef® (CHB) and Hereford Verified eligible calves from seven states – Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio and Tennessee – were sold at the Tennessee Livestock Producers’ Barn in Columbia, TN. A University of Tennessee analysis revealed that compared to the week’s Tennessee auction average, some consignors earned, on average, an additional $69.15 per head by participating in organized marketing efforts, bringing together the numbers and verification that feeders demand. Headed by the Tennessee Horned and Polled Hereford Associations, and backed by a strong team of representatives from this year’s seven consigning states, the sale has met and far exceeded its initial goal: to obtain the quoted average price of all cattle seeing in auctions across the state of Tennessee. John Woolfolk, newly elected American Hereford Association (AHA) board member, Hereford breeder and Marketing Specialist for Tennessee Livestock Producers said that these Hereford cattle topped the Tennessee sales for the week because they were part of a program. “These cattle were feedlot ready. Our producers listened to what the feeders demanded in a health program and weaned the calves and gave the proper shots weeks before the sale. We limited the number of problem cattle like late cuts, poor doers and sick cattle. We sorted the calves into feeding outcome groups and created invaluable uniformity.” Woolfolk added that a key point to the sales success was a group effort by everybody involved. He said that the producers, Merial Animal Health, The Tennessee Department of Agriculture, The University of Tennessee and the American Hereford Association all exhibited a spirit of cooperation with their minds all focused on the feedlot customer. Berry competed Oct. 16 with eight other Wyoming agriculture college students in the event held at the UW College of Agriculture. The competition is designed to simulate a committee meeting where discussion and active participation are expected from each committee member. The competition was open to all Wyoming college agriculture students. Contestants are given predetermined topics. Ford Co. is one of the feed lots working with AHA and did an excellent job with our records and “ear tags” in 2006, so the prospect of getting good data on the 310 calves that were placed on feed there is very good. • Randy DeBruin, RSD Farms, Oskaloosa, IA was present for the second year and bought four loads (280 head) for his Vande Rose Farms Premium Hereford branded program. Randy brought carcass data to the sale from some of the cattle that he fed last year. • Tom Feller, Wisner, NE was also a buyer. Tom had bought out of two previous sales, but had never been to Tennessee. As a part of sale promotion, we assisted these buyers with their travel expenses in order to encourage them to be present for the sale. She was honored at the AHW Annual Meeting in Kansas City on Oct. 20. Marlene is the president of the Colorado Hereford Women. She served on the AHW board from 1998-2004 and was treasurer from 2000-04. “Marlene has been a willing worker for our organization before and after the time she spent on the board,” says Sylvia Moore, past AHW president from Willcox, Ariz. “She has been a true friend to all Hereford breeders. While she was on the board, she could be counted on to fulfill her responsibilities. She was always prepared to do whatever was needed to make the organization successful.” Marlene is an important part of her family’s Sidwell Herefords. She helps with daily chores of ranching and has helped organize the ranch sales and tours. She assists with calving, branding and yearly trips to the National Western Stock Show. In addition to helping with the cattle, she is responsible for bookkeeping and taking photos. “Marlene is proud to be a Hereford breeder and to continue the tradition of living on the range,” says Marguerite Gies, Colorado Hereford Auxiliary secretary from Eaton, Colo. A Colorado native, Marlene graduated with honors from Aims Community College in Greeley with a degree in accounting. She worked full time while going to school and raising her family. For 21 years Marlene has worked at the State Farm Insurance regional office in Greeley. During her tenure, she has earned numerous customer service awards. Active in her community, Marlene served on the Ag Hoc committee and her church board. She is also active in her church ladies club, North Weld recreational club and Weld County CattleWomen. She has participated in many plays and performed at the Cheyenne Veterans Home and the Atlas Theater in Cheyenne. In 2008 Marlene and her husband, Harold, will be celebrating 50 years of marriage. The same year, the ranch will celebrate 100 years of raising purebred Herefords. Day, “Bud” to all his friends was born on May 30, 1928 to Delbert and Bernice (Griffith) Day at Deadwood, SD. He was the second of 8 children and grew up on the Day family homestead south of Dupree. There he attended the Fairview rural school. He began working at a young age for area ranchers, shearing sheep, helping with the brandings, and breaking horses. Bud’s mother passed away when he was 16 and he helped his father with the care of his younger siblings. He worked with his father in the Black Hills logging for a time. In 1946 he began following the rodeos produced by Eddie Bachman of Faith. He not only helped trail the broncs to the various locations, but competed in saddle bronc, bareback, calf roping, bull dogging, bull riding, breakaway roping, and the wild horse races. In April of 1951 he joined the US Army and served in Korea. He was discharged in Jan. of 1953 after being wounded in Action. Bud was a Purple Heart Recipient. Returning to Western South Dakota, he resumed his rodeo career and was active in the S.D.R.A, the IRA and NRCA, winning over 40 saddles and 200 buckles, before he stopped counting. He was married to Iris Carmichael on Dec. 15, 1954 at Bison, SD and they began ranching in the Tri County area. Four daughters and three sons were born to this union. They raised their family on a ranch north of Dupree for 16 years and since 1975 when they purchased her parents ranch along Thunder Butte Creek in Perkins County. They raised and trained Quarter Horses and livestock. Bud continued rodeoing as long as he could, was a certified judge for many years, was an Honoree in the Casey Tibbs Foundation in 1991, and was inducted into the South Dakota Hall of Fame in 1992. The Day’s encouraged their children and grandchildren to be active in rodeo and 4-H. He built a training barn on the ranch in 1979 and found much joy in the hours spent training his horses and guiding the youth in the area with their horsemanship. He and Iris were instrumental in the formation of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (Cowboys). He will be long remembered for loving his family first and foremost and coming in a close second would be the sport of rodeo. He made many friends over the years through rodeo and in later years while watching his grandchildren compete. He loved giving them “pointers” and suggestions. Bud was a member of the SDRA, NRCA, the American Quarter Horse Assoc. and a faithful member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1956. He passed from this life on Oct. 20, 2007 at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 20 days at Fort Meade Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Penor John Albert Penor was born January 26, 1910, in a sod house in Rainbow Township, Perkins County, south of Bison, SD. In the spring of 1907, his family traveled by train to Sturgis and then by horse and buggy along the Bismarck Trail to Bison. They constructed a sod house that John lived in his entire life. He was the sixth child born to Collis and Minnie (Dueschle) Penor. John attended Bison school and at age 16, barely out of the eight grade, he took over operation of the family farm and ranch. He farmed the land, raised sheep, cattle, swine, and Arabian horses. Carl Jensen The cattle industry is a little less bright with the passing of one of the major contributors to the custom semen collection industry. Carl Jensen passed away October 3rd. His loss has left a huge hole in the herd of all those at Hawkeye Breeders Service, Inc. Carl spent the last two decades going all over the Midwest to talk to customers and breeders and to help make sure that your bull is going to do what he is supposed to do when you turn him out with the girls every year. Carl married Gloria, the daughter of Lloyd and Doris Jungmann, the unofficial “King and Queen” of the AI industry twenty-eight years ago. Having grown up in an urban setting, he hit a few bumps along the road when he joined the family business and decided to make the transition from a city slicker to a country boy. Persistence and hard work prevailed and before anyone knew it he was on the road testing and collecting bulls like he had been doing it all along. Carl loved his family and loved his job. He was usually the first one through the gates in the morning and he was often the last one to leave. His love of animals and desire to constantly learn and grow in knowledge of what it takes to make a first rate cattle herd was evident to all. He always greeted everyone with a smile; and his sense of humor, although sometimes misunderstood, was always meant to help share his easygoing attitude towards life. Carl is survived by four children and their spouses, and six grandchildren. Carl will be missed by all those that knew him. His personality was one of a kind. She grew up in the Huron area, graduating from Huron High School in 1930. She went to Columbus Jr. College, receiving her teaching certificate, before teaching in the rural elementary schools in Fairfield and Theresa township schools in Beadle County. On June 10, 1939, she married Earl G. Bischoff in Huron and they made their home on the farm in Fairfield Township. They retired from the farm in 1977 to their home in Huron at 1525 Lawn Ridge Avenue. Earl died October 14, 1996. In February of 2007 Loretta moved to StoneyBrooke Suites in Hu- ron. She was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church and the Altar Society, serving as president for several years. He earned his agriculture degree in 1936 from the University of Missouri at Columbia, where he distinguished himself as a member of the winning 1935 International Livestock Judging Team in Chicago. Jewett was a Director for the American Polled Hereford Association from 1972 to 1975. His lifetime dedication to the improvement and advancement of Hereford cattle throughout the world was recognized and honored by the Missouri Polled Hereford Association Hall of Fame in 1993, receiving their Leadership Award. At the National Western Livestock Show in 1992, he was named Marketer of the Year. During his long and distinguished career, he literally traveled the world promoting the Hereford breed. For a number of years, he sold and managed 17 out of the 20 top Polled Hereford sales in the United States. When former President Ronald Reagan was campaigning for the presidency, he visited the Fulkerson 5-J Farm in Liberty and spoke to the citizens of Clay County. Jewett was devoted to the political process and believed avidly that all citizens should be involved. He led by example, serving for many years as a Precinct Committeeman, and later, serving on the Clay County Missouri Republican Central Committee. He represented Missouri as National Committeeman for 11 years. In 1964, he ran for Missouri's Lieutenant Governor. In 1960, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago; in 1964, San Francisco; 1972, Dallas and 1980, Detroit. He attended three other Republican Conventions, and in 1976 served as Chairman of the Host Committee in Kansas City. In 2005, Jewett was honored as Outstanding Clay County Republican. He was appointed by four U.S. presidents to serve on the Presidential Scholars' Committee, an 18-year commitment. His trips to the White House to present this award each year to the nation's 100 most outstanding high school students, were truly rewarding for him. Jewett believed strongly in the value of community service. In 1958, he became a charter member of Clayview Country Club, and later was founder of Liberty Hills Country Club. He was instrumental in creating Liberty Hills Development Company, as well as creating the residential subdivision of Fulkerson Estates. In 1987, he received the Clay County Development Corporation's Look North Award. He was a principal figure in the establishment of Liberty National Bank, which was eventually purchased by United Missouri Bank. He served as a Director on the UMB Board until his death. The development of the Park System throughout Missouri remained a lifelong project for Jewett. For eight years he served as a member of the Missouri State Park Board and he has been a member of the Clay County Park board for the past 15 years. He was always committed to the development and preservation of public lands for the benefit and use of the citizens. He was a 50-year member of the First Presbyterian Church of Liberty. In 1940, Jewett married Carolyn Elizabeth Jenkins of Kansas City, Missouri. Their 59-year marriage was one of great love and devotion.
