SCIH Update December 2012 Swiss Centre for International Health SCIH Health Systems Guidance Handbook Ranks High in Independent Review of Guidelines Handbooks A recent independent review (PLoS ONE 2012) assessing the quality of 19 handbooks outlining methods to produce guidelines has ranked the Swiss TPH, Swiss Centre for International Health's (SCIH) as second best. The SCIH produced the handbook in the context of a World Health Organization (WHO) mandate with Rockefeller Foundation funding. It describes approaches, methods and tools to assist guidance developers select, appraise, combine and present evidence to support decisions on health systems policies. More… MBA in International Health Management In Spring 2013, the Swiss TPH will begin offering a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) in International Health Management. The course will be the first MBA in this area worldwide. Target groups are technical staff from Global Health Initiatives, but also grant recipients in partner countries. More… Medicines Management Seminar in Nairobi This December, a seminar based on the German International Cooperation (GIZ) blended e-learning course on medicines management took place in Nairobi with 24 participants from African countries. Organised by the SCIH Systems Support Unit (SySU), the course focused on the development of a transfer project proposal based on the log frame approach, integrating knowledge and skills gained during the online phase of the course. Five small scale and feasible proposals were presented based on the participants’ respective work situations. Some seed money to support the best projects will be provided by the GIZ. Participants at medicines management eLearning course in Nairobi Quality Training in Romania The SRHU took part in facilitating the final conference of the EU funded quality management (QM) training program in Romania. The conference was well attended and participants reported on their experience with continuous quality improvement projects in their hospitals. With this project, CRED (Romanian-Swiss Centre for Health Sector Development established in 2004 by the SCIH) has extended its network of partners from professional groups (neonatologists, obstetricians) to hospital managers nationwide. CRED is currently developing a Neonatal ward in Romanian hospital strategy to develop a brand on QM systems support for hospitals to position itself in this market sector. Newly Awarded Review of Swiss Vaccination Coverage The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health has awarded SySU the mandate, “Accompagnement extern pour priorisation des strategies permettant d’améliorer la couverture vaccinale” (Support in strategy prioritization to improve immunization coverage). The assignment will consist of a literature review to assess possible strategies in Switzerland on how to increase vaccination coverage.
