Lower Rio Grande Valley soil testing
campaign runs through February
by ROD SANTA ANA
SPECIAL TO THE MONITOR
WESLACO — The Texas A&M
AgriLife Extension Service in
the Lower Rio Grande Valley is
offering its annual soil testing
campaign through February.
A campaign kickoff event has
been scheduled for Thursday.
“We’re encouraging all commercial agricultural producers
in Hidalgo,
Cameron and
Willacy Counties to take
part in this
free soil testing
campaign to
help the environment and
their bottom lines,” said Ashley
Gregory, AgriLife Extension assistant in Weslaco. “This will be
the 14th year in a row we’re offering this service and it’s been
hugely successful.”
The campaign began Oct. 1
and runs through Feb. 28, she
said.
“The soil testing campaign
first began here in 2001 and has

The annual soil testing campaign has been instrumental in
reducing excess nutrients from
entering the Arroyo Colorado,
and “it’s a service we hope to
continue providing,” she said.
A Fortune 500, multi-state
healthcare organization will be offering
free health services at Los Fresnos
Elementary School on Oct. 18,
according to a news release.
Molina Healthcare of Texas is
teaming up with local partners to
hosting a “Tour of Giving” in an effort
to give back to those in need. The
event is free and open to the public,
officials said.
The event, to be held from 7 to
11 a.m., will include a 5-kilometer
run and Zumba for participants, as
well as giveaways, health information
and Medicaid application assistance,
the release said.
Molina will distribute free tote
bags and first aid kits to the first
100 attendees. Additionally,
several community partners will
be in attendance to provide free
immunizations, visions screenings,
diabetes/high blood pressure checks,
school supplies and shoes, and even
haircuts, among other services, the
release said.
