Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time
I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.
—Philippians 4:13
COME TO THE FEAST
“On this mountain, the Lord of hosts / will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich food and
choice wines” (Isaiah 25:6). That’s what Isaiah tells us today. God is putting together a
huge party for “all peoples,” to “wipe” away / the tears from every face” (Isaiah 25:8).
And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he says, “may be likened to a king who
gave a wedding feast for his son” (Matthew 22:2). When the guests didn’t come, the king
had his servants go out “into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find”
St. Luke
(Matthew 22:9). We are called to deliver that invitation.
October 18
One of the themes woven into today’s liturgy is that of divine generosity. Asleep to reality,
people often think they have “earned” what they have. In our better moments, though, we know that all our gifts—even
the spiritual gifts—come through God’s generosity. Our vocation is to invite people, to remind them the tickets aren’t
for sale. We can only show up and say, thank you.

A Note From our Pastor:
Papal Zucchetto’s of Pope Francis and Pope-emeritus, Pope Benedict XVI
A generous parishioner, Ms. Marcia Barbacki, has presented to the parish two papal zucchettos, one worn by Pope
Benedict XVI and the other worn by Pope Francis. A zucchetto is the white skullcap that popes wear on their heads
as part of their everyday vesture. Immemorial custom allows anyone presented to the pope in private to make a
presentation of a white zucchetto to the Holy Father. Custom requires that the Holy Father, in turn, replace it for his
own, giving his to the guest as a token of his appreciation.
I thought it opportune to make the zucchettos available to the faithful. Since most of our parishioners will never be
able to see the Holy Father in person, this is perhaps the closest they may ever get to a pope in their lifetime. Also,
given the unique circumstance of having a reigning Pontiff and a living Pope-emeritus, I thought it best to present
both zucchettos concurrently.
As shown in the bulletin, one zucchetto was received directly from Pope Benedict XVI and this is attested by his
Personal Secretary, Archbishop Georg Ganswein. The other zucchetto was gained in an audience in St. Peter’s
Square with Pope Francis by a Catholic University student. Msgr. Alfred Xuereb, the Personal Secretary of Pope
Francis attested to its authenticity.
Given the special nature of the gift to the parish, a parishioner has designed and built a display case for the two
zucchettos. Entirely hand crafted, the case also has etched glass showing the coats-of-arms of Pope Francis and
Pope Benedict XVI.
On the weekend of October 18th and 19th, after all the Masses, the papal zucchetos will be displayed in the
sanctuary of Holy Spirit, following a prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:
Blessing of Animals - October 4th, (Feast of St.
Francis of Assisi) Deacon Curtis blessed our beloved pets on this special day.
Thank you Suzanne Falcone for the photo.
“Today vast numbers of people still do not know Jesus Christ.”
Pope Francis begins his message for this year’s celebration of World Mission Sunday with these words. But he quickly offers us the way to make a
joy-filled, life-giving difference in this regard. “World Mission Sunday is a
privileged moment when the faithful of various continents engage in prayer and concrete gestures of solidarity in support of the young Churches in
mission lands.”
On October 18 & 19, our diocesan family celebrates this
“privileged moment;” let us join our brothers and sisters around the world
who will gather at the Lord’s Table to celebrate, with great joy, our common vocation as missionaries. Our prayers and concrete gestures of solidarity will help build local churches, like the church in Mongolia, the
world’s youngest Catholic Church, and churches across the globe. Through
the work of these churches, and their witness to Christ, the poor receive
practical help and experience God’s love and mercy, His hope and peace.
Your financial help on World Mission Sunday, offered in the
collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, will support the
1,150 young mission dioceses and communities who await the “Good
News” of Jesus as their saving hope.
Pope Francis encourages us to take joyful part in the Church’s
mission to all the nations, as we live our lives grounded in love for Jesus
and concern for the needs of the most disadvantaged. May World Mission
Sunday offer each one of us an opportunity to accomplish both, as we
share the joy of the Gospel and help the poor by our fervent prayer and
through
generous hearts!

Church, please visit the special World Mission Sunday web site:
