A Message From Father Bill:
This Wednesday, October 15th, one hundred twenty-four of our young
people will be celebra ng the Sacrament of Confirma on administered in
two sessions by the Vicar of the Central Vicariate of the Diocese of Rockville
Centre, Monsignor James McNamara.
At that me, it will be confirmed that those receiving the Sacrament
want a rela onship with God to be part of their future, and that the Holy
Spirit will be present in their lives to keep that rela onship strong.
With the support of their parents and families and catechists and sponsors, they have been preparing in a very dedicated way to come to this extremely important moment in their lives.
Our Parish is tremendously proud of these young people celebra ng
Confirma on. I myself have experienced them to be friendly, respec ul, kind,
caring, reflec ve, insigh ul, and having terrific priori es. The world is going
to be in very good hands with them.
When Jesus looks at them, I am sure Our Lord does one of His favorite
things—JESUS SMILES.
We offer our hear elt congratula ons to them and their families. May
they feel God’s love and care all throughout their lives.
Fr. Bill
Because of the 2:00 PM Confirma on Mass this Wednesday,
October 15th, Exposi on of the Blessed Sacrament will begin
at 5:00 PM and not at 3:00 PM as usual on Wednesdays.
November 1 - All Saints Day
This year, because November 1st is on a Saturday,
All Saints’ Day is not a Holy Day of Obliga on.
On All Saints’ Day, Saturday, November 1, Mass will
be celebrated only at 8:00 AM.
All Saints’ Day Mass—8 AM
All Souls’ Remembrance
Sunday, November 2nd, is “All Souls' Day.”
At our regular 12 Noon Mass on that Sunday,
all our parishioners who passed to eternal life this past year,
will be remembered in a special way.
Please return your All Souls' Mass Remembrance
Envelope by Friday, October 31, so that your deceased
loved ones may be remembered in our All Souls Day
Mass. An All Souls Remembrance Envelope was included in the September/October packet of Church
envelopes that you received in the mail. Extra All
Souls' Mass Remembrance Envelopes can be found at
the doors of the Church. The All Souls' Day Envelopes
may be returned in the Sunday Collec on or placed in
the Rectory Door Mail Slot.
World Mission Sunday
World-Wide Second Collection - October 19
Next Sunday, World Mission Sunday, our Holy Father, Pope Francis, calls
every Catholic to celebrate at the Eucharist, our voca on to be missionary and to help the Missions. As Catholics around the world, here at
home and in the Missions, gather at the Eucharis c table, let us pray for
the Church’s worldwide mission and offer financial help through the
Propaga on of the Faith for more than 1,150 dioceses in Asia, Africa,
La n America and the Pacific Islands. Addi onal offering envelopes can
be found in the back of the Church. Thank you for your generosity.
Come To The Feast
"On this mountain, the Lord of hosts / will provide for all peoples / a feast of rich food and
choice wines" (Isaiah 25:6). That's what Isaiah tells us today. God is pu ng together a huge
party for "all peoples," to "wipe away / the tears from every face" (Isaiah 25:8).
And what does Jesus tell us? The reign of God, he says, "may be likened to a king who gave a
wedding feast for his son" (Ma hew 22:2). When the guests didn't come, the king had his
servants go out "into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find" (Ma hew
22:9). We are called to deliver that invita on.
One of the themes woven into today's liturgy is that of divine generosity. Asleep to reality,
people o en think they have "earned" what they have. In our be er moments, though, we
know that all our gi s--even the spiritual gi s--come through God's generosity. Our voca on
is to invite people, to remind them the ckets aren't for sale. We can only show up and say
thank you. ©Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures From Our Tradition
The confessional is a familiar se ng in literature and drama. Everyone from Doestoevsky and
Shakespeare down the line to Seinfeld has used the sacrament to tragic or comic effect or to
reveal aspects of character otherwise hidden. All of this theater, from world classics to slaps ck, has had a numbing effect on our own expecta ons, and has skewed how the culture
looks at us and our struggle with sin and forgiveness, hope and healing.
Yet the ar sts are on to something. The reconcilia on chapel is a place where hearts are laid
bare, where honesty is the watchword, and people confess their deepest needs. It is also a
place of rebirth, or at least realignment. It is, like the bap smal font, a place where something
dies, and where something else is born. Today, although literature has barely caught up, the
place is usually not the dark and gloomy cabinet of old; rather it is a chapel that speaks of
peace, serenity, and the comfort of a welcome home. People in one parish were astonished
recently to see their children skipping with delight as they le the place of their first confession. We have to wait a bit for world literature to catch up with this reality, but at least we can
experience the joy of penance, the thrill of a new beginning, the assurance of God's love.

YEAR OF SACRAMENTS
ONE WORD AT A TIME
Carry
In Mark’s Gospel (2:1–12), four men carry their paralyzed friend
to Jesus. Jesus sees their faith, forgives the man’s sins, and heals
him. This story needs to con nue today. In faith, we carry one
another to Jesus for healing and forgiveness. When we do this,
we acknowledge our fragile human condi on, our need for one
another, and our shared faith that Jesus is our source of healing.
The celebra on of the Anoin ng of the Sick enables us to bring our friends in need
to Jesus. We stand together with them in a communion of suffering and pe on
that becomes a communion of hope. We are never closer to God, Pope Francis connually reminds us, than when we stand close to those who are in special need—
the sick, the poor, and all those who are on the margins of society.
A er Jesus cures the paralyzed man in Mark’s Gospel, his friends say, “We have never seen anything like this!” May these words echo as we journey with the sick and
poor.
