In fact, the holiday got underway on Friday evening 26 September with some very exciting news for the IST community when Mr. Kavanagh’s wife, Ayeza, gave birth to a beautiful little boy who they have named Dilon (the Irish spelling of Dylan). We are all very excited for Mr. Kavanagh and Ayeza as the begin life’s greatest and most fulfilling adventure. Mother and son are both very well. And Mr. Kavanagh is positively glowing! Most members of the IST and Tianjin expatriate community will now have learned of the sad news that REGO has been forced to close its doors to students. This is an incredibly upsetting and distressing event for everyone in the Rego community, and I wish to extend our school’s sympathies and best wishes to all who have been affected. On Wednesday evening many fortunate members of our community witnessed the ‘Birth of the Cool’ here at IST when treated to an evening of jazz music performances from IST students, teachers, and other musicians. It was a wonderful night, and congratulations and thanks go to all of the performers and stagehands, and especially to Ms. Barker who planned and coordinated the evening. Sadly there have been a few tears at IST today and yesterday – not to mention a few shrieks and screams. Yes, it was time for the annual seasonal influenza vaccinations, and it appears that the process of needle insertion does not wholly fascinate everyone in our community! In spite of the obvious trauma, we nevertheless encourage all members of the community to consider receiving the annual influenza vaccination as it not only helps keep you well, but it also reduces the spread of the identified seasonal influenza viruses and the associated possibility of mutation with some of the more sinister strains. All parents should have received an updated Emergency Telephone Tree on Tuesday. Please do check your details again and ensure that everyone in your family is familiar with the protocol and that your tree is close at hand in case a fog day is called. I will be away from school next week while I attend an accreditation visit at an international school in Tokyo. In my absence Mr. Hilleson will be Acting Director. I wish you all a great week ahead. ac Warm regards ol Steve Moody sc ld wor Upcoming World Celebration Dates next week ho Director IST Commemorates the exact date when Spanish explorer Christopher Columbus first set foot in the Americas in 1492, while he was actually attempting to find a western sea route to India. is an Sunday - October 12,2014 Spain Hispanic Day c d re it ed by and T H E Friday 10 October 2014 BLAZE W e e k l y Working Learning Acting TOGETHER IST Library & Information Literacy Center IST Library International Schools Library Week, 17 to 24 October Celebrate our international community of readers with us! ¥ Library Club Assembly – 17 October ¥ Character Dress Up– 17 October ¥ Book Fair – 21 & 22 October Come to the assembly dressed like your favorite character. IST Library Birthday Book Club Happy birthday and thank you to Jun Seo Yu in Kindergarten for his Birthday Book Club donation of Bob Shea’s I Am A Shark. Jun Seo’s donation is the first birthday book club book the library received this school year. Jun Seo is smart with a lively sense of humor. He likes to answer questions and share his thoughts with his friends and classmates. Like all the boys of his age Jun Seo loves dinosaur books and shark books and also favors racing car books. Thank you Jun Seo for your donation and happy belated birthday! The Birthday Book Club is a way of combining a birthday celebration with a donation to the IST Library. It is very easy to join the IST Library Birthday Book Club. For a modest fee of 150RMB, a child can help to build our library collection. With input from the parents, teachers and the birthday child, the IST librarians will select a book to suit his/her interests and reading ability. The child is the first to check out his/her Birthday Book Club book and a commemorative plate is inserted in the book. Elementary students are presented with their book on their class library session closest to their birthday. Secondary students are presented with their book at morning homeroom. To enroll your child in the IST Library Birthday Book Club, please register online via the widget on the right sidebar. http://istianjinelearning.org/library T H E Friday 10 October 2014 BLAZE W Working Learning Acting TOGETHER e e k l y International Schools Library Week 2014 17 October - Character Dress Up Day G1-2 Library Club Assembly 21 - 22 Oct - Beijing Book Fair All week - Daily Drop Everything & Read All week - Panda Book Awards 2014 Official Launch & Quizzes Details on the library blog - http://istianjinelearning.org/library T H E Friday 10 October 2014 BLAZE W e e k l y Working Learning Acting TOGETHER Girls Middle School Soccer Update DOWN BUT NOT OUT On September 23rd the IST youth 13 girls soccer team went to TIS to play a match. We played for 40 minutes and by halftime IST was down 2-0. Although we rallied in the second half with Chae Rin Lim scoring a goal. Unfortunately we could not build on this with TIS finishing the game off with one last goal. The score at the end was 3-1. Overall everyone played very well even though they had substitutes and we didn’t. On Tuesday the 23rd of September the IST U14 girls played a soccer match against TIS. The first goal of the match was scored by TIS, which made our team more determined to score. We were all ecstatic when the first goal of the year was scored against TIS. However, TIS were equally as determined to win and ended up doing so. Even though they won, each member in our group kept their heads held high and showed good sportsmanship. Every member in our team worked very well and in the future with hard work and determination we will be able to beat them. The girls played extremely hard and were tied for the majority of the match with TIS but the final score was 2-4. On Thursday September 25th we played Wellington and tied 1-1. Anna scored a goal in the second half. We were really good at passing to teammates but we need to improve on dribbling the ball and making sure our shots are on target. I think that the IST girls did a great job today.
