GRAPHIC STANDARDS
LOGO i.e. COMPANY EMBLEM
The logo, i.e. the company emblem of the University of Turku,
has to be included in all the materials of each unit. The winged torch symbol is 40% black and the University of Turku
name logo is black.
•
•
•
•
•
•
The logo is used primarily as grey and black on white
background.
you can only use the logo in the form that it is in the
original file: you cannot space, thin, bold or process it in
any way.
You cannot use just the winged torch instead of the logo.
If possible, place the logo in the upper left-hand corner
in the university materials.
Respect the space around the logo! The logo always
needs space around it to calm its environment. Don’t add
other elements to the immediate vicinity of the logo.
Faculty information or the unit name cannot be added
to the context of the logo. The faculty name is clearest
when included in contact information, heading or subheadings etc.
You can download the logo from the website:
www.utu.fi/logo
or from the intranet: intranet.utu.fi/ilme

(name logo)
Winged torch
The winged torch symbol, designed by artist Eric O. W. Ehrström, represents the task and
objectives of the University of
Turku. The feathers symbolise
the versatility of the university’s
branches of science as well as the
geographical orientation from
national to international. The
flames of the torch represent passion for knowledge and the depth
and extent of science.
THE USE OF THE LOGO
Minimum Width
The minimum width of the logo is 30 mm.
Space Around the Logo
The space that is left around the
logo has to be at least as wide as

The Negative Logo
The negative version of the logo is used
only when the logo is placed on a dark
background.
Using the Logo on a Photo or a Coloured Background
There should be enough contrast between the logo and
the background. If the photo is colourful or dark, fade
the top corner of the photo with image processing tools.

TYPOGRAPHY
If Whitney and Minion Pro are not available, use these fonts,
for example, in Word and Powerpoint documents :
Using the established typographies along with the
university logo and colours is essential in creating a
consistent visual identity. The primary typography
for printed materials in the University of Turku is
Whitney Condensed typeface.

WHITNEY CONDENSED
MINION PRO
A clear, versatile and recognisable typeface. Use the
Light font in the main headings and the Bold font
in sub-headings. The Book font is suitable for short
bodies of texts, information boxes and graphs. The
Book font is used in headings only when the text
is placed on a dark background (speech balloons).
Whitney typeface is not used in long bodies of texts.
The Minion Pro typeface fonts are easy and
pleasant to read. Minion Pro is always used in
long bodies of texts. The typeface can occasionally be used in the headings and pull quotes, but
the main typeface for headings in the university
publications is always Whitney (Condensed
Light).

The colour rectangles are used in national and international
student marketing. The use of the rectangles makes the university’s student marketing materials uniform and recognisable.
The rectangles are always the same width, but you can
change the order of the colours and the length of the rectangles.
You can crop, rotate and place the rectangle element in different ways. You
can also change the length of the rectangles and the order of colours in the

the text is placed in the faculty colour.

multi- and crossdisciplinary regional perspective. It offers a new
kind of understanding of the post-enlargement EU based on
the emergence of Baltic Sea Region as a platform of political,
social, and cultural action and cooperation.
Programme incorporates the perspectives of Contemporary History, International Relations, Human and Geography, Nationalism Studies and Cultural Studies. In a genuinely
international classroom, students learn about the multifaceted history of the region, its
vibrant political present, and discuss also the future challenges facing it. Equipped with
in-depth knowledge about political, economic, and cultural developments on national,
regional as well as global levels, BSRS graduates have been employed by a broad variety
of academic, governmental, diplomatic and other institutions and organizations.
Teaching and learning in the Baltic Sea Region Studies Master’s programme is based on
regional approach that complements but also challenges the conventional national and
international perspectives. Combining international relations, history, cultural studies,
human geography and nationalism studies, it’s an inter- and cross-disciplinary endeavor
that strives to create active and innovative environment for studying and learning. We
are encouraging independent thinking, critical debate and intellectual creativity. The
curriculum offers plenty of opportunities for communication among the students and
between them and the teachers. Multinational and multicultural interaction that makes
Baltic Sea Region Studies a truly unique academic experience!
Using the Photos
When you are using the photos, select one or a couple of high-quality photos and give them a lot of space in the layout. Several small
photos can make the layout look confusing and disorderly. Carefully
considered use of masked and black-and-white photos makes the
look interesting and light.
The layout, cropping and quality of the photos create an atmosphere
– therefore you should choose the images carefully. You don’t have
to illustrate the whole text, just choose a photo that fits the topic and
is of high-quality.
If you have only low-quality photos of the topic, give them a small
role in the layout and allow more space for technically superior photos in the illustration.
