Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint Luke Church, Whitestone, New York 12 October 2014 From the Desk of the Pastor -The oils used for the celebration of the Sacraments of initiation, holy orders and the anointing of the sick according to an ancient tradition are reverently reserved in a special place in the church. (Book of Blessing - Introduction) As part of the First Anniversary Mass of Dedication of the church a special ritual for the Blessing of the newly installed Repository for Holy Oils will take place. This repository - also known as an Ambry, is located on the wall to the right of the statue of the Blessed Mother. The ambry consists of three glass containers, each one holding a vessel of holy oil - the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick and one for Holy Chrism. Each repository, while similar in form, will vary slightly to indicate the oil stored in it: The Oil of the Sick: has a top of green colored glass indicating the hope and comfort given to the sick who will be anointed; the front panel has been decorated with an olive branch symbol of healing and strength; The Oil of Catechumens: has a purple glass top indicating the process of conversion and penitence catechumens must undergo in preparation for the life giving waters of their baptism; The Sacred Chrism: has a repository topped with gold glass symbolic of Christ from which chrism gets its name. Used in the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Orders and in the anointing of the walls of a church and of the altar, the front panel bears a symbol of the power of the Holy Spirit that comes upon all anointed by Sacred Chrism. Each repository rests on a wood and granite base the front of which bears the sign of the holy cross which is also seen on the base of the dedication candles placed throughout the church marking the place where the walls were anointed with Chrism as part of the dedication ceremony. Each year the Bishop blesses the oils and consecrates the Chrism at the celebration of the Chrism Mass held at the cathedral church of the diocese on Holy Thursday morning or at some other day during Holy Week. The oils blessed and Chrism consecrated are then sent to all the parishes of the diocese for their use in the year to come. The old oils are changed each year and replaced by the newly blessed oils. The repository designed for our church truly provides a worthy, beautiful and reverent place for the reservation of the holy oils. Thank you to Mrs. Martha McLoughlin who donated the repository and vessels in memory of her husband Michael. Once again, please join us for the First Anniversary Mass of Dedication on Monday, October 20, 2014 at 12 noon. A light reception will follow in the Pastoral Center. God bless! LUKE SCHOOL WHERE FAITH AND KNOWLEDGE MEET 718-746-3833 www.slswhitestone.org Celebrating 104 Years of Excellence in Catholic Education 1910—2015 The second grade students in Mrs. Vella’s class gather in prayer with Fr. Michael Bruno during one of his weekly classroom visits. The class has been learning about the beginnings of the church and the meaning of Pentecost. Fr. Bruno asked the children to recount the events of the first Pentecost and how it affected the apostles. The students have come to recognize that they too are disciples of Jesus and have the responsibility to follow Jesus’ teachings. This year the children will be preparing for the sacraments of Penance and First Eucharist. The second grade students, their teachers, and parents will be participating in several meetings and a retreat day which are included in the parish First Sacraments’ Program. Page 13 Amazing Apples! It’s that time of year again…fall has arrived! What’s better than a crisp, juicy, ripe, round apple? Mrs. Molen’s Kindergarten class learned all about apples. We read books that gave us information about apples. The children used a hand lens to take a closer look at the inside of an apple. Next, we made an apple using a paper plate and labeled its parts. The children also drew pictures depicting the life cycle of an apple. We looked at what an apple tree looks like through the four seasons. Lastly, the children tasted applesauce and made a graph of our preferences. Shiny and sweet and simple to eat. Crunch, crunch, crunch!
