Did you know Chem-Dry was GREEN before it was “cool” to be green? The “Chem” in Chem-Dry actually stands for Chemistry, not Chemicals. It’s all about the carbonation and utilizing thousands of bubbles to lift soils to the surface. Did you know Chem-Dry is a World-Wide company that has been around for over 35 years? Chem-Dry is actually the world’s largest carpet & upholstery cleaning service. Karen shared “We love being a part of something so big, yet at the same time still being able to connect, network, and give back on a daily basis in a smaller town!” The Oregon Prosperity Project Minimum Wage in Oregon: Which Oregonians are Impacted by Increases in the Minimum Wage? Jill Hamm - KAJO/KLDR | Karen & Lance Colburn - K&L Chem-Dry | Frankie Craig - The Daily Courier Special thanks to these individuals who are dedicated to promoting and networking their business every week. 1.7 million people, about 5.5% of workers make minimum wage and of those, more than half are tipped employees - meaning that they often make far more than minimum wage. Second, people often assume that many minimum wage workers are full-time employees. That’s wrong. In Oregon, only 1.4% of full-time hourly workers make minimum wage. And across the U.S., only 2% of full-time hourly workers make minimum wage, while 10% of part-time hourly workers make the minimum wage. Just last January, Oregon’s minimum wage rose to $9.10 an hour, and that might just be the beginning. So what’s that mean to you? After all, you don’t work for minimum wage. When it comes to being the breadwinner, Well, maybe it means a lot. the vast majority of minimum wage workDespite the fact that Oregon now has the ers do not have families to support. In 80% second highest minimum wage in the of U.S. households with children, and in entire nation (just behind Washington which someone earns minimum wage, State at $9.32) Oregon policymakers are that job accounts for less than 20% of total household income. That means that in most talking about raising it even higher. You might be surprised to find out how of those households, the minimum wage further increases will affect Oregon job is supplementing income earned from higher paying jobs. workers and businesses. Out of Oregon’s workforce of over service industry, where, according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, they stay at a job for a median of only 2.3 years. This is half as long as the overall median job tenure of 4.6 years. With such a short tenure, food service industry jobs can be the precursor to better, higher-paying jobs that could only be obtained after a worker has gained experience. So what does this total up to? A higher minimum wage means that workers cost more and businesses may not be able to hire as many employees, particularly those who are inexperienced and new to the workforce the very people that really need that first job. Let’s look at some facts. 3 Member Focus Anita Crew Massage Therapy After being in the dental field as a Dental Assistant for 28 years, I decided it was time to do something new. In 2007 I went back to school at RCC to become a Massage Therapist. It was the best decision I could have made for a career. Now, 6 years later, I am able to work at a job I love and help people feel better in the process. A year after getting licensed and set up for business in The Health Oasis building downtown at H and 5th, someone suggested I join the Chamber of Commerce so I could meet fellow business owners and network. I joined in 2009 and was amazed at the support and friendship I found at the Greeters meetings. I still love going to the meetings on Wednesday mornings and sharing ideas about business, referrals and cultivating great relationships in the process. Through it all my husband, Brad and my two boys were supportive and of course always willing to have me “practice” massage on them. Brad built me a wonderful website which gives me a great on-line presence for today’s ever changing market. 4 To find out more about me, the types of massage I offer and how massage can benefit your life, please visit my website at www. massagegrantspass.com. Heartlanddancestudio.com Category: Dance/Classes/Entertainment Heartland Dance was founded in 1977 with the mission to offer community members of all ages and abilities the opportunity to experience the joy and benefits of dance in an atmosphere of kindness and discipline. Our instructors emphasize proper dance training and technique in a nurturing environment. We have served over 3,000 students over the years, and our current enrollment has grown to over 80. We have outgrown the space we have used for 20 years, and are forced to turn students away every year because we just can’t fit any more in!
