The Pinion Rotary Club of Woy Woy 14th October 2014 Chit Chat Night and Melbourne Cup Ticket Stapling Don’t forget to bring your staplers!!! Tonight…. Grace: Tony Cameron Toast: John Regan Presidents Report Mea culpa, Maxima Mea culpa. In my introductory remarks at the last meeting on the 7th of October, I welcomed back a number of members and introduced prospective members. However, I neglected to welcome back Maggie Payne after her month long trip to China. How could I have been so remiss, Maggie please accept my apologies. Geoffrey Potter our guest speaker gave us a wonderful insight into the history of the Paddle Steamer “Maitland”, it’s sinking, and the rescue that followed. It reminds us just how far we have come from a world with no radio, radar, telephones and especially smart phone and distress bacons. We are not going to have a Christmas Trailer raffle this year! We couldn’t muster the members, the resources or the time to arrange it successfully. Therefore, it was decided by the clubs past organisers, with the Presidents approval, that a botched job was not an option, so this year it will be dropped from the calendar. Jayne, John Perks and I went along to the opening of the 100-year celebration of Umina on Thursday evening and Jayne went to represent me at the Terrigal book fare on Saturday, as I was ill once again!!! Rotary Grace O Lord, Thou giver of all Good, We thank Thee for our daily food, May Rotary friends & Rotary ways, Help us to serve Thee all our days. The Hat Day at Café DMR was a great success my thanks to Mark, Di and Bobby for their organisation no the day. To members and friends for turning up, including Chris Holstein MP and Councillor Bob Ward, for their support on the day. NB: Please remember that the next Tuesdays meeting is going to be in part dedicated to stapling Melbourne Cup tickets, so please bring along your staplers. Yours in Rotary, President Peter Last Meeting, our Guest was Geoffrey Potter giving us insight into his book “Wreck of the Maitland Geoffrey will talk about his book "Wreck of the Maitland". A handsome vessel, the Maitland was 240 feet (73 metres) and weighed 880 tons, with maple fittings ''polished to glossy brightness'' and seats ''cushioned with horsehair''. On Thursday, May 5, it was on its routine run from Sydney to Newcastle loaded with cargo and 34 passengers when it ran into a southerly gale stirring up mountainous seas. Captain Richard James Skinner, from London, tried to turn the vessel into Broken Bay but the Maitland drifted helplessly and was flung aground at Boat Harbour, later renamed Maitland Bay, about 5am the next morning. The vessel struck bow first, then swung around until it was split into two sections 60 metres from the headland. One passenger, John Russell jnr, was successful in getting a line ashore with the help of several crew members. Hailed the "Hero of the Maitland", he was given a mayoral reception and testimonial dinner at Newcastle, though little is known of his later life. Joanna McNeil, a passenger, and her daughters Jane and Marion died in the wreck, trapped in the front of the vessel. One daughter is said to have stripped off her heavy dress in an attempt to maximise her chances of swimming ashore. The baby who was separated from her mother was cared for aboard by the captain and boatswain, who called her their mascot. She was later christened Anita Daisy Mascotte Hammond and grew up in Canada. When she died in 1988 her ashes were scattered at the wreck site. A stewardess, Kate Fitton, calmly got the passengers into their lifebelts but when her turn came to go, she was swept from the bosun's chair into the surf. 2 The Rotary Club of Woy Woy Inc. 14th October 2014 We’ll be sad if we don’t see you at the next meeting. At the International Convention held in Atlanta, GA in 1917 Arch Klumph the 6th president of RI suggested Rotary should establish an endowment to do good in the world. To that end, the $26.50 left over from the convention was donated for that purpose. In 2014 the fund has come along way an to ensure the future of the fund, the Foundation has set a goal of $1 billion in Endowment Fund assets and gift commitments by 2025. HOW DOES THE ENDOWMENT FUND WORK? A portion of available earnings from our Endowment Fund supplements Foundation activities and helps strengthen our future commitments to benefit current and future Foundation grants and programs. To help keep the foundation strong into the future your gift to the endowment fund can be made in various way.
