Food and Packaging go together and helps in boosting exports for
the country
Pakistan is an agricultural country and we are self-sufficient in most of the food items but
unfortunately we cannot export our finished commodities in the world market but export in raw form.
Beside other factors, the main reason is lack of packaging knowledge. We became world no. 4 milk
producing country with 34 billion liters but our export in this field is negligible. There are several
products we can export which is made from milk still we cannot even think of getting nearer to other
large milk producing countries. The milk made products are very beautifully packed and come from
all over the world like Denmark, New Zealand, Australia even though these countries are far behind
in production of milk compared to Pakistan. India, USA and Russia are at the top in the race
followed by Pakistan. We can become no. 1 milk producing country if we start using the latest
equipments and technology and work scientifically and systematically. Our policy makers should
come forward and formulate a meaningful policy in this respect which is how we can earn foreign
exchange many times more than the textile sector.
According to Wikipedia, Amul is the largest food brand in India and world's Largest Pouched
Milk Brand with an annual turnover of US $3200 million (2012–13). Currently Unions making up
GCMMF have 13.10 million producer members with milk collection average of 10.93 million liters
per day. Besides India, Amul has entered overseas markets such as Mauritius, UAE, USA,
Bangladesh, Australia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong and a few South African countries. Its bid to
enter Japanese market in 1994 did not succeed, but now it has fresh plans entering the Japanese
markets. Other potential markets being considered include Sri Lanka.
We can also earn millions of dollars in foreign exchange if proper processing and packaging is
followed and latest marketing strategy is adopted to explore export potentials. We mustn’t neglect
the packaging sector and continuously provide feedback to them to help the country in earning
foreign exchange – possibly the best way to get rid of huge deficit.
Beside milk, we have live stock and according to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nawaz of University of
Veterinary and Animal Sciences
(UVAS), 4.2 million tons of meat can be made available if we can replace run down animals with
the healthy ones. Added to this, if we can introduce processing and packaging as per the
international standards, we will be able to earn more foreign exchange from meat and beef as well.
We have best quality fruits but again we are not meeting the world standards in packaging and
thus cannot earn foreign exchange the way we should. We export fruit mostly in raw shape as world
class processing facilities are almost non-existent to fetch business from international market. We
have “A” class mangoes that have no match but our exports of pulp, juices, etc. is negligible
compared to export of raw mangoes. We have Kino, Oranges, Dates and many other kinds of fruits
that are surplus from our needs but we don’t possess the required capabilities to separately
process them into various forms and thus have no choice but to export it in raw shape. Other
countries are processing our fruit exports in different forms and making good money on it. We have
let this opportunity go waste and have never put efforts to acquire facilities that would help in
earning foreign exchange.
Recently an investment of 92 million Euros by Tetra pack to produce eight billion packages can
be doubled when the demand exists. This is a potentially growing industry yielding about 15%
increase every year.
We understand that our Government has been getting grants for the establishment of Pakistan
Packaging Institute; the land has been acquired and feasibility study completed, still there are no
indications of further progress in this direction which is hurting the country’s interest. There is dire
need to put the industry on the right track. The Grant given to us need to be utilized properly before
it gets scrapped. We, therefore, strongly propose that Packaging industry should also be given
representation in TDAP, in agricultural and food/fruit research institutions so that experts in this
industry may suggest better ideas for boosting export through better and convenient packaging.

Gráfica Rex expands capacity with second
KBA Rapida 105
As a stable and wellstructured firm it was time
for Gráfica Rex to update its
production facilities. In 2009
the firm acquired its first
five-colour offset press plus
coater and in 2011 it was
time for further new
investments. It was precisely
then when the company
already had the ISO 9001
certification and was ready
for a big jump that the
company
started
a
partnership with KBA.
According to Lermen
other presses from different
manufacturers
were
evaluated before the
decision was made.
José Luiz Lermen:
“At the time KBA had
implemented a new
structure in Brazil and
that
was
very
important for our
choice. Moreover, the
technology of the
Rapida
105
is
outstanding. Our makeready
times fell from an hour and a
half to thirty minutes. This is
very significant as any time
when we were not printing
was lost money and
profitability. With the Rapida
105 we stood at the frontline
of the graphic arts industry. It
is very versatile and has
brought us much joy. A very
important detail is that I can
print in one colour, bicolour,
three colours, four colours
etc., as it's easy to disengage
the inking units. When I don't
use a printing unit, there is no
expense.”

Xeikon launches the Web
Varnishing Module
Xeikon has expanded the
inline finishing options
available for its digital
presses with the development
of the Web Varnishing
Module,
an
extremely
versatile unit that can apply
UV or aqueous varnish on
one side of a wide range of
substrates. These substrates
include self-adhesive label
materials, coated papers,
unsupported films and coated
paper board. This new and
compact unit will have its
worldwide launch on the
company's booth 6135 at
Labelexpo Americas 2014
and will be commercially
available from early 2015.
"The label and folding
carton industries employ a
wide range of varnishes, from
matt to super gloss, and these
can have a huge impact on the
appearance, feel and quality
of the final printed product,"
says Filip Weymans, Director
- Business Development and
Marketing,
Labels
and
Packaging, Xeikon.
One of the big advantages
of the new inline module is
that the operator can see the
results immediately and can
make any corrections, if
required, in order to achieve
the desired effect. This
eliminates the high expense
and job delays when
varnishing is done off-line
and the entire job has to be
reprinted if the end result is
not acceptable.
The web varnishing
module runs inline with the
Xeikon 3000 Series of presses
(at full press speeds) and the
print roller can be changed
easily to match the repeat or
width of the job being printed.
