INTRODUCTION
India s earthmoving and construction equipment (ECE) industry has enjoyed
strong growth over the last ten years as a result of rapid economic
development in the country. India s need for infrastructure development is
also well supported by the Government s intention as outlined in the 12th
Five Year Plan (FYP). Five sectors account for more than 80 percent of total
planned spending: electricity, telecom, roads and bridges, irrigation, and
railways, including mass rapid transit systems.
Infrastructure growth holds the key to the industry realizing its potential in
India. In the 12th Five Year Plan, the government has earmarked
approximately US$1 trillion for infrastructure investment. Consequently,
infrastructure spending is expected to grow from 7.2 percent of GDP in 2012
to 9 percent by 2017. This is likely to spur the demand for construction
equipment, and if the industry s full potential is realized, the result could be a
US$16 billion to US$21 billion industry by 2020.
The Government has kicked off several initiatives to develop smart cities,
airports & highways and announced big energy investments along with the
promise to decontrol diesel in a year. The infrastructure development, which
has suffered due to slow approvals in the past, was a key plank of the budget.
A huge investment of Rs 37,880 crore (including Rs 3,000 crore for North East)
is proposed for NHAI and state roads along with measures to reduce maze of
clearances as the Government intends to construct national highways of
8,500km. The Government intends to set up the National Industrial Corridor Authority, with a view
to give impetus to transport connectivity which will lead to India s growth in manufacturing and
urbanization. Improving supply chain for faster transport of goods to various cities would be done
by working on select expressways along with development of industrial corridor. NHAI will be
required to set aside Rs 500 crore for project preparation of the same. Rs 14,389 crore has been
provided for Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojna (PMGSY).
