The Buzz
Temperatures are dropping and the days are officially getting
shorter — Fall is here. Although the days of boot camps in the park
and hiking under the summer sun are over, it doesn’t have to be all
doom and gloom. We have plenty of activities planned to keep your
mind off of the fact that you have to trade in your sandals for rain
boots.

Member in Motion: Ray Lemke
The sun was shining, the beer was flowing and spirits were high at the
second annual DAC Open Golf Tournament. However, DAC member Ray
Lemke had serious business to attend to – defending his title as DAC Open
Champion. With 38 players, it was no easy task but Ray and his partner
Steve Harris hung on to the lead and clinched the win by three strokes.
What’s your background?
I was born in Coos Bay, Oregon. I attended Marshfield High School,
where I played basketball and baseball for the Pirates. After graduating,
I spent two years at Southwestern Oregon Communit y College while
playing basketball and baseball. Before graduating from the Universit y
of Oregon with a Bachelors in Business Administration, I married
Sissel Opsal. We have two daughters, Kari Lynn Burger and Sonja
Weissenfels, and five grandchildren.
I’ve worked for New York Life Insurance Company for 36 years in
Eugene, and I’m a huge Universit y of Oregon fan – football season
ticket holder since 1979.
How long have you been golfing?
As a child, I rode my bike 5 miles to pick up range balls after 5:00 for
$5.00. I would occasionally play golf or caddie for the good golfers. In
the 70s I started playing golf on a weekly basis at the various courses
around Eugene & Oregon. Now I play 1-2 times a week, year-round –
weather permitting, of course – and I have a 10.6 handicap.
How do you know your golf partner, Steve?
I was a high school basketball official in the Eugene Officials
Association for 15 years as well a college official for 10 years. I met Steve
Harris when he was a young upcoming official & he later became one of
my good clients.
How does it feel to be the back-to-back champion of the DAC open?
It’s always great to win & to do it back-to-back was exciting. (Not
expected though!)
What other activities do you do?
I’m usually at the DAC around 6:30 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. I helped start
the Noon Hoops basketball at DAC in 1985, but don’t play anymore. I
do, however, play various sports with my grand kids.
I’m also in several fantasy football & baseball leagues. I’ve been the
commissioner of a Nationwide Strat-O-Matic Baseball computer league
for 35 years!
What does the DAC community mean to you?
It’s a special place and I’ve been here almost since the beginning. My
wife and I really enjoy going to the Ax Billy Grill Sports Bar after an
Oregon Football game to celebrate with everyone.
What is your favorite aspect of the DAC?
It offers all the different activities that I like in one place – machines,
swimming, stretching, weights. I even tried some of the dance (western
Swing) classes with my wife but two left feet made it the wild swing. Oh
well, I tried.
Thanks to Ray Lemke for taking the time to share his story with us.

Turkish Get-Up
Trevor Hoke, DAC personal trainer, ext. 437
The Turkish Get-up (TGU) is an old-time, strength and mobilit y
exercise that has been brought back and popularized in recent
years. There are a multitude of benefits to the TGU, but a few
very important ones are:
Cocktail of the Month
1. Single leg strength and stabilit y
2. Shoulder stabilit y and mobilit y
3. Balance training through the visual, vestibular, and
proprioceptive systems
HOT BOURBON CIDER
Ingredients:
• 1.5 oz. Bourbon
• .5 oz. Fresh Lemon Juice
• I/2 of Hot apple cider packet
• 4-5 ozs. hot water
• 1 teaspoon of honey
• Cinnamon stick garnish
One of the most important aspects of the TGU is controlling
the weight at every position. If you move too quickly, a lot of the
benefits are lost and the weight is too heavy to reap the benefits.
Patience is key. When performed correctly, the TGU looks like
a beautiful, powerful f low. With something to offer everyone,
of any abilit y, the Turkish Get-up might be the best exercise out
there you are not doing.
Directions:
In a coffee cup add bourbon, fresh lemon juice, ½
an apple cider packet and hot water. Stir and mix
in honey to desired sweetness add a cinnamon stick
for garnish.
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Start on one side with both hands on the kettlebell.
2. Roll to back and set your arms and legs.
3. Bend your leg, planting your foot on the f loor.
4. Press the kettlebell straight up and roll to elbow.
5. Press up to hand.

6. Sweep your leg under, resting on your knee.
7. Straighten up to a half-kneeling.
8. Come all the way up.
After each of the steps are completed from the ground to
standing, reverse order all the way back to the ground. Then,
switch and perform the Turkish get-up on the other side. Repeat
2-3 times on each side.
