The Franklin Institute will be closed April 23, 2015 for The Franklin Institute Awards. 5 October 4, 2014–April 12, 2015 Explore the intricate biology, zoology, and physiology of the world’s most spectacular creatures—large and small! Your students will gain a deeper understanding of the animal kingdom through anatomy. See how intricate the blood vessels of animals are, what the muscular system and various organs of different animals look like, and how they compare to other animals, including humans. Connect concepts learned in class to the real world and deepen your students’ knowledge of animal structure and function. 6 Get under nature’s skin. 7 February 7–September 6, 2015 Explore the intersection of engineering and art! See over 70 one-of-a-kind LEGO® brick sculptures created by renowned artist Nathan Sawaya. Your endeavoring engineers are sure to be inspired by these whimsical and awe-inspiring creations. New Exhibit! Educator Guide available online at fi.edu/educator-guides 8 Your Brain Think about how you think. Your brain is always changing. Your students will find out how and why as they explore The Franklin Institute’s newest—and largest—exhibit. Fire a model neuron to see how brain cells use chemical and electrical signals to communicate at incredible speeds. Walk into a street scene filled with scenarios from everyday life. Will your brain process what it sees correctly? Or is the world we’ve created possibly an illusion? The exhibit features immersive experiences and content that shows how the brain processes information from sensory receptors. A visit to Your Brain is sure to both please your students and meet your curriculum standards. 9 Changing Earth AMAZING MACHINE Our restless Earth is always changing. Tectonic plates drift, the crust quakes, and volcanoes erupt. Air pressure falls, storms form, and precipitation results. As they crawl through a magma tube, construct an earthquakeresistant structure, and forecast the local weather, your students will begin to understand the interconnected systems of earth science. Explore the science and art of machines, from simplest to most complex. Start with simple machines, add cams and linkages, and eventually you’ve engineered a new invention, like the many on display. Some of the machines serve practical purposes while others are entirely whimsical. A highlight is the Maillardet Automaton—a truly amazing machine that inspired the award-winning children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret and film Hugo. Electricity SPORTS CHALLENGE Think globally! Learn locally! Spark your curiosity about the wonders of electricity! 10 From static to current, the electricity flows in this exhibit! Use your body to complete the circuit and discover how series and parallel circuits regulate the flow of electrons along a conductor. Insulate yourself from the effects of the Van de Graaff generator. Try to time your visit to this exhibit for the top of the hour so that you witness the explosive release of static electricity from the Tesla Coil mounted overhead. It’s electrifying! Find out what’s happening inside the machine! Catch a wave, pitch a curveball, and tackle physical science! This high-energy, action-packed exhibit challenges students to learn the physics, biomechanics, and materials science associated with their favorite sports. Surfing, rock-climbing, and ice-skating may all seem equally difficult, but each 11 involves different balancing techniques. Your pitching aces may be surprised to find that the shape of the ball influences its aerodynamics. Your students will leave with a new appreciation for the role science plays in their home runs, touchdowns, and perfect scores. the FRANKLIN AIR SHOW Feel the forces of flight and prepare for takeoff! The Franklin Air Show is all about airflow and learning how to control it for flight. Stand in front of a giant fan while wearing foam “wings” on your arms and feel the lift force. Try flying a kite like the Wright Brothers did to see how challenging it can be to balance the forces. Make a paper whirligig and watch it rise on an updraft. See how areas of high and low air pressure can “catch” a ball and make it float. You’ll have to drag your students away! Look to the sky and discover the wonders of outer space! SIR ISAAC’S LOFT The Giant Heart: A Healthy Interactive Experience Play with physics and let Newton’s Laws of Motion influence the fun! 12 Space Command & The Joel N. Bloom Observatory What if Sir Isaac Newton could design a playground? This exhibit is what it might look like. Falling objects, chain reactions, and optical illusions bring Newton’s laws to life in playful ways. Pulleys, prisms, and pendulums demonstrate classic physical principles that every student needs to know. A highlight of the exhibit is Newton’s Dream, a kinetic sculpture that shows the transfer of energy within a system as balls travel along tracks to power a playful series of events. Exploration and imagination intersect in the Space Command exhibit. The phases of the Moon come into focus as students learn about Earth’s only natural satellite. Construct a rover and see how it fares on a rocky terrain. Spin a ball into the Gravity Well and see centripetal force in action. Visit the rooftop Observatory for a look through our telescopes. Weather permitting, visit the rooftop Observatory for a look through our telescopes. On a clear day, students may be able to see sun spots, solar flares, and, at times, the Moon! Explore the “heart” of The Franklin Institute! For more than half a century, a walk through the Giant Heart has been a rite of passage for schoolchildren in Philadelphia. No field trip to The Franklin Institute would 13 be complete without circulating through the human body’s cardio-pulmonary system. Students can get their own heart pumping at the Exercise Opera where bicycles power an animated opera. They can also learn to make good choices at the vending machine, where heart health is always on the menu. TRAIN FACTORY Put some steam in your STEM! How often do your students get the chance to climb aboard a 350-ton Baldwin steam locomotive? It’s an authentic learning opportunity for exploring physical science concepts like energy, pressure, friction, and magnetic force. Look for simple machines in the workings of the complex design of the steam locomotive. With propulsion provided by steam, the states of matter are also on vivid display. “ I appreciate the Institute’s flexibility in accommodating the size of our group (and the ability to work with us to adjust our itinerary on the fly to ensure the best possible experience for my students). Well done!” – 6th Grade Teacher, Newark Charter School (Newark, DE) KIDSCIENCE Let water and wind supply the power for your learning adventure! 14 The Island of The Elements awaits our youngest visitors. Designed especially for children in Grades PreK–2, students explore scientific principles of air, water, earth, and light in a thematically-designed island environment. Imagination runs wild as students climb to the top of a lighthouse, take the helm of a sailing ship, and work to keep the giant waterwheel turning—discovering science along the way. 15 The hands-on workshop was spectacular and our leader was wonderful. Many of the students said he was their favorite part of the trip!” – 5th Grade Teacher, Woodbury Heights Elementary School (Woodbury Heights, NJ) PreK-Grade 1: 30 minutes | $3.50 per student 20 students maximum per workshop Grades 2–12: 45 minutes | $5.00 per student 60 students maximum per workshop Crazy Ball Maze Stream Table: Observing Change Volcanoville: Predicting Eruptions Grades 2–8 | Available Tuesday and Thursday Grades 5–12 | Available Monday, Wednesday, Friday Rolling, spinning, and bouncing are just a few ways to see kinetic energy in play.
