October from 14h00 to 17h00 in room 47 (Mrs Hay’s classroom). Please support this worthy cause.
Academic matters
I would like to apologise for the erratic email distribution of the report cards at the end of last term. Besides being
frustrating, a delay in receiving the report card limits the useful conversation that parents and scholars should have about
progress thus far in the year as well as setting goals for the end of year examinations. It would appear that the difficulty
was with the email server. I have put extra checks in place that we will use in future to avoid a repeat of the problem.

Learning curve
Two most unlikely pieces of advice to succeed:
1. Give up: When a task or goal seems too big or too scary that fear is holding you back from even trying – give
up. Acknowledge that you are fearful and dreading the task. Then simply start doing little manageable bits of the task
anyway. This is how you give up the fear and start seeing the task as possible.
2. Procrastinate: When you have an important piece of work to do and you keep finding reasons not to get to the work,
just procrastinate. Do other less important tasks. This is a mental trick to make your mind regard other tasks as more
important. Then simply transition into the bigger task and away you go.

ROUND SQUARE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

The International Round Square conference was
held at the Sanskaar Valley School in the Bhopal
Valley in India. The theme of the conference; “We
may not have it all together, but together we have it
all” reinforced the idea of learning to live together
in peace and harmony through the process of
mutual respect, compassion, social responsibility
and tolerance of diversity.
The delegates were treated to a showcase of India
in the form of dance and culture. Guest speakers
were passionate and thought provoking.
Community service took most delegates out of their
comfort zone and the adventure activities tested
their skills and endurance. Penryn College is
privileged to belong to such a global organization.

The IT Showcase is in its fourth year. The competition was adjudicated by judges from the University of Witwatersrand,
University of Johannesburg and University of Pretoria.
The IT Showcase creates a platform for South African grade 12 IT students to gain exposure for their matric IT projects
which are of an exceptional standard. The IT Showcase creates a meeting place between grade 12 IT students,
businesses and tertiary institutions. Our vision is to create a climate where we recognise and value the projects
produced by grade 12 IT students country-wide. We aim to create visibility and appreciation of the skills available in
our country in order to promote and develop a rich culture of problem solving with respect to technology.
Daniel came SECOND!! He has won
a full bursary from Rhodes University
for first year and an iPad Air.
Ben came third overall and also won the
best documentation. For his third place he
won an iPad mini and for the best
documentation an external hard drive.

Chaplain’s chat
Hello Penryn family
Life with Jesus offers an opportunity to grow into all that we were created to be. As Christians we have never arrived but
are always on a journey. Someone once said, ‘Jesus loves us the way we are’, then added ‘He loves us to much to leave us
that way’. This journey with Jesus is one of continual challenge and growth. Let us look at Jesus’ interactions with three
people and then consider Jesus interactions with us.
Jesus talks to Mary and says to her – John 20 17, “Do not hold on to me,”. Mary’s growth requires letting go of Jesus.
Thomas on the other had is invited by Jesus, John 20.27 “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put
it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” For Thomas to grow He needs to touch and to feel, to hold on. Peter on the
other hand is asked 3 times do you love me. John 21.17 “Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you
love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.”. When I thought
of this interaction I wondered if Jesus needed to hear what Peter said or if Peter needed to hear what he was saying. Peter
needed to remind Himself of His deep and undeniable love for Jesus.
I invite you to take time now and think for a while about what Jesus would be saying to you, remembering that Jesus loves
you the way you are but loves you too much to leave you that way.
God bless you as you grapple with how Jesus is calling you to grow into all that you were created to be.

The Shaun Pollock Festival held at Northwood high school in KZN during the holidays was a wonderful experience for our
u14 boys cricket team. Thank you to Mr Booysen who managed and chaperoned the team. Results will be circulated next
week.
Mr Olivier is away climbing Kilamanjaro and will return on Saturday 18 October. We wish him the best of luck in the
climb and look forward to hearing about his adventures.
