Great Ideas In Arts
Education Start Here
Welcome to Seymour’s 2015 arts education program.
This year’s program takes an important leap forward
in two areas:
Firstly we welcome Sport for Jove as our 2015
resident arts education company. Inside this brochure
you will discover Sport for Jove’s most extensive
program of performances and symposiums to date,
designed to connect students with outstanding
productions and workshops, tailored to meet
syllabus objectives.
Secondly, I’m very proud that as part of The University
of Sydney, Seymour’s arts education program
includes performances that investigate a range of
contemporary issues, featuring post-show workshops
and discussions with leading University academics:
What is the Matter with Mary Jane? has become
a classic play text, tackling the complex issues
surrounding young people battling eating disorders.
Experts from the University of Sydney’s Charles
Perkins Centre join us to present this work, providing
a range of quality add-on workshops to understand
more about this complex disease.
Grounded is presented in partnership with the
United States Studies Centre and investigates the
impact on the personal lives of fighter pilots engaged
in drone warfare. This play has achieved considerable
international success and will stimulate great
discussion for students of politics, modern history
and performance.
In 2015, Seymour’s arts education program
adds significant value to not only the study of the
creative arts but to a wide range of subject areas.
In this brochure you will discover opportunities for
your students to learn through the arts about the
experience of young refugees, about the great
depression in America and, for primary students,
have the opportunity to experience Shakespeare
for the first time.
I look forward to seeing you and your students
here in 2015.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream
By William Shakespeare
“…the iron tongue of midnight hath told twelve…
’tis almost fairy time…”
Sport for Jove’s 100 minute A Midsummer Night’s Dream
plunges students into the heat of the shortest night of the
year, young lovers and work-a-day dreamers plunge into
a world between sleep and waking, where “everything
seems double”.
One of Shakespeare’s truly essential works, ‘Dream’, like
every fairy-story, warns us that family, love and friendship
are fragile – when parents are selfish, their children break
the rules; when love rears its head, friendships are forgotten;
and that’s just the mortal world. The Fairy Kingdom’s war
over a mortal child has turned the entire “mazed world”
upside down.

CDP PRESENTS TWO MAGICAL SHOWS
PRIMARY
May Gibbs’ quintessentially Australian classics have
fascinated and delighted generations of children and families,
introducing them to the wonder and magic of the Australian
bush. In this new adaptation for children aged 5–10 and their
families, these iconic tales of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie
come alive on stage for contemporary audiences.
The gumnut babies are on a mission to see a human – but
only in the distance! On their journey to the big city they
meet friends and foes including Professor Kookaburra, Mrs
Fantail, Mr Lizard, Mr Frog, Mrs Snake, Mr Possum and, of
course, Little Ragged Blossom.
Can Snugglepot lead the way? Can Cuddlepie hold his
nerve? Can they avoid falling victim to the Big Bad Banksia
Man? These beloved characters come to life on stage as this
funny, enchanting production introduces today’s children to
the wonderful world of May Gibbs.

They’re back! Andy and Terry’s Treehouse is now 52 storeys
tall, with yet more fantastic inventions: a watermelon smashing
room, a chainsaw-juggling level, a rocket powered carrot
launcher, and even a Ninja Snail Training Academy.
Today is a special day. It’s Andy’s birthday, but Terry has
forgotten! To make matters worse Mr Big Nose has mysteriously
disappeared, and to top it all off, Jill has fallen into a deep sleep
and they just can’t wake her up. So Andy and Terry set off on a
crazy adventure tackling a world of startling obstacles including
a hungry caterpillar, an angry vegetable kingdom, and a 100
year ninja-snail epic voyage. Will they solve the mysteries and
survive the dangers that test even their ingenuity?
Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton’s latest bestseller comes to
life on the stage as the team behind the hit adaptations of The
13-Storey Treehouse and The 26-Storey Treehouse return with
this imaginative and engaging play. So what are you waiting for?

She’s an F16 fighter pilot; a rock star of the great big blue

career in the sky is over. Now, she sits in an air-conditioned

The Merchant Of Venice
By William Shakespeare, Directed by Richard Cottrell
“…a pound of flesh…nearest his heart…
so says the bond…”
The Merchant is a story Shakespeare couldn’t resist…
an unfathomable sadness in a man’s heart…the mysterious
terrors of the ocean…hate crime and religious intolerance…
our willingness to gamble with our lives…things that still
hurt and hinder us to this day in our struggle to know the
difference between mercy and justice.
Some of Shakespeare’s most extraordinary characters people
this play. Portia, the brilliant young woman who dresses as
a man to save the Merchant’s life and bears witness to an
untold passion between Antonio and her husband, Bassanio.
And at the centre of them all in the court of Venice stands a
Jewish moneylender, Shylock, demanding a pound of flesh
from a man who is willing to have his heart torn out of his
body as a gesture of love to his friend…
“If there’s any company other than Sport For Jove
making Shakespeare live and breathe all over again,
in new ways, I don’t know of it.”

Macbeth
By William Shakespeare
“…O full of scorpions is my mind dear wife…”
Sport for Jove’s 100-minute Macbeth plunges students into
Shakespeare’s most immersive and haunting play that tells
of the murderous ascent to greatness of a husband and wife
who believe they can control time and destiny. A loving
couple, suffering the loss of a child, are surrounded by the
children of others – of the King, Macduff, Banquo. To what
extent is their first criminal act an act of love in that terrible
void, a sacrifice she makes for him and in return, he for her?
Sport for Jove’s critically acclaimed Macbeth is an ecstatic
vision of what love and ambition can do to people, of ghosts,
shadows and the terrors of the imagination.
A must-see for students of the play or young people being
introduced to Shakespeare for the first time from a company
with a peerless reputation for reimagining Shakespeare’s
classics.
“This is theatre that makes the pulse quicken and the
extremities tingle. This is soft kisses, hard bodies,
bloody battlefields and dark investigations of the
nasty and inexplicable human soul; what we want,
what we need and what we will do to get them.
This is Shakespeare. “

Of Mice And Men
By John Steinbeck
Set in the desperation of the Great Depression, Of Mice
and Men is one of the world’s most compelling tales of
friendship and survival. George and Lennie are displaced
migrant workers who dream of one day settling down on
their own piece of land. Their shared vision of a better future
and the strength of their friendship carry them through the
loneliness, oppression and uncertainty of one of the world’s
most profound eras of disillusionment. The play, adapted
by John Steinbeck from his extraordinary novel, remains a
stunning indictment, particularly in today’s era of economic,
political and moral disillusionment, of how we treat our
disenfranchised fringe dwellers, our migrant peoples and our
most vulnerable citizens.
Lennie: If you don’t want me, I can go right in them
hills, and find a cave. I can go away any time.
George: No. Look! I was just foolin’ ya. ‘Course
I want you to stay with me, Lennie. Trouble with
mice is, you always kill ‘em.

What is the Matter with Mary Jane? is the powerful, funny
and inspiring, one woman show about Robinson’s 12-year
rollercoaster ride into the torturous world of eating disorders.
Mary Jane has become a classic play text not only as a

This searingly honest piece delves into this mental illness,
exposing the hopelessness felt when trapped within such
a disorder. It will have you in fits of uncontrollable laughter

heart wrenching comedy but most of all, it’s true.

famous ambiguities and challenges, answering questions and
taking direction live on stage from your students.
A complete, hands-on experience that combines the
unfiltered relationship students need with the plays’ action
while also ensuring they are ‘watching with understanding‘,
extracting the key ingredients and critical thinking required to
write on the plays under exam conditions.
