Description
The Education Manager is responsible for overseeing all components of the education
programming for Chicago Children’s Theatre. This position reports directly to the artistic
director, supervises education staff and interns, and works in partnership with other
staff to realize the vision of the department. This is an exciting time for the organization
as it prepares for a significant expansion of educational offerings, maintaining a core
focus on programming for children with special needs. Duties include but are limited to:
Curriculum planning and materials
 Create study guide and other educational materials related to each show for
student groups and general public program books.
 Shape educational activities to meet Common Core Standards when working
with school groups.
 Meet with teachers to plan study guides, show-specific education
opportunities, and get feedback on what is most helpful to their classes.
 Create supplemental materials including social stories for Red Kite events
and autism-friendly performances.
 Oversee the creation of curriculum for new studio classes and school
residencies.
 Design and implement curriculum for selected courses, directly teaching
those programs that fit manager’s expertise and interests.
Student matinee series coordination
 Promote the student matinee scholarship program to schools throughout
Chicago, overseeing the review and selection of qualifying schools to
participate, coordination of bus reimbursements, and solicitation of thankyou materials.
 Oversee the scheduling of field trips, providing teachers information on how
to incorporate the show, source material, topics, and themes into their
classroom work.
 Manage the process and procedure for school groups visiting the theatre,
working with front of house staff to make smooth flow of groups, manage
post-show discussions, and distribute materials to group leaders.
 Cultivate partnerships with teachers and school administrators.
Program management
 Lead the strategic and annual planning of educational programs.
 Select, train, and manage teaching artists.
 Work with marketing team to craft digital and printed materials.

Communicate with parents to provide information and details before and
during each class session.
Manage the creation, tracking, and reporting of all educational budgets with
support from finance staff.
Oversee the organization of camps, including the hiring of staff, overseeing of
registration process, managing of necessary training, and managing of
teaching artist curriculum development and teaching plans.
Tracking, evaluation, and reporting
 Track all educational activities, reporting to organizational leadership on
progress, development staff on accomplishments, and marketing staff on
successes.
 Manage documentation, assessment, and evaluation of all educational
programs.
 Communicate resource needs to finance, artistic, and development staff to
ensure appropriate support of all education programs.
Other duties
 Create and maintain relationships with other theatre and arts education
departments.
 Attend applicable trainings.
 Develop and maintain community and school partnerships.
 Promote internships and manage education interns.
Qualifications:






4 year degree in education, arts, or related field
3 years of arts education experience, preferably with a not-for-profit
organization
Experience working with special needs populations is preferred
Management experience: ability to lead a team, including but not limited to
staff, interns, contractors & volunteers
Ability to balance day-to-day work load with an analytical, growth-oriented
vision
Knowledge & appreciation of theatre and the arts
