TRAINEE ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION Based at: Citizens Theatre 119 Gorbals Street Glasgow, G5 9DS Reporting to: Citizens Theatre Company Stage Manager Accountable to: Citizens Theatre Company Stage Manager, Head of Production & Artistic Director Job overview: The Trainee Assistant Stage Manager will assist the Company Stage Manager in general stage management duties as well as line managing stage crew across the various auditoria of the Citizens’ Theatre and staff employed on projects outside the building. Responsibilities: Management & Main Duties To be part of the stage management team responsible for the stage management requirements of the Citizens’ Theatre productions both in Glasgow and outside the building. To be present at all production meetings, Health and Safety meetings and any other meetings or training sessions as may be required. To assist the Company Stage Manager in support of the company’s vision. To, on occasion, lead on stage management for smaller projects across the company, as required by the Company Stage Manager or Head of Production. To help create an environment where members of staff are enabled to work safely and to their full potential. To assist in the competent organisation and maintenance of the theatre stock of props and furniture. To assist in the organisation of props and furniture and ensure the safe upkeep of them whilst they are in the theatre. To also ensure the immediate return, in good condition, of these items at the end of the production. To carry out basic makes and alterations for props and furniture. To assist with the preparation and maintenance of rehearsal rooms and to make sure they are clean and safe for rehearsals. To be present at all technical and dress rehearsals, previews and first night performances and during the run of productions as required by the Company Stage Manager. To assist with the smooth and efficient running of all dress rehearsals, previews and performances. To be involved in education and activity workshops as required. To respond to any concerns of the acting company in conjunction with the Company Stage Manager, Head of Production and Production Administrator. In the capacity as show ASM to ensure the smooth running of the show in conjunction with all other departments during technical, dress and public performances. 1 To assist with the running of rehearsal and performance activity with particular responsibility for props. Read and interpret plans and sections with good knowledge of mark out procedures. Keep accurate records of prop settings, performance running details and any other relevant information. Health and Safety To assist in the development of risk assessments across the range of projects carried out by Citizens’ Theatre Ltd. To assist in the cast and crew health and safety inductions for productions as required by the Company Stage Manager. Financial To assist with the initial costing of the stage management requirements for productions. To be responsible to the Company Stage Manager for the finances for operations within your department in relation to the agreed budgets for productions and general maintenance. To make petty cash purchases as required and to account for expenditure. Communications/Profile To assist the Company Stage Manager on communications within the department. To promote positively at all times the work of the Citizens’ Theatre Ltd. both internally and to key stakeholders, audiences and the wider theatre industry. To represent the Citizens’ Theatre Ltd. at internal and external meetings when appropriate. To develop a network of contacts across Scottish Theatre. General To stay abreast of significant developments in related fields and to ensure this knowledge is disseminated as appropriate To undertake any reasonable additional tasks as may from time to time be required by the Company Stage Manager, Head of Production or Artistic Director. Evening and weekend work is required.
