I heard one of them sputtering, “We want to be careful, that *#* - damned John Ford could come along at about anytime now, and give us his usual ration of sh--!” His smart comment initiated a few more wise snippets from the group, none of them worthy of print. It was show and tell time, as suddenly the gang realized there were two more bodies in their midst than what there were when they started. “Good morning, Gentlemen,” I boldly stated. “I believe your a little too late, John is already here,” I announced. It was a mini-Superman moment of sorts, as I peeled off my hat and jacket, proudly displaying the wardens uniform. Norman was stripping down to his uniform at the same time, as he sauntered over from the other side of the roadway. Needless to say, there were eight very somber faces, and eight court tickets later, we jumped back into the Jeep headed for another deer drive in the making. Norman and I had again sent a message to this defiant crew. A message that deer drives were illegal, and that they could be in¿ltrated by the woods-cops, just as easily as not. Still, some lessons are learned the hard way. Before my career ended, I ran across the same old gang again and again, doing as they had always done before. Old habits were obviously hard to break – and I’m not sure in this case that they ever were broken. But through it all, the “catand-mouse” game was fun to play. It was more rewarding however, when for once, the mouse caught the cat for a change! John Ford Sr. is a retired State of Maine Game Warden and Waldo County Sheriff.
