Apply for Job #3610 4—LEGAL EMPLOYMENT WEEKLY Illinois Paralegal Association DREAM By: Caren Mansfield, a member of the Illinois Paralegal Association My morning started with fresh donuts and milk. A grateful client sent a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers to express happiness over the dedication I had shown when assisting on her case. She had written a letter to my supervising lawyer to remark on my abilities. That letter went into my “keeper” file. After the milk and donuts I settled down to work in my spacious office. The law firm had asked my opinion when redecorating. The cool colors and plush carpeting made it seem like I was working in a luxury suite. I was able to work uninterrupted until lunch. As I cleared my desk before lunch I contemplated the afternoon’s tasks. My secretary inquired whether I wished for the car to be brought to take me to the gym. Into my office stepped my employer. He would like to take me to lunch at the finest restaurant in town to show his appreciation for my hard work. After a delicious meal he suggested that I might like a raise and an additional week of vacation. I graciously accepted. Back at the office I worked on discovery with a client. The client had everything prepared in advance for me. Every question was answered with ease. There were no documents for the document production response. As I looked at the file I noticed that every document in the file was in chronologic order. It was neatly organized. Next it was time to schedule depositions for several witnesses in a matter with multiple parties. It took only a couple brief phone calls to reach all attorneys in the matter and schedule the depositions. Each attorney was pleased to travel from out of state to attend depositions in our office. Okay, okay....I’m dreaming. What else could it be. Most paralegals are happy to get that cuppa coffee or hot tea back to the cubicle piled high with documents, files and to do lists. When was the last time a paralegal worked at a task uninterrupted? When was the last time a deposition was scheduled in less than two phone calls? When was the last time a paralegal actually saw the wood on the top of the desk? Mine is wood, I think. When was the last time a client came to a meeting with everything prepared in advance? Or even came to the meeting with everything needed? And has a discovery response ever consisted of no documents. Truly a paralegal’s dream. For many paralegals a dream job is one with an office, a secretary, high salary and plenty of perks. While those jobs the ability to pull it all together. The ability to pull it all together can come from networking, attendance at seminars and being a member of a p r o f e s s i o n a l organization. The proper attitude is up to you. Be the glass is half full person. Do the best you can and make your job a are out there they are much fewer than those positions with lower salary, less or no secretary, cubicle and some perks. What makes the paralegal profession so exciting is that a paralegal can take any, okay, a position and make it a dream job. That takes the proper attitude and dream job.
