What a difference we are making!
"What's your impact*?" is the theme of this Jesuit Volunteer (JV) year. The asterisk adds: Show Up, Listen,
Act, Reflect, Repeat. The theme represents a strong Ignatian tradition of "praxis," acted upon reflection,
reflected upon action. We are asking the JVs to consider the effects of their year of service in both how
they make an impact and how they are impacted.
This edition of Focus will highlight some of the significant ways JVs and JV EnCorps members
are making a difference for those with whom they serve.

Our volunteers are important change-makers in the lives of those who experience marginalization and suffering. They are helping to build critical infrastructure and resources to increase the capacity
of our partner agencies. They are engaging at-risk students and increasing academic performance. They are providing health care
for those who otherwise would not be treated. And perhaps most significantly, our volunteers are creating social capital among the
people they serve, instilling self-worth, dignity, care, concern, trust, empathy, and a sense of connection.
Former JVs carry our four values of community, simple living, social and ecological justice, and spirituality in their hearts
and are changing the world in all manner of ways. As health professionals, nonprofit leaders, public servants in government leadership and service, teachers and education administrators, religious leaders, environmental scientists and specialists, and in countless other professions. Former JVs carry out our values in their work and in their community and church involvement. They are
building strong families, and in many cases encouraging their children to do a year of volunteer service. We are excited to have
second generation and even third generation JVs serving with us.
The impact of JVC Northwest has spread through the decades. Marking our
beginnings from 1956 at Copper Valley School in Alaska, the JVC movement spread
from the Oregon Province of Jesuits to Jesuit provinces across the country. Now two
organizations, JVC Northwest (where it all began!) and JVC in Baltimore, promote the
mission throughout the United States. Jesuit Volunteer organizations are also found
worldwide in Jesuit provinces.
JVC Northwest has been the model for the founding of numerous faith-based
volunteer programs. We were part of the impetus for national service programs like
Peace Corps and AmeriCorps. As an AmeriCorps National Direct program for four
years, we are delighted to be part of the 20th Anniversary celebration of this great

JV Stories of Impact
The 2014-15 JV service year theme, "What's Your Impact?", asks
JVs to reflect in multiple ways on their service with those on the
margins of society: what is the impact they have on the local community in which they serve, and what is the impact that same
local community has on them?
The following stories are a glimpse into the impact the
2013-14 JVs made in their day to day service this past year. Look
for reflections on how JVs are being impacted during their year in
our spring edition of Focus.
Increasing Access to Fresh Produce
Katie Snyder, Access to Resources Assistant
St. Margaret’s Shelter, Catholic Charities, Spokane, WA
In this position, Katie directly served women and children at St.
Margaret’s shelter, as well as other Catholic Charities programs, to
support people’s access to healthy foods through social enterprise
and food system capacity building.
This winter, a fellow JV and I recognized a need to provide fresh
produce specifically for clients in permanent supportive housing units. With produce from a local food bank and the help of St.
Margaret's case managers, we created a project that now delivers 5-10 pounds of fresh produce to 40 families each week. I first
recruited and coordinated volunteers to sort and bag produce,
determined whether to use plastic or cloth bags, and tracked the
number of pounds of produce. Recently a woman approached me at
a farmers market, and, recognizing us from our banner as the ones
who deliver a bag of produce to her family each week, thanked me
and said, "We really appreciate the bags each week. My daughter
eats salad now and never has before. Please keep the bags coming!"

silent reflection as an opportunity to be reminded of why I chose
to do a year of service. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to have
been a small part of this impactful work.
Building Community,
Breaking Isolation

Alaskan AIDS Assistance Association, Anchorage, AK
During his JV year, Chris provided services to support individuals living with HIV/AIDS and/or their families in maximizing their
independence, as well as managed the food program and assisted
with HIV prevention efforts.
For several months, I’ve created weekly events for our clients to
participate in. Our events ranged from art gallery viewings to
walks, movie screenings to greenhouse visits, crochet lessons to
card games. Despite interest among our clients at the beginning
of the year, it took a while to get steady attendance at the events.
My first major success was our Easter egg coloring day.
Over a dozen clients and staff members gathered, compared to a
typical three to five, with conversation and laughter abundant in
the conference room. Clients were able to communicate with their
HIV-positive peers on topics as ordinary as Easter traditions, to
as deep as the isolation and loneliness some feel as a result of their
disease. A feeling of true support, empathy, and compassion was
palpable in the room, a coming-together of strangers, a sense of
unity. From this conversation stemmed a discussion among myself
and administration about possibly beginning a support group for
more clients to discuss the struggles and joys of living a life combating HIV/AIDS.
Helping Students Shine

As a JV, Mallory provided intensive academic support to identified at-risk students, particularly in math, reading, and science.
Throughout the year, she tutored students in and outside the classroom individually and in small group settings, as well as lead lessons
for specific class grades.

JV EnCorps: Purpose
& Passion for the
Greater Good
We are excited for our Jesuit Volunteer (JV) EnCorps program to
embark on its fourth program year in Portland, Ore., supporting
adults 50 and older who engage in value-centered service and
spiritual formation! The launch of JV EnCorps was made possible
through a grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and other
generous donors. During our two recent program years combined,
the Portland JV EnCorps participants (JVEs) provided an impressive 9,000 hours of volunteer service. This September, JV EnCorps

will commence with 22 JVEs in Portland and 23 JVEs in Seattle,
Wash., while also forming a new group in Bend, Ore. This program
expansion will greatly amplify the impact of our service geographically and more than double the hours of service provided on
behalf of social and ecological justice.
Our JV EnCorps expansion to Seattle has been met with
great enthusiasm! Under the capable leadership of our new Seattle
JV EnCorps Program Coordinator, Helen Pitts, and a passionate
group of four Core Team volunteers (Denny Duffel, Pam Piering,
Kathy Collins and Jim McGinley), we will begin our inaugural
year in Seattle with 23 participants and a wait list for the 2015-16
JVE member, Bob Cretsinger, with guests at local hospitality program.
service year! Participants herald from a wide range of professional
backgrounds including nursing, social work, primary and secondary education, physical therapy, law, journalism and architecture. Two JVEs are former Sisters and one is a Certified Spiritual
Director.
Seattle JV EnCorps offers JVEs 30 service placement
opportunities from 13 nonprofit agencies. Most of these organizations address social issues that stem from homelessness, mental illness, drug and alcohol abuse, chronic diseases such as
HIV/AIDS, as well as support disadvantaged youth, refugees,
and the elderly. The Seattle program also offers ecological justice
volunteer opportunities to develop food gardens for low-income
families and environmental education for at-risk youth at wetland
restoration sites.
Bend JV EnCorps, led by a dedicated group of Core
Team volunteers (Patty Christopher, Kathy Skidmore, Marilynn
Kieffe, and Karen Sheldahl), is partnering with the local volunteer center, Volunteer Connect, to develop service placements and
are recruiting committed JVEs from an ecumenical base of local
churches. The Bend group will begin with an opening retreat in
October. All of our JV EnCorps programs ask JVEs to engage in 5
to 10 hours of volunteer service each week, three all-day retreats
throughout the year, monthly Community Meetings and daily
spiritual practice.
We are inspired by this generation of volunteers who are
seeking to leverage their many years of professional experience
and lives well-lived for the betterment of their communities. This
stirring potential and wholehearted interest in JV EnCorps allows
us to consider a new motto for 2014-15:

What’s Capacity Building? An example of impact
77 Our JV AmeriCorps member capacity building projects enhance and expand
our partner agencies’ abilities to develop program networks and resources,
include marginalized populations, positively engage disadvantaged youth, and
culturally sensitize delivery of services.
77 As part of his service supporting men in recovery, Sean Luke at
Volunteers of America Men's Residential Center (MRC) in Port­land,
Ore., developed a partnership with a studio that offers comprehensive wellness services including yoga, massages, and acupuncture
to his clients. To make this a sustainable relationship for the studio
and the MRC and its clients, Sean setup a volunteer barter exchange
the clients can participate in for no-cost services at the studio.
The National Direct AmeriCorps Grant
from the Corporation for National and
Community Service enables JVC Northwest
to send JVs to increasingly impoverished
and marginalized areas throughout the
Northwest. Lowering the cost of a JV placement by almost half, the grant allows for 135
JV AmeriCorps members to receive living
allowances and an education award at the
end of their service year.
The JV EnCorps program successfully
completed its third service year in June 2014.
A grant from the M.J. Murdock Charitable
Trust significantly contributed to the creation of this program and has empowered
JVC Northwest to expand JV EnCorps to
Seattle, Wash., and Bend, Ore., in 2014-15.

reunion of over 35 FJVs spanning from 1967-1980 gathered
in Omak, Wash., to celebrate
their service at Paschal Sherman
Indian School and spend time
with one another. There were
several meals shared and multiple activities offered throughout
Omak for FJVs and their families
to participate in, as well as a DVD
with 1700 pictures of JVs that
have served in Omak throughout
the decades.

Several FJVs recently
helped organize and host the
annual Micah Gathering on
Whidbey Island in the beautiful
Puget Sound region of Washington state. The weekend included
multiple discussions and presentations based around the four
core values. It happens yearly
in mid-July and above all serves

served in remote St. Mary’s,
Alaska, during the mid 1970s
celebrated the 40th anniversary
of their service by sponsoring
the Jer usalem crosses provided to the ’14-15 JVs. In their
words, “The Jesuit Volunteers of
St. Mary’s Alaska (1974-78) are
thrilled to celebrate our 40th

become an ’extended’ family to
one another by sharing our joys

Kathleen O’Neil (Portland, OR ’93-94) just received a
Masters of Public Health (closest
experience to being surrounded
by JVs!) with an international
program in English (affiliated
with Columbia University) in
Paris, France. She will continue
at INSERM (French Institute for
Health and Medical Research)
in the Epidemiology Department, where her research is for
children with congenital heart
defects. Her son Declan is five
years old and is now much more
fluent in French than she is!

Brian Eirich (Juneau,
AK ’96-97) was married to Raisa
Bailey on September 6, 2014, at
St. Nicolas Catholic Church. His
daughter, Addison Elizabeth,
age seven, was a Junior Maid of
Honor. Brian is a computer software executive.
Sara (Gammell) Whitcomb (Portland, OR ’96-97) just submitted
paperwork for tenure at University of Massachusetts-Amherst
is, watching Jack, 11, and Caeli, 7,
grow like weeds, and celebrating
14 years with Stuart [Whitcomb],
her partner in crime. “As ever
I’m dreaming of Portland and
wishing the ’96-97 Portland JVs
all the best!”

(Spokane, WA ’00-01) and his
wife moved to Malawi in July
to begin positions with Peace
Corps Response. His wife will
be training medical students
and family medicine residents
and he’ll be working with an
NGO called SEEED (Social Economic Enhancement and Enterprise Development) Malawi on a
variety of projects.

for an East Coast excursion

groom have been together since
before his JV year, with Elana’s
first visit to Alaska during that
JV year! They recently tied the
knot to make their incredible
relationship official; all family
and friends there had an absolutely great time at this beautiful
spring wedding and it was great
to reunite as FJVs! Most of James’

on retreat as undergraduates at

stayed connected to the community ever since.

On March 23, 2014, at Holy
Family Parish in Concord, Mass.,
Devon Katz (Billings, MT ’10-11)

After JVC Northwest, they spent
two years on opposite ends of the
country yet always moving closer
to the date they would be married
and finally in the same zip code.
In true Montana JV style, a Ginger
Ale toast and a talented FJV-led
flash mob dance kicked off the
celebration of the blessed day.

In memory
Sr. Marijane Ryan – JV supervisor in St. Michael’s, AZ. Marijane
Ryan, 78, of Phoenix, Ariz., passed away on April 10, 2014. Born
the youngest of eight children on August 8th, 1935, in Boston,
Mass., Marijane experienced a long full life. Marijane became a
nun in the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. In 1968 she was sent
to St. Michael’s in Arizona where she began a lifelong relationship
with the Navajo. Using her training that she received in Boston at
Kennedy Memorial Hospital, she founded the St. Michael’s Association for Special Education and was the Director of this school
for 14 years. After leaving St. Michaels, Marijane moved to Los
Angeles and then eventually to Phoenix where she began her work
with Hospice.
Note from Anne Brickner (St. Michael’s, AZ ’72-74), a JV she supervised:
The school year of 1972-73 brought three JVs to a
new JV location: the Navajo Reservation and a small school
with large ideals: St. Michael’s Association for Special Education. I arrived in August to be greeted by a larger than life figure
coming across the dusty courtyard in a white Franciscan habit
and in brown cowboy boots. This was Sr. Marijane, Director of
the school and known to the Navajos as the nun in cowboy boots.
The school for about 100 students was founded by Sr.
Marijane to educate kids with physical or mental handicaps,
many in dire need. The apparent gratitude expressed by the

The Fr. Jack Morris, SJ Memorial Award honors a former Jesuit
Volunteer or friend of JVC Northwest who is inspired by and lives
out the four values of JVC Northwest, and is presented to its recipient at our annual Seattle Event. Following in Jack’s footsteps, the
honoree works to foster the development of their local community,
encourages spiritual growth and exploration in their own life and
in the lives of others, strives for social justice, and embodies a sustainable presence on Earth. Above all, this award is given to a person
who demonstrates a lifetime dedication to the service of others.

Navajo parents of these kids was enormous! During the week
it was a boarding school for students from some of the most
remote parts of the reservation. It was serious business with
lots of compassion for the students, appreciation of the culture,
and fun among the community of eight or so teacher volunteers.
Sr. Marijane heartily embraced the Navajos. An early
assignment was to begin Navajo lessons with Fr. Marcan...not
yah-tah-hey but yá át tééh! She encouraged us to share generously
with our Navajo neighbors. Our school employed local Navajos as
teacher aides, bus drivers, and for various projects, one of which
was to build a hogan next to the school for students and teachers
to use. At the hogan blessing ceremony, Navajos prepared mutton
stew and fry bread for a few hundred attending. A Navajo sand
painter created an intricate design inside the new hogan while
outside a few sheep were slaughtered for the meal. True to her often
playful side, Sr. Marijane asked that I pay close attention so that I
could handle the next sheep! In the weeks that followed, teachers
were encouraged to live in the hogan for a week with a group of
students for what became a sweet, cultural exchange. We volunteers had the run of our dorm and kitchen and enjoyed more than
a few evening discussions with Sr. Marijane as we snacked on the
ever present, enormous institution-sized box of cookies. Sr. Marijane gave us free range in our classrooms and encouraged us to use
our weekends to explore the surrounding areas and to embrace the
culture. She gave us as young volunteers a chance to grow in our
small community. 
