Synod fails to agree on
gays, divorcees
Vatican City
Roman Catholic bishops yesterday failed to reach consensus on opening the Church’s
doors to remarried divorcees
and gays after a special synod
on the family.
Vatican spokesman Federico
Lombardi said participants
had approved a “re-balanced” final report that took
into account the concerns of
the most conservative members.
In a final vote yesterday after
two weeks of heated debate,
three paragraphs touching
on the hot-button issues
of a more welcome stance
towards gays and divorcees
did not receive the twothirds majority needed.
The vote closed a synod of
bishops from around the
world, which has seen conservatives clash publicly with
liberals over a drive spearheaded by the pope to soften the Church’s approach
to sinners.

MP Ahmed Al Saati yesterday
announced his withdrawal from the
elections, several weeks after announcing the formation of his political society
A
newly-formed political
society, Al Watan has
announced its decision not to
contest in this year’s elections
although its leader has not
ruled out the possibility
of its members running
independently.
MP Ahmed Al Saati
yesterday
announced
his withdrawal from the
elections, several weeks after
announcing the formation
of his political society. “The
decision not to run for
Mr. Al Saati
membership of the House of
Representatives in the next
election is attributed to my
desire to focus on human
rights and humanitarian
works through the National
Institute for Human Rights
and also my commitments in
establishing Al Watan.
However, I still hope to have a
significant role in the political
field,” Mr. Al Saati said.
With the Al Watan still
being a new political society,
its foundations haven’t been
solidified yet. Its lack of status
as a legal entity will also deem
its members’ candidacy under
the Al Watan’s umbrella as
illegal and therefore it has
been decided to focus on
strengthening the society, he
added.
Shooting in eastern Saudi
Riyadh
Gunfire aimed at security forces set fire to an oil pipeline in
eastern Saudi Arabia yesterday, official media said, three
days after a local cleric was
sentenced to death.
Officers in the kingdom
“came under heavy gunfire
from an unknown source,
which led to a limited fire
breaking out on a subsidiary
oil pipeline,” the official SPA
news agency said.
The attack occurred at 2:00 am,
the report cited the Eastern
Province police spokesman
as saying, adding that the fire
had been extinguished.
Dewani honeymoon
hitman dies in jail
Cape Town
A man convicted of killing
British businessman Shrien
Dewani’s bride has died in a
South African prison, officials
said yesterday, just days after
Dewani himself went on trial
for her murder.
Xolile Mngeni, who was serving a life sentence for shooting Anni Dewani while she
was on honeymoon in Cape
Town in 2010, had been
previously diagnosed with a
brain tumour.
Prosecutors allege that the
Briton hired Mngeni to kill
his wife in a staged hijacking,
but the convicted killer was
unlikely to have been called
as a witness against Dewani
because of his illness.
“While we will not be
fielding any candidates under
the society as it may be seen as
illegal, some of our members
may still run independently,”
Mr. Al Saati said.
Meanwhile, he refused
to divulge the names of its
possible members running
independently.
Initially,
Al
Watan
announced its plans to field
at least 15 candidates in the
parliamentary and municipal
council elections.

Manama
tating that the Bahraini
citizens have shown
a peaceful and civilised
approach throughout the
history, the Human Rights
Ministry yesterday urged
Bahraini citizens to actively
participate in the upcoming
elections.
Expressing confidence that
the coming parliamentary
and municipal elections will
culminate successfully, the
ministry said, “The right to
vote and the right to run is one
of the most important pillars
of the democratic process and
that evolve steadily towards a
better future for Bahrain and
Bahrainis.”
Pointing that the political
participation is a fundamental
principle of the principles of
community development,
it added that the citizens
are also responsible for the
social development and state
building. “The real success
will not happen without the
participation in the public life
and give each voice its value.
It is the citizen’s right to
participate in the discussion
of public issues that concern
them. Citizens have the right
to elect those fit to represent
them in the councils and
municipality,” the ministry
said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the ministry
urged the Bahraini families
to introduce democratic
behaviour in their children as
it is an important element in
the development of society and
nation progress. “Participating
in the public life or decisionmaking through the use of
the right to vote and the right
to political participation is a
clear evidence of the validity
of the political climate in the
state, and a milestone for the
state to follow the democratic
approach,” the ministry
opined.

Readers’ VIEW
The evils of war
Dear sir,
War is evil. It does not
respect life. It is cruel,
violent, and usually results
in significant loss of life.
It also results in the massive
destruction of infrastructure
and natural resources.
Most of the casualties of
war are innocent civilians,
particularly
children,
women and old people.
These helpless people
normally would pay the
price of war, for what?
They are just caught in the
middle of a war started
by two opponents, intent
on defeating the other, at
the expense of innocent
civilians.
War also leads to forced
migration,
causing
potentially
large
displacements of population
like what is happening to
Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan,
Libya and other nations.
Palestinians were forced to
leave their homes in Gaza
when Israel decided that it
would like to bombard the
city in an effort to flush out
the ‘Hamas government’ at
the expense of the innocent
children, women and old
people, who had nothing to
do with their war!
More than 2,100 Palestinians
lost their lives during the
50-day war as the world
watched in silence, afraid to
stop Israel from killing these
innocent people.
War normally ends with
the complete destruction
of the opposing territory,
with most of its citizens
killed or enslaved and the
country left in total ruins.
The evils of war could
not be described and
measured.
We can only pray that
on-going wars would stop
and that there would be
no more wars in the future.

Preventing suicide
among the youth
Dear editor,
The picture under the title
‘Writing on the walls’ have
deeper meanings. What
makes youngsters to write
those lines publicly? There is
something behind it which
should be taken seriously into
consideration.
The social conditions, as
well as the family situations,
collectively play a major role
in a person’s life. Imbalance
in any of these aspects may
cause people to commit
suicide or think about the
same.
When dining in restaurants, I
often find some kids lingering,
while their
parents are
happily dining. These kids
are often neglected. The tiny
tots should be given care and
warmth of love in their tender
age.
This will help the kids to lead a
quality life or else they would
end up in committing greater
sins. This would eventually
bring the restlessness in the
family as well as in the society.
Parents
should
always
support, care and love their
kids, because this would make
them feel secured.
Such youth will rarely commit
any sin and even if they
commit any wrongdoing, they
open up to their dear ones
and follow advices.
Increase the bond within the
family and protect our new
generation from committing
suicide.

A warning to crazy drivers
Dear sir,
It was a good thing that
you published that report
about ‘Daredevils on the
road warned’ yesterday in
DT News, because this would
serve as a warning to crazy
drivers who drive like mad
whenever they get behind
the wheel, without total
consideration and regard to
other motorists.
The action taken by the
General Directorate of Traffic
was timely.
I was relieved to hear that
they are now devising new
measures to eliminate this
road menace.
Just this morning, I got a call
from my brother and he was
involved in a road accident
because a crazy driver drove
straight into his car after
jumping a traffic signal.
Thank God that my brother
was not seriously hurt but he
sustained some bruises and a
bump on the head.
Although the car was damaged,
my brother was thankful to be
alive and so was I.
It is high time that we clear the
roads of crazy drivers because
they are really the ones who
are causing traffic accidents in
Bahrain.
They have no right to endanger
the lives of other drivers and
engage in deadly stunts while
driving on the road.

Iraq MPs approve ministers
Baghdad

and interior ministers yesterday
after weeks of delay, as security
forces battle jihadist militants who
hold swathes of the country.
Khaled Al-Obaidi of parliament’s
Sunni Arab Itihad Al-Quwa

Not much of a laughing matter
I
t has been an interesting week in
economics, which is interesting in its
own right given it is some time since I have
pontificated on economics.
But I have spent much of the last 35 years
writing about business and finance and
quite frankly I find it a bit difficult these
days to find something that could raise a
smirk about the shortage of a secondary
market in sukuk.
Getting a chuckle about the latest moves
in Bahrain credit default swaps is beyond
me these days, largely because I have more
or less forgotten what they are.
This is no big deal because they are
largely irrelevant to anyone outside the
polit bureau of the central bank.
I was pondering this the other day when
people seemed to be getting excited about
a drop in global stock markets followed by
a recovery.
Shares in Europe and US have rebounded
after a turbulent week in which stock
markets tumbled to multi-month lows, I
read.
Well I am somewhat surprised that they
have bounced back because for the life of
me I can’t see why they are anywhere near
the artificial level they have reached.
Concerns that the global economic
recovery was running out of steam, poor
economic and corporate data, along with
worries about the impact of the Ebola crisis,
had sent stock markets into a nosedive.
The FTSE 100 had fallen 10 per cent since
early September, wiping £175billion off the
value of listed businesses.
Wall Street had also taken a bit of a dive
before the short term recovery.
What surprises me about this is that
global stock markets have been rising for
around five years at a time when I can see
no explainable reason why they should have
been heading north.
The underlying economy, in the US, UK
and Europe is as bad now as it was in 2009
and there are no real reasons to suggest that
things in the real economy are getting any
better.
We get the odd statistic about economic
grow finally returning, but when these
statistics are provided by economists they
are immediately rubbished by reality.
You can play about with macroeconomic
numbers until you are blue in the face but
you cannot get over the fact that across the
globe the average punter is now as badly
off as he was in 2008 when economists
were forecasting we were all heading for
Armageddon.
The US Federal Reserve chair Janet
Yellen said the other day that she was
“greatly concerned” about rising inequality
in the US.
The idea that anyone in power in the US
is bothered about inequality amazes me
because caring about inequality is almost
anti-American these days.
Perhaps the US political system is about
to be shaken up by its own version of
UKIP complete with a charismatic leader
who will challenge the main parties by
re-introducing a sort of anti-communist
McCarthyism era.
“I think it is appropriate to ask whether
growing inequality is compatible with
values rooted in our nation’s history,” Ms
Yellen asked.
If history teaches us anything the answer
to that is a resounding yes vote.
Full marks to the Bank of England’s chief
economist, Andy Haldane, for clarity on an
issue normally shrouded in mist, namely
what the bank plans for interest rates.
The other day he said: “Put in plain
English, I am gloomier. This implies
interest rates could remain lower for longer,
certainly than I had expected three months
ago, without endangering the inflation
target”.
If he is indeed gloomier, I think we
should be told in detail just how gloomy
he is.
Things in the UK economy have looked
pretty gloomy for some time.
You know things are getting desperate
when the country has pretty well sold off
all its airports to Spanish and Australian
investors.
Now when people in Spain and Australia
can buy your air infrastructure, you have
real problems.
Let us not forget that both these countries
have airlines that are technically bankrupt
and economies that are somewhat short of
booming.
So Mr Haldane sees an economy writhing
in both agony and ecstasy.
On the one hand, growth here and in the
US right now, according to economists, is
faster than in other big rich economies, and
a big contributor to that growth is business
investment.
That’s the ecstasy. And it is pretty potent
ecstasy, by historical standards.
The agony is that real wages are falling,
productivity or output per hour worked has
not risen for six years. And what households
earn on savings adjusted for consumer
price inflation is more-or-less zero.
In fact Haldane says that we have almost
never endured such a long period of flatness
in wages, savings rates and productivity. So
this is genuine agony.
The problem is that when economists
start getting gloomy it provides serious
problems for politicians.
That is why a lot of misguided Scots
decided that the problem was the English
and why a lot of equally misguided English
people have started blaming Europe.
But Scotland, England and Europe are
largely irrelevant in global politics these
days and we should be more worried about
how others will react.
The US appears to be falling back on its
solution for internal solutions by bombing
bits of the Middle East.
In China, you get the impression that Li
Keqiang is pondering the 25th anniversary
of Tiananmen Square and considering
taking a leaf out of Deng Xiaoping in facing
economic problems and political unrest by
attacking students.
Expect him to send the tanks into Mong
Kok just as soon as Kate Adie can get a
flight to Chek Lap Kok.

Islamic State group jihadists have executed a man in

The man was put to death

LEBANON LIMITS
REFUGEE ENTRY
War effect
Beirut
ebanon has all but closed its
borders to refugees fleeing
Syria’s civil war, overwhelmed
by an influx of over one
million people displaced by
fighting, UN and Lebanese
officials said yesterday.
Quoted by Lebanon’s
Al-Akhbar newspaper, Social
Affairs Minister Rashid
Derbas said Lebanon “no
longer officially receives any
displaced Syrians”.
He said exceptions were
available for refugees for
“humanitarian reasons” to be
judged by Lebanon’s social
affairs and interior ministries.
“We informed (the UN
refugee agency) UNHCR
that we are no longer able to
receive displaced people,” he
added.
Ninette Kelley, UNHCR’s
representative in Lebanon,
confirmed increased restrictions
at the border with Syria.

permitted to enter in the way
that they were previously,” she
told AFP.
“What we’ve seen over the
last two to three weeks is that
there are greater restrictions...
We’ve seen that there are
fewer people approaching us
for registration which is also
indicative of tightening of the
border.”
Kelley said there were no
precise figures on the number
of refugees allowed to enter.
“Some days there are refugees
that are allowed in, and there’s
other days where it’s only a
few.”
Kelley said some refugees
were still entering under the
humanitarian criteria, which
the government has yet to
publicly explain or share with
UNHCR.
She said the restrictions
started on Lebanon’s northern
border in August and were
extended to the main official
border crossing, Masnaa,
on its eastern frontier in
September.
Not all Syrian refugees enter
Lebanon through the official
crossings, however, with many
traversing the porous and
difficult-to-patrol border area.
Lebanon is already hosting
more than 1.1 million Syrian
refugees, an enormous strain
for a country with a population
of just four million.

fresh tensions. (AFP)

repulsed a new attempt by Islamic State (IS)
fighters to cut off the border with Turkey yesterday
as troops battled the jihadists in neighbouring Iraq.
A Kurdish official reported five new US-led
strikes around Kobane overnight as the coalition
kept up its air support for the town’s defenders.
But the US military said that while it saw
some “encouraging” signs, the strikes might not
prevent Kobane’s fall and its priority remained the
campaign against the (IS) group in Iraq.
Heavy IS mortar fire hit the Syrian side of
the border crossing with Turkey which is the
Kurdish fighters’ sole avenue for resupply and the
only escape route for remaining civilians, Kurdish
official Idris Nassen told AFP.
The jihadists launched a fierce attack from the
east towards the border gate before being pushed
back, he added.
IS suffered heavy losses in the fighting and
was forced to send in reinforcements, the Syrian
Observatory for Human Rights said.
The jihadists lost 21 of their people to air strikes
and another 14 in ground fighting on Friday, the
Britain-based monitoring group said. The Kurds
lost three of their fighters.
An AFP correspondent on the Turkish side
reported sporadic mortar fire very close to the
border crossing on Saturday afternoon.

Puff Pastry
l 500gms flour l 250ml water l 10gms salt l 375gms butter For the crisps
l 250gms puff pastry
l 100gms icing sugar
For the pastry cream
l 1 cup milk
l 1 vanilla bean
l 2 egg yolks
l 1 Tbs corn starch
l 50 gms granulated sugar.
For the filling cream
l 1 cup heavy cream
l 50gms caster sugar [mixed with
the seeds from the vanilla bean]
l ½ cup blueberries
l ½ cup raspberries
l 4 large strawberries
How to make?
For the puff pastry, mix the flour,
water and salt together until
smooth dough. Leave the dough
for 15 minutes. Then roll out the
dough and add the butter inside.
Spread again and fold the dough
like a portfolio.
Again leave the dough for 15
minutes in the fridge. Repeat
the action to spread and fold
the dough four times, letting the
dough rest between each. Your
dough is ready to be used and
spread as per your wish.
Cook according to your preparation
but generally a puff pastry is
cooked between 200 and 220*
centigrade.
Once ready, roll down the puff
pastry to a sheet, which is five
millimetres thick. Cut small disks
of five cm diameter each. With
the rolling pin, flatten them down
to a very thin disk using icing
sugar to keep it from sticking
to the table. Put each disk on a
silpad and bake until crisp. And
while it is baking, heat one cup of
milk with one fresh vanilla bean
split open.
In a mixing bowl, mix the egg
yolks and the sugar to a frosty
mix, add the flour [or corn
starch] and pour the boiling milk
over. Place back on the fire and
boil it for two minutes and then
cool on ice. For the whipped cream, beat the
fresh heavy cream on ice [scrap
the inside of the vanilla bean
and add it to the cream], add the
sugar and beat until it ‘peaks’. When the pastry cream is cooled,
foil it in the whipped cream. It
has to have a nice texture and
consistency.
Take each disk at a time, put a
big tablespoon of the prepared
cream in the middle, spread it
around, and place all the berries
on top. Repeat the operation
with three or four disks piled on
each other. Dust with sugar and
decorate the plate as you wish.

Dream
A very dear relative of mine passed away recently. He was like
a father to me and during his last few years of fighting the deadly
disease cancer, he lived with me and my family too. After his demise,
I am feeling a huge void. It was then that I saw a dream which
remained in my mind for a long time.
I saw that I was standing on the ground and I saw him sitting on
an elevated slope. I couldn’t look at him directly as a bright light was
shining from all the corners around him.
He was also saying something to me, but unfortunately I couldn’t
make it out - what does this dream mean?

It’s not unusual to dream of a deceased family
member. Such dreams are sometimes expressive of
our attempts to deal with our feelings, guilt or anger
in connection with the person who died; or our own
feelings about death.
This dream could have a number of possible
meanings. The first is a normal part of the grief
process. The subconscious mind may not fully accept
the finality of death, and so produces dreams in
which the deceased is still alive. A second possibility
is that the dreamer misses the deceased very badly,
so the subconscious mind produces a dream for the
purpose of comfort and wish-fulfilment.
A third possibility is that something during the
past day reminded the dreamer of the deceased. This
reminder might be anything from visiting a place
one had visited with the deceased before their death,
or talking about the deceased or even encountering
an odour associated with the deceased

I tend to test out a lot of nail
polishes, as well as different
techniques with nail art and

going for the gel finishes. And
as beautiful and addictive
they are, they can really dry
our nails and weaken them.
I always advise clients at
the salon to give your nails

reapplying, but my advice
alone is not enough.
Healthy nails and hair do

I started using Neem oil on

promised to strengthen
the keratin and improve

I noticed it did (my
nails are stronger
now).
I also prefer the
bottled version as I
like having it on my
nightstand and adding
a few drops to my nails every
night before going to bed.
The smell doesn’t bother
me and the bottle is made in
such a way that only a little oil
comes out each time.
A month after using the oil
nightly, I was happy with my
nails even without tarnish.
In the past, I always felt the
need to have nail polish not
only for the colour but also to
protect my nails.
I would sometimes use it as
a base coat so to stop from the
nails from breaking.
But now thanks to the
Neem oil, my nails are
stronger than before.

Homoeopathic Practitioner and Nutritionist, Dr.
Shuchi Nagori, answers DT News’ readers queries on healthy living.
1. Someone in my family is going through menopause right
now, and seeing how stressful and the level of discomfort it brings
to her, I wanted to know if there is something that should be added
to her diet or left out to make this phase of life easy?- F.D.
Dr. Nagori: Yes, it is true that few changes in dietary habits
before and during menopause can ease/alleviate the
menopausal symptoms like dry skin, weight gain,
hot flushes, bone mineral loss, mood swings,
etc. During menopause, we should eat variety
of foods with more intake of calcium, iron,
zinc, magnesium, fiber-rich foods and drink
plenty of water. We should take a healthy diet
that includes unprocessed/unrefined foods like
lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, legumes, fresh fruits
and vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products. We
should increase intake of plant-estrogens by eating more soya
milk/flour, linseeds, flax/pumpkins/sunflower seeds, celery, green
beans, etc., which help in hormone balance and try to avoid sugar,
caffeine, spicy foods, alcohol, salt, saturated and trans-fats.
2. Is it true that eating five small meals throughout the day is
better than eating three big ones. Don’t they amount to the same
number of calories and does it also matter what food items should
be in the first meal and what is in the last one? -Shawna K.
Dr. Nagori: No, it is not true. You can organize
your diet frequency (3 to 5) whichever is
convenient, enjoyable and sustainable for
your body as per your schedule, lifestyle and
personal preferences. But most important
is to eat the right amount of total calories
as per body needs with balanced nutrients
(proteins, carbs, fats, vitamins and minerals)
from right sources. It is better to start your day
with water, proteins in breakfast, balanced meal in
lunch, light dinner with less fat and carbs and more proteins, snacks
in between should be well selected. But sometimes food items can
vary with activities and lifestyle.
3. Can you recommend something that I
should eat which will strengthen my hair from
within as I have very brittle hair and suffer
from hair loss-Huda S.
Dr. Nagori: Healthy diet rich in the
following nutrients can help in minimizing hair
loss. Eat diet rich in Proteins (milk, egg, cheese,
yogurt, sprouts, tofu, lentils, beans, quinoa etc.);
Iron (fish, green leafy vegetables, spinach, raisins, nuts, pumpkin
seeds); Vitamin A, C (citrus fruits, kiwi, tomatoes, carrots, mango);
Omega-3 fatty acids (flax seeds, walnuts, tuna); Vitamin B- biotin
(sunflower seeds, soybeans, lentils); Minerals – copper, zinc (
lettuce, leafy vegetables, fresh and dried fruits, turnips, peanuts,
potatoes). But along with dietary care, we should exclude the
other causes too like excessive use of chemicals in shampoo/dye,
hormonal imbalance, dandruff, certain medications and stress.

A
nnabelle features the story of a
pleasantly happy couple, John
and Mia Form, and how the events
preceding the birth of their first child
ends up having tormenting effects
on what should ostensibly have been
a blessed sail into familial joy and
integrity.
Evil haunts through the
notorious Annabelle doll that
ends up corrupting and breeding
darkness in the lives of the people
they sanction help from, leaving the
couple powerless and at the mercy
of the conflicting desires of demons.
A play on psychological cognition
has been pulled off very well. For
one, the movie places a pregnant
woman at the centre of its ploy
and manages to extract extreme
sympathy and weakness in cynicism
from the audience.
One is left speechless at what
mayhem unwraps itself around the
woman and how much her power to
endure reflects with their will to keep
watching the ominously disturbing
signs of torture.
Additionally, the idea of a
baby, fragile, innocent, weak,
and uncertain, feeds itself over
the audience’s worry and concern
over the same, blanketing what
happens in the movie with a
gloomy air of misconduct.
Were the possible alternatives
of the movie brought under
scrutiny, one would realize that
the stage that was set was of a very
dormant nature, helping keep a
constant check on the ephemeral
thrills revealed to constantly grip
the audiences’ attention.
Letting aloof meagre amounts
of enticement at randomly spaced
intervals dragged the movie as it
paced slowly, but steadily, towards
an end that makes one resonate with
the idea of a test in patience.
Annabelle feeds and thrives on the
expectant eagerness of the audience.
Many scenes, at its climactic ends,
have but the suspenseful movement
of camera and startling sounds of
apparent horror to keep the audience
entertained, ever teasing them into

believing in the unhappening events
of susceptibility.
Empty hopes capture the essence
of a major portion of the movie and
ensures a decrease in the degree to
which its potential is satisfied.
Imparting an independent
judgment, the movie fails to
stay firmly rooted to the entities
it portrays.
Rather, it uses the preordained
sense of fright and certain
definitive formulas to convey its
plot in a state of contrivance that
exacerbates its desperate tries to
scare.
The title sequences alone
exuded a better aura of horror
when compared with the entirety
of the film.
It stands to show how the
makers’ idea of a horror movie
still stands true in its picturesque
conception, but fails that much
in its realistic and practical
outplay of the intended feel to
adorn it with.
The
lighting
and
cinematography suited the
atmosphere
very
well
and
complimented the movie with a
subtly creepy mood, that which the
plot did injustice to in terms of its
impactful immersion into the depths
of the horrifying consequences.
Everything is well measured
and framed, with a case of stellar
capture of the characters’ emotions
and body language.
Annabelle Wallis was great in her
role as Mia, and every movement of
hers had a reason, most pleasingly
natural, attached to it.
She seemed stitched into the
seams of the movie’s mood, all the
while immensely contributing to
what made the better parts of the
drama, always carrying it with grace
and supple confidence even in the
face of clamouring factors.
Ward Horton was very controlled
in his performance, while Alfre
Woodard seemed very artificial and
unconvincing in whatever she was
attempting to portray.
Annabelle is primarily a drama
that provides only a hint, a faint
twinge, of what true horror movies
deserve to be like.
It otherwise fits comfortably
into an end that is not truly worth
the anticipation and all the more
disappointing in a revelatory sense
of speaking.

English
What is the difference between ‘obtain’ and ‘attain’?
‘
Obtain’ means ‘to get’; when
you obtain something, you
are in possession of it. You
gain a physical object. The
use of this word does not
necessarily imply that you
have put in a lot of hard work
to get what you want. For
example, it has now become
possible for people to buy
a PhD degree. They don’t
really earn it by doing the
necessary work; they get it by
merely paying for it. It is also
possible to ‘attain’ a degree.
When you do this, you are
implying that you worked
very hard to get the degree.
The word ‘attain’ is normally
used to mean ‘to accomplish’
or ‘reach a stage of ’.

MH17 discussion with Putin ‘constructive’
Sydney
ussian President Vladimir
Putin was cooperative and
constructive when asked for his
help in allowing investigators
access to the MH17 crash site
in Ukraine, Australian Foreign
Minister Julie Bishop said yesterday. Bishop met the Russian
leader on the sidelines of the
Asia-Europe Meeting, just days
after Australian Prime Minister
Tony Abbott warned he would
confront Putin over the shooting down of the plane at a G20
meet next month. “I had a very
detailed discussion with him,”
Bishop told the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation of
their 25-minute talk in Milan.
“I expressed our concerns
about the Malaysia Airlines
crash, MH17, in which a number of Australians were killed,
and I implored him to use Russia’s influence over the separatists in eastern Ukraine to enable

our investigators to have access

he would seek to respond to
my request by asking the separatists to provide that access.”
Bishop said she had told other
world leaders that Putin had
been “most cooperative and
had responded very constructively” to her call.
The Amsterdam-Kuala Lumpur flight was blown out of the
air on July 17 as it flew over
rebel-held territory in eastern
Ukraine, in an attack that Kiev
and the West have blamed on
pro-Russian separatists operating a Russian surface-to-air
missile launcher. The rebels
and Moscow deny responsibility. On Monday, Abbott vowed
to “shirtfront” Putin at next
month’s G20 summit in Brisbane over the loss of the lives of
38 Australian citizens and residents in the crash. “I’m going
to shirtfront Mr. Putin -- you
bet I am,” Abbott told reporters, referring to an Australian
sporting term in which a player
charges someone.
“I’m going to be saying to
Mr. Putin -- Australians were
murdered and they were murdered by Russian-backed rebels
using Russian supplied equipment. We are very unhappy
about this.” Three months after
the plane was shot down, killing all 298 onboard, debris and
belongings lie scattered around
the Ukrainian countryside. International investigators led
by Dutch police were forced
to suspend their hunt for clues
and corpses in August when
fighting flared around the site.
Bishop said experts had advised
that they required another visit
to the crash site to check for any
more human remains.(AFP)

following a tip-off from what
the military called a “credible
source”. “I have decided to increase the number of units in
the area -- units with specialised sensors,” Commander
Jonas Wikstroem told reporters at a press conference in
Stockholm.
“We still judge that the in-
formation we received yesterday was very trustworthy,” he
added, but declined to comment on what the military had
discovered after more than
24 hours sweeping the sea
around islands in Stockholm’s

Swedish defence analysts
cited by local media speculated that a foreign submarine
may have been in the area to
replace old spy equipment or
to monitor a Swedish naval
exercise. Wikstroem declined
to give details of the reinforcements to the “intelligence

could provide information to
“a potential opponent on how

there is ongoing “underwater

Sturridge set for prolonged spell on sidelines
London
iverpool manager Brendan
Rodgers has revealed England striker Daniel Sturridge is
set to be sidelined for another
month.
Sturridge has already been
out of action for six weeks due
to a thigh strain he picked up
on international duty.
The 25-year-old had hoped
to make his comeback tomorrow when Liverpool travel to
Queens Park Rangers in the
L
Premier League.
But, according to the Liverpool Echo, the former Chelsea
forward pulled his calf during training on Thursday and
could now be absent for up to
another month.
He has already been sorely
missed by Liverpool, who have
struggled to emulate last season’s free-scoring form, and is
likely to be out of action for
the Reds’ Champions League
double-header against Real
Madrid and England’s Euro
2016 qualifying match against
Slovenia.
“Daniel has pulled his calf,”
Rodgers told the newspaper.
“He’s looking at being out for
another two to four weeks.
“It’s a big blow as we were
looking forward to welcoming
Daniel back. He has worked
tirelessly.
“But we have other players training hard and working
hard and we will turn to them.
It’s why we bulked up the squad
in the summer.”

Her participation in this
year’s event, which switches to Singapore for the first
of five editions, was in
doubt after she was forced
to pull out of the Beijing
tournament earlier this
month because of a knee
problem.
Williams, though, said
she was ready to play.
“I don’t care who I play,
to be perfectly honest
with you. You can put me
against anybody at this
point, I’m ready,” she said
after the draw.
“I really can’t wait for
my match. I wish I had a
match tomorrow.”
The action gets underway tomorroww at Singapore’s revamped indoor
stadium, which forms part
of the city-state’s new $1
billion Sports Hub.
Angry India may scrap 2016
West Indies tour
New Delhi
ndia may scrap their tour
of West Indies in 2016 after
the Caribbean team’s abrupt
pullout on Friday, said an
angry Indian cricket board
(BCCI) which is also considering legal actions and seeking intervention of the game’s
world governing body.
The tourists abandoned the
series with another one-dayer,
a Twenty20 international and
three test matches left to play
over a protracted payment
dispute between the players
and their board.
The West Indies Cricket
Board (WICB) said it had
been left with no choice but
to abandon the tour of India,
an action that angered the
world’s richest cricket body,
who swiftly roped in Sri Lanka
as replacements to play a five-
I
match ODI series next month.
“It will be very difficult to
play West Indies in bilateral
series in future. They have to
demonstrate the willingness
that such situations never
happen again,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel said.
The Indian cricket team is
scheduled to tour the Caribbean for three tests, five ODIs
and a Twenty20 match early in
2016.
“We thank our friends Sri
Lanka who agreed to the tour
on a short notice but unfortunately we couldn’t fit in the
tests as there was not enough
time.”
The BCCI was considering
legal actions against WICB
and has called an emergent
working committee meeting
on Tuesday to discuss the issue, Patel said.
Cilic qualifies for ATP World Tour Finals
Moscow
.S. Open champion
Marin Cilic has booked
his place in the elite eightplayer ATP World Tour Finals in November. The 26-year-old Croatian
is sixth in the standings and
now guaranteed a spot at the
prestigious tournament from
November 9-16 courtesy
U
of his grand slam victory at
Flushing Meadows.
One place in the tour finals is reserved for a major winner who is outside
of the top seven in the race
standings.
The only scenario that
could have led to Cilic missing out would have been if
he dropped outside the top
eight and Australian Open
champion Stan Wawrinka
ended up eighth, which now
cannot happen.
Joining him in London
will be Novak Djokovic, Rafa
Nadal, Roger Federer and
Wawrinka. Kei Nishikori,
Tomas Berdych and Milos
Raonic currently occupy the
remaining three places.

board in the southern Chinese
city ahead of compatriot Scott
Hend. Four-time major winner Ernie Els -- the overnight
leader -- endured a difficult day
stumbling to a one-over-par 71

Fraser, ranked 282 in the
world, last played competitive
golf in February when he was
forced to retire from the Dubai
Desert Classic during the sec-
ond round because of excruciating tendonitis in his left hand.
Surgery to remove bone, three
months worth of injections and
rehabilitation followed, with
Fraser only able to start practising again six weeks ago before
getting back into competitive
golf on Thursday.
“No one is more surprised
than I am, that’s for sure, after
eight months of sitting on the
couch,” Fraser told reporters
at the Hong Kong Golf Club.
“I wasn’t really sure what to
expect. To come in and play
the way I did on the back nine
today was pretty pleasing,” he
added.
Fraser -- who has two European Tour wins -- started with
a bogey but bounced back with
six birdies, including four on
the inward half. Els felt considerably less comfortable during round three at the par 70,
6,699-yard course in Fanling,
picking up a double-bogey and
finishing with two bogeys in the
last four holes. The Hong Kong
Open is a co-sanctioned European/Asian Tour event. (AFP)

again as Australia lost a
four-day warmup game against
Pakistan ‘A’ by 153 runs in Sharjah yesterday. Clarke, who is
recovering from a hamstring
injury and needed some batting practice ahead of Wednesday’s first Test against Pakistan
in Dubai, managed just five off
as many balls before he was
bowled by left-arm paceman
Rahat Ali on the fourth and fi-

Clarke made just ten in the

29-28 victory in the Bledisloe

looked certain to take a famous
win when they led 28-22 with
time all but up, but the world
champions dashed their hopes
when Fekitoa crossed with just
three seconds left.
Replacement fly-half Colin Slade then coolly slotted
the conversion from 15 metres from the sideline to end a
brave challenge from an undersiege Australian outfit. Australia, who have not beaten New
Zealand since 2011, were in
turmoil heading into the Test
after back Kurtley Beale was
suspended following a series of
off-field incidents.
There had also been increasing questions over coach Ewen
McKenzie after successive loss-
es to South Africa and Argentina in the Rugby Championship
and rumours of discontent.
However, there were no signs of
disharmony as the Australians
played with more passion than
at almost any time throughout
the season.
The hosts survived an early
onslaught from the All Blacks
and then gradually began to get
the better of their opponents
as the match wore on. They
took a 15-12 lead into half-time

evaluate the fitness of Gareth Bale ahead of his side’s
Champions League trip to

Welshman was an unused

win at Levante after returning
to the Spanish capital with a
gluteal muscle injury picked
up in playing for his country
last week. And with the first
El Clasico of the season at
home to Barcelona to come
next weekend, Ancelotti insisted he would be taking
no risks with Bale’s fitness

gone at Munich’s Allianz Arena. Alonso, who joined Bayern
from Real Madrid in August,
netted his first goal for the

Thomas Mueller put the
hosts 3-0 up when he converted
a penalty after being dragged

Goetze made it 4-0 at the break
