A dry day is a challenge
that would prop up at times
mocking and giggling
at the faces of the editor
and his team members.
It happens with every
newspaper organisation. It
happens to us too.
There,
however,
are a few days when a
newspaper has enough,

routine dramas to spread
across its pages. But, can
you imagine a newspaper,
which virtually gives one
exclusive story on each
page?
It would be difficult.
Still, our team took up this
challenge. We do admit we
could not fill every page
with an exclusive story.

Yet, we have produced 11

All local pages have

Baghdad blasts kill 34
Baghdad
Car bomb blasts in two
neighbourhoods of the
Iraqi capital killed at least
34 people and wounded
54 yesterday, police and
medical sources said.
A suicide car bomb exploded at a police checkpoint
guarding Kadhimiyah, a
neighbourhood in northwestern Baghdad that is
home to one of the holiest
shrines.
A police colonel said at
least 10 people were killed
and 31 wounded, a toll
confirmed by a medical
source.
Farther west, in the district of Shoala, a car bomb
went off in a busy commercial street, killing
at least 24 people and
wounding another 23, a
medical source said.
There were conflicting
reports as to whether the
carnage in Shoala might
have been caused by two
consecutive explosions,
but a source at the interior
ministry gave a similar toll.
On Thursday, at least 12
people died in another car
bomb attack on the sprawling neighbourhood of Sadr
City.

Diploma woes
TWO-YEAR COURSE,
BUT UNENDING TESTS
Mohammed Zafran/DTNN
Manama
A
person, who received his
diploma certificate from
a private institution, is now
struggling to get it accredited.
Interestingly, it took the Indian
national Vijay Kurien almost
16 years to get the diploma
programme certificate.
Mr.
Kurien
enrolled
the diploma programme
at
the
National
Institute of Information
Technology Bahrain (NIIT)
in 1998. He had also paid
more than BD1000 for the
course. Moreover, he passed
the exams in 2000 in the first
attempt itself.
But it was in 2012 when he
finally received the diploma
certificate. Since NIIT Bahrain
was closed down in 2008, he
had to collect the certificate
from its headquarters in India. But his woes did not end
here. After receiving the
certificate in 2012, he promptly
updated his CV, hoping that
the diploma certificate would
brighten his prospect of
getting a better job.
But
three
companies
rejected his certificate due
to
accreditation
issues.
Speaking to DT News over
the phone from India, he said,
“I came to know from three
organisations, which wanted
to hire me, that the certificate
cannot be validated and that’s
why I could not get into these
prestigious companies.”
Mr. Kurien said that he
does not want to blame the
institution for the obstacles he
faced, instead he wants to get
his certificate validated. “The
damage has already been done.
There is no point in fighting
against them. I just want to
get my certificate approved. I
am only looking towards the
future,” he said.
He added that he had been
constantly trying to get in
touch with the institution’s
headquarters in India through
phone and email but there
were no responses until now.
“They acknowledged that
I am a legitimate student of
the institution and that I had
passed the exams. They said
they will resolve the issue
soon,” Mr. Kurien said.
A reply is awaited from
NIIT on DT News’ queries.

Mystery Murder
Crime thriller
The perpetrator killed his friend, stole a dinar from his wallet and
went on to order a sumptuous meal. But little did he realise the
Kingdom’s smart detectives would pounce on him within 24 hours!
T.S.Sreenivasa Raghavan/DTNN
T
he cops at Ministry of Interior
(MOI) recently received an alert
about a Bangladeshi National found
dead inside a flat at an apartment
complex located at Manama, as
reported in Al Amn.
On receipt of the alert, the cops
wasting no time rushed to the spot
and found that the crime site was
littered with articles. They could
also see bloodstains on the floor,
wall and refrigerator.
The crime scene, which presented
a higgledy-piggledy picture besides
the number of stab injuries on the
victims body pointed to a violent
fight and fisticuff between the
victim and his killer.
Excepting the mobile phone the
other valuables, which belonged
to the victim were intact which
prompted the police to conclude
that the motive behind the coldblooded murder was not theft.
The case appeared to be a
mystery as the police realised that
the soft-spoken and amiable victim
identified as Liton had no known
enemies or disputes with anyone.
Yet, he had been killed brutally! So,
what could have gone wrong?
Director, Criminal Investigation
Directorate
(CID)
Colonel
Abdulazziz
Al-Rumaihi
told
Al-Amn that the 34-year-old victim
had been working in Bahrain for
several years. “He lived alone
here. His wife and family live back
home,” he added.
According to the colonel, the
police immediately questioned the
victim’s neighbours. The police
also interrogated victim’s the
friends and colleagues from his
home country who used to visit
him frequently.
“One of his friends, Ragoul,
looked worried, scared and nervous
and we could see that he was making
a desperate attempt to appear calm.
Later, he calmed down and said he
hailed from the same of city of the
victim”, said Abdulazziz.
Ragoul and Liton were close
friends and they even used to carry
messages from their families back
home for each other. As Ragoul
explained, the cops suddenly
questioned him the minor scratches
on his hands and chest.
As a confused and shocked
Ragoul fumbled for a convincing
explanation, the cops posed another
loaded question about his visit to
the victim’s flat on the day of the
crime.
“But he denied seeing the victim
that day. But, we checked his
mobile phone and found, Ragoul
had received a call from the victim
just before the crime occurred. The
victim’s number was recognised
by other friends”, confirmed
Abdulazziz.
The injuries, victim’s phone
number on his mobile reinforced
the doubts that Ragoul was involved
in the crime, especially, after
some common friends revealed
that Ragoul and the victim often
squabbled.
“The friends said Ragoul interfered
in the victim’s family affairs. The
victim had even told them that
he had fought with Ragoul
a few days before the
episode,” Abdulazziz
explained.
With this, the cops confronted
Ragoul and took him to the crime
scene where he buckled under
pressure confessed to the crime.
Ragoul told the police that the
victim had called him to his place
to discuss some important matter.
The killer suspected that there
was some mysterious reason behind
the call, especially, after the victim
insisted that he should not be late.
His suspicion came true when Liton
received him very coldly.
The victim took out a paper from
his pocket containing some phone
numbers from his home country
and asked Ragoul if he knew any
of them. He identified the phone
number of the victim’s wife. This
made the victim angry.
The victim then accused him of
making advances towards his wife
and said she had complained about
the killer’s bad intentions as he had
made many international calls to
her number.
“The victim became jealous when
Ragoul said that the victim’s wife was the
one who called him and not the other
way round,” Abdulazziz disclosed. The
two started insulting each other, which
led to fisticuff.
Suddenly, the victim grabbed a
knife kept under his pillow but Ragoul
managed to knock it off his hand,
grabbed it and attacked the victim who
fell down. Ragoul stabbed Liton 50 times
all over his body!
“After the killing, Ragoul stole his
mobile phone and one dinar he found
in the victim’s wallet and went to buy a
meal with the stolen dinar. But, we
cracked the case and arrested
him within 24 hours”,
said a beaming
Abdulazziz.

most-sought-after fuelling unit,
once it starts functioning.
The reason is, the machine
accepts any monetary cards
including ATM cards and credit
cards to ooze out petrol from
the hose.
The machine named ‘Encore,’
the first-of-its-kind, is a product
of Gilbarco Veeder Root, a
technology company, and has
been introduced at the Estiqlal
petrol bunk in Bahrain.
“The machine accepts every
types of cards. Sadeem cards
of Bapco are also accepted
for fuelling. Even though, the
machine has been introduced
in US, it is first time that it is
being introduced in Bahrain,”
machine technician, Ranjith

Moreover, the machine
need not be manned by any
staff. The customer himself
can insert the card and enter
the amount for fuelling the
vehicle. Following that, the
customer can pull out the
hose and fill his car with fuel.
The user will also get a receipt
after completing the fuelling
process.
“The Encore petrol filling
units are unmanned in the US.
Even though this is a self service
system, the people here hesitate
to get out of their car. So, we will
engage a person for managing
the new unit,” added Mr. Singh.
According to the bunk
officials, the machine which
costs approximately BD5000,
will be functional within few
days as the software installation
and other network installations
are still in progress. A team of
technicians from the company
is providing assistance.
“We are doing a brisk
business and we find it hard
to manage the rush especially
during the peak hours. Hence,
this machine would help to
ease our job,” said an officer

The elections for a new 40-seat

The statement, issued yesterday,
said all sides in Bahrain must engage
“in serious negotiations and dialogue”
before any election takes place.
But a proposal by authorities in
September to relaunch a ‘National

by Al Wefaq.
Head of Al Wefaq, Shaikh Ali

The Opposition is demanding an

It took part in two rounds of

Mohiddin could not help but
feel furious when they saw a
tearful Ruksana come out from
the Indian Embassy premises in
early 2013.
And this prompted the sisters
to create a Facebook page called
‘What’s my nationality?’ to pool
up the public support for the
plight of Ruksana, who has no
passport or nationality, even after
the Delhi High Court issued a
favourable verdict on her case.
Earlier, DT News has published
two articles depicting the plight
of Mohammed and Raziya, who
like Ruksana, do not have any
passport to prove their parentage
or nationality.
“We saw her crying when
she came out from the Indian
Embassy. And we even witnessed
some officials humiliating her,
pointing out the ignorance of her
parents, even though the High
Court gave a favourable ruling in
favour of her case,” said Nabilah.

Presently, the Facebook page
has more than 600 likes.
The administrator and visitors
jointly host debates over the
newspaper reports published on
Ruksana and other similar cases.
According to the administrator,
the well-wishers of Ruksana try to
console her because of her sad fate.
“Most of her classmates are
now married and are leading a
comfortable life. We know that
Ruksana has many aspirations
and all those are just caught up
in the files at the Embassy or
the Ministry of Home Affairs in
India,” stated Nabilah.
Meanwhile, Stanley John,
Ruksana’s friend, pointed out
the need of spreading the issue
using the powerful tool called the
‘social media.’
“The life of Ruksana is
mentioned
chronologically
in the Facebook page. Initially
many supported Ruksana,
knowing about her story. Few
of them even said that they are
ready to accompany her when
she goes to the Indian Embassy.
But later, some withdrew their
help in the false belief that the
Embassy would confiscate their
passport too”, said Mr. Stanley.
There are also a few people,
who asked Ruksana to stop
fighting or asking for a passport
and just live a peaceful life by
marrying a Bahraini in
order to solve her
problem.

Twenty-six-year-old Taqi

with a knife during a fight
which broke out on October

Mr. Saleh’s wife took

Two of the defendants,
both Egyptians, aged 35

premeditated murder for
their alleged direct link

third co-defendant is a
Bahraini policeman, who
was accused of concealing
crucial information from
authorities and not reporting
the murder. The policeman earlier
told prosecutors that he
did not report the incident
to authorities because he
was drinking alcohol and
watching football at the time.
One of the alleged killers
was said to have called him

However, the policeman’s

because he was at home under
the influence of alcohol.
The three men are all

Readers’ VIEW
Congrats to Bahrain Cancer Society!
Dear sir,
The world is full of good and generous
people, as we have witnessed through the
huge success of the ‘Run, Walk 4 Cancer’
event, which was organised by the Bahrain
Cancer Society (BSC).
The charity event raised the amount of
BD15,000 that would be used for the benefit
of cancer patients and spreading awareness
about the deadly disease.
People from all walks of life came to the
event to show their support to the project
and also give financial assistance to the great
cause.
Even the organisers did not expect the huge
turnout of participants and also the amount
that they have collected at the end of the
event.
This only shows that people have become
more aware now of cancer and what it does
to the patient and his or her family.
We need to organise more events like this in
order to spread awareness and teach people
that cancer could be treated at an early stage
if only, we are able to detect it properly.
I would like to congratulate the BSC
for organising such a wonderful and
enlightening event.
More power to you and God bless you all!

What happened to our
youths?
Dear sir,
The news of the killing of
Abdulaziz Al Jodar, also known
as Abu Qutyba Al Bahraini
while fighting with the Islamic
State (IS) against ‘Rafdha’ , a
term used by extremists to
describe ‘Shia’ fighters sent
shockwaves to many people
in our country.
It was only recently that
another young Bahraini,
Ibrahim Al Awadhi, died while
fighting with the IS, in an
unnecessary and useless war.
After reading the news, I could
not help but ask myself, “What
happened to our youths? Why
are they fighting the war of
IS? Why do they give up their
lives for a useless war?
Obviously, the IS has
succeeded in convincing
the youths that the path of
terrorism is the only way to
achieve their goals.
They have misled many of our
youths and enticed them to
leave their own country to
join the IS war against those
whose only goal is to spread
peace around the globe.
The ‘IS’ is the biggest threat in
the world today and is leading
many young people to their
graves early.
The world should join hands
in order to stop the IS from
continuing to mislead our
youth, so that they could serve
their own country, instead
of giving up their lives for a
violent and useless cause,
engineered by the IS.

Malala deserves the ‘Nobel Peace Prize’
Dear sir,
I was delighted to read
in your newspaper, DT

Yousafzai shared the
‘Nobel Peace Prize’ with
Indian anti-child labour
activist Kailash Satyarthi.
Malala has become the
youngest ever Nobel
laureate and she has
brought great pride, not
only to her country but
more importantly, to the
children of the world.
Malala deserves this
accolade for all the
sacrifices
she
had
experienced, just to fight
for the rights of children
to education, not only in
her own country but also
around the globe.
Her courage has become
a source of inspiration,
not only to children and
people in Pakistan but to
people all over the world.
Her campaign, the Nobel
Committee said, has
been carried out ‘under
the most dangerous
circumstances.’
It also added that
through her struggle, she
has become a leading
spokesperson for girls’
rights to education.
Truly, Malala deserves
to win the Nobel Peace
Prize. We need more
young people like her
who are always thinking
for the good of all and
not for the promotion of

I
n a dramatic twist, a young
Bahraini jihadist, whose fellow

Abdulaziz Al Jodar, 19, fighting

ne of my favourite people in British
history is a Scotsman called Arthur
Balfour who was a Tory prime minister from
1902 to 1905.
In spite of all his family connections he was
remarkably unsuccessful as a politician.
Both his father and grandfather were
members of parliaments and he succeeded his
uncle Lord Salisbury to Number 10 Downing
Street.
In terms of political success he rose to
prominence by suppressing agrarian unrest
in Ireland through punitive action followed
by getting Britain involved in the Boer War
which turned out to the last conflict Britain
really lost until we claim we never really lost
in Suez.
His place in history is largely down to being
the guy who penned The Balfour Declaration
which resulted in the setting up of the Israeli
state.
All in all not much of a curriculum vitae.
But there are two things I like about him.
The first is that when he inherited the
title of Lord Balfour he became one of the
wealthiest people in the UK, if not the world.
By the time he died he had spent all of this
fortune.
The second thing, which I think is great, is
that as a second rate philosopher he originated
an argument against believing that human
reason could determine truth epitomised by
a remark attributed to him: “Nothing matters
very much and few things matter at all”.
That may well explain his failure as a prime
minister.
No politician would agree to those
sentiments these days although it appears that
the British media have recently embraced this
view of reality.
At a time when we have come close to
seeing the end of the United Kingdom, when
there is a new war developing in the Middle
East and in Ukraine and an outbreak of a
killer disease called Ebola that looks as though
it could affect the world the newspapers over
here are obsessed with autobiography two
sportsmen.
I have never been a big fan of cricket
but apparently the words of wisdom from a
former England cricket captain called Kevin
Pietersen is what everyone wants to read
about.
Cricket has always been a mystery to me.
Why anyone should regard a game that
lasts five days and can still end in a draw as
entertaining and competitive is beyond me.
Why England, whom I believe invented the
game and consider themselves good at it need
to have a South African captain also leaves
me a bit cold.
But why anyone should be interested in
a book in which he largely trashes his fellow
players’ beggars belief.
By all accounts he was quite good at hitting
the ball with a bat in his heyday and was
no slouch at throwing the ball at opposing
batsmen.
But why his views on the shortcomings
of his fellow team mates should be filling
column inches in the press seems somewhat
questionable to me.
The other guy who has moved from the
sports pages to the news pages of down
market tabloids is Roy Keane.
You may have missed the latest exclusives
on this ‘has been’ footballer but apparently
what everyone in Britain really, really wanted
to know this week is that Roy had shaved off
his beard.
Last week it was the launch of his latest
autobiography where he criticises famous
football managers.
Now to be fair to Mr Keane he was a very
talented and famous football player rather a
long time ago.
“Keane was a dominating central
midfielder noted for his aggressive and highly
competitive style of play, an attitude that
helped him excel as captain of Manchester
United from 1997 until his departure in 2005,
having joined the club in 1993,” I read the
other day.
In fact Keane was one of those highly
talented thugs who occasionally turn up on
football parks.
He could play the game extremely well,
but is more likely to be remembered in a
sport which has spawned many thugs who
have survived on very little talent but a lot of
aggression.
The last time he hit the headlines was
probably back in 2002 when he was sent
home from the World Cup in spite of being
the captain of the Republic of Ireland when
the team were doing rather well.
His problem was that he wanted to tell
the manager how to do his job.
Now in his autobiography he has
gone out of his way to criticise managers
including Alex Ferguson, whom he played
for for most of his career, and Chelsea
manager Jose Mourinho.
Now Mr Ferguson is undoubtedly the
most successful football manager in the
history of British football and possibly the
greatest manager the world game has ever
seen.
Mr Mourinho, whose team is currently
number one in England, is possibly the
greatest manager since Mr Ferguson retired.
Mr Keane, and few people would disagree
with this, was a far better player than either
of these gentlemen.
But in the management stakes he has
made his name as a failure and an also run.
With no one else wanting him he is
currently an assistant manager with the
Republic of Ireland and Aston Villa, neither
of whom are exactly setting the heather on
fire in the global soccer firmament.
In spite of all his experience on the field
his success rate in management in zilch.
Keane, who is now 43, looks to be
coming to the end of his managerial career.
Ferguson had won the European Cup
winners Cup and Mourinho the UEFA and
European Cup when they were younger
than that.
The point to this is that the press over
hear believe the thoughts of two former
stars matter.
It would appear that the press now look
at Lord Belfour’s summation ‘Nothing
matters very much and few things matter at
all’ and chose to think the latter part of that
philosophical argument is news.

‘Progress’ in pressing
Turkey to join IS fight
Washington
The United States has
reported “progress” in pressing Turkey to participate in
the fight against the Islamic
State group, noting a pledge
from Ankara to train and
equip moderate Syrian rebels.
The head of the US-led
coalition, retired general
John Allen, and US pointman on Iraq, Brett McGurk,
completed a two-day visit in
Turkey to press the NATO ally
to engage militarily against
the jihadist group that has
taken over a wide swath of
Syria and Iraq.
Washington had been
frustrated over Ankara’s
reticence to commit its wellequipped and well-trained
forces in the fight against the

IS executes
four women
Baghdad
he Islamic State group
has executed at least four
women, including two doctors
and a politician, in their
northern Iraq strongholds this
month, relatives and rights
activists said yesterday.
In the IS hub of Mosul, the
jihadists executed three women
on Wednesday including two
doctors, Hanaa Edwar, a human
rights activist who heads the
Al-Amal organisation, said.
A medical source in Mosul
confirmed their deaths and
named the two doctors as Maha
Sabhan and Lamia Ismail. The
third woman was a law graduate.
On October 5, Iman
Mohammed Yunus, a former
Sunni parliamentarian from
the Iraq Turkmen Front in the
city of Tal Afar, farther west
towards the Syrian border, was
also executed.
“They took her from her
home last month and called her
family this week to say that she
had been executed,” said Ali
al-Bayati, who runs a foundation
supporting the rights of Iraq’s
Turkmen minority.
“Then they dumped her body
in a water well outside Tal Afar,”
he said.
According to Edwar, who
T
confirmed Yunus’ execution, at
least four other women were
executed by IS militants in the
Mosul area in recent weeks.
Among them was a former
candidate for the local council
and an academic.
“Women are easy targets
for them. Many of the rights
activists from Mosul ran away
but some of the women among
them had to stay with their
children,” Edwar said.
IS militants have controlled
Mosul since June 10, the
second day of a major offensive
that saw jihadist fighters seize
swathes of land in five Iraqi
provinces.
They have used the city,
Iraq’s second largest, as a de
facto capital for the Iraqi half
of the “caliphate” which their
leadership proclaimed in June
and also includes large parts
of Syria.
“After going after the ethnic
and religious minorities,
they are now hunting down
Sunni members of civil
society groups and anyone
remotely connected with the
government,” Edwar said.
She said IS was probably
trying to sow maximum fear
among the population by openly
targeting women. (AFP)

But, I’ve learnt that it needs to be as

stand out from the crowd.
Here are a few ‘must have’ separates in your
wardrobe to step out in style.
1. A bright printed sheath dress not only shouts
out trendy, but also ensures you make heads turn.
Keep in mind to pick a dark colour that’s apt for the
occasion and not too loud.
2. A backless number is perfect for summer weddings. Learn to show skin in moderation so ensure
the dress covers the entire bodice and is only open
at the back.
3. Skirts in luxurious fabrics like silk or satin and
interesting embroidery adds texture and is great
when paired with solid coloured blouses.
4. If you’re not the one to wear dresses and want
a more androgynous look, opt for sleek jumpsuits or
pant suits instead. Satin and sequinned fabrics will
amplify the style and make it more party- appropriate.

O
ne thing everyone knows
about me is that I am crazy
about ‘natural oils.’
I have been using argan oil
(also called the ‘miracle oil’ and
‘liquid gold’) for almost six years
now. It has been named that for
a reason.
Argan oil has never disappointed me. What I love about
this ‘liquid gold’ is that it is well
known for its amazing properties that are beneficial for both
hair and skin.
It is rich in nutrients like fatty
acids and vitamin E! Argan oil
can be used in many different
ways and for numerous reasons.
Argan oil can be used as a
skin moisturizer, to hydrate and
soften the skin.
Because of its high content of
Vitamin E and fatty acids, it is the
best product to naturally enhance
your skin. It is amazing and gets
absorbed easily into the skin.
Argan oil is also great as a hair
moisturizer. It has been proven
that this oil makes the hair softer
and shinier. It can help treat split
ends and frizzy hair!
Professional beautician and
make-up artist Laila Bukanan
recommends argan oil, also
known as ‘liquid gold’ to
women who want to have
beautiful skin and hair. Read
on to find out why she is all
praises for ‘argan oil…’
Using argan oil as hair mask
once a week can improve the texture and shine of your hair.
Treating dry skin conditions
is another benefit of argan oil.
People suffering from very dry
skin and eczema can find this oil
to be extremely beneficial.
The vitamin E and fatty acids
are amazing for repairing damaged skin while providing it with
nutrients to now only renew the
skin but also prevent further dryness and irritation that might
occur. It can be applied directly
to the affected area.
Stretch marks can be a
huge issue for lots or pregnant

Shuchi Nagori, answers DT News’ readers queries
on healthy living.
1. Kindly provide feedback on what is the
difference between food allergies and food intolerance. Which is more serious and
should be taken care of, thanksNermin M.
Dr. Nagori: Food allergy
causes an immune system
reaction, when it sees food as
an invader. It affects numerous organs and causes a range
of symptoms, which can vary from
mild itching/hives of the skin to severe/life-threatening breathing difficulties/drop in blood pressure. Usually it comes suddenly, even a small
amount of food can trigger and happens every
time you eat.
Food intolerance symptoms are generally less
serious and mostly limited to digestive system.
They come gradually and occurs only when you
eat lot of food. Symptoms of food intolerance
can include nausea, cramps, abdominal pain,
diarrhoea, irritability, nervousness, or headaches.
Food allergies can cause symptoms like breathing
problems, hoarseness, vomiting and hives. Food
allergy is much more serious than food intolerance.

nutrients important for physiological functions and proper growth. Foods that help
children are nuts, beans, eggs, fish, dairy products,
grains and pulses. Children need to gain adequate
weight and height with strong immune system and
energy. Children should be active and provided
with proper healthy diet at intervals for proper

vegan diet.
3. Is it enough to get my daily intake of vitamins and minerals from the food I consume or
should I be taking vitamin pills and supplements
too?- Atika (37 yrs. old).
Dr. Nagori: Yes, you can get the daily requirement of vitamins and minerals
from balanced food that you
consume. Supplements are
not a substitute for a healthy
diet. It can be challenging to
get adequate nutrients if dieting/avoiding dairy products.
It’s always better to consume
fresh fruits and vegetables rather
than
vitamin pills/supplements. Fruits and vegetables
contain
lots of phytochemicals along with a
variety of micronutrients, anti-oxidants and essential fibers, which provide greater nutrition, prevent
heart disease, cancer, diabetes, etc. Some nutrientrich foods with relatively less calories are avocados,
spinach, bell peppers, green leafy vegetables, low
fat yogurt, seeds (pumpkin/flax/sunflower), nuts
especially almonds, grains, lentils, oranges, carrots.

KALI-FICATION
OF THE BARBIE
A brush with philosophy
T.S.Sreenivasa
Raghavan/DTNN
M
an is the only animal,
in this universe, who
carries multiple identities.
His voyage into the world
of identity, in fact, starts
with his name. Then, as
time passes, he takes pride
in the identity of his caste,
creed, colour, religion and
nationality to mention a few.
Man’s penchant for
identity does not stop there.
He even gets intoxicated with
his professional identity.
Someone is a doctor,
someone else is an engineer,
there are also others who
flash and flush, because,
they are either astronauts or
scientists! Man is still not
satisfied. He continues to
look for additional identities!
Why am I harping on
the issue of identity now?
Is it because man despite
the manifold labels by which
he markets himself is still
suffering from an acute
identity crisis? I have to
be candid here and I have
no hesitation to say that my
answer is in the affirmative.
Otherwise, how would
you account for the recent
controversy
revolving
around the Kali-fication of
Barbie? Before dwelling into
the issue further, we need
to understand the meaning
of both Kali and Barbie.
Hindus
venerate
Kali – the
consort
of Lord
S h i v a
and the
Goddess
o
f
Destruction.
The word Kali, in fact,
comes from Sanskrit, which
literally means the black one.
The origin of Kali could
also be traced to kal, again
in Sanskrit, meaning, time:
the destroyer. Hence, the
Goddess is aptly portrayed
as a black-skinned and
blood-smeared
wearing
a necklace of skulls and a
girdle of snakes!
If Kali symbolises the
triumph of good over evil,
Barbie is a brand of doll made
by Mattel representing a
slim, shapely young woman,
especially one
with blonde
hair, blue eyes
and fair skin.
When used as
noun
Barbie
means, especially a
young woman, perceived
as blandly attractive and
vacuous.
It is here the Kali-fication
of Barbie fuelled all the
brouhaha in the world
anguishing
innumerable
Barbie fans and angering
devout Hindus. The Barbie
fans got upset, because,
they could not simply bear
the sight of their otherwise
beautiful doll converted into
a cannibalistic posture.
The Hindus fumed and
fretted, because, they felt the
Argentine artists Marianela
Perelli and Pool Paolini
resorted to a cheap publicity
stunt by giving Barbie the
Kali makeover. However,
there have also been
others who defended the
artistic freedom, unwilling
to embrace the path of
extremism.
They cited that the
Argentine
artists
had
made 33 dolls representing
figures from Islam, Judaism,
Christianity and Hinduism
for exhibition in a Buenos
Aires Gallery Show called
“Barbie,
The
Plastic
Religion.” So, they felt,
neither the Barbie fans nor
the Hindus
should get
unsettled
by
the
new-lookBarbie.
Be that
as it may, it
is my firm
belief that
everything
in this world
is
interchangeable
including
Barbie the
doll and Kali
the idol. If
you
have
a
doubt,
then take a
look at the
life of Adolf
Hitler, the man who killed
thousands even while
adoring children!
That
confirms our mind is home
to two persons, nay myriad!
W.Somerset Maugham
puts it better: “There are
times when I look over
the various parts of my
character with perplexity.
I recognise that I am made
up of several persons and
that the person that at the
moment has the upper hand
will inevitably give place to
another. But, which is the
real one? All of them or
none?”
No one could have explained
better man’s identity crisis.
So, it is not the varied
reactions
in
support
a n d
against
the Barbie
conundrum
that
surprise me;
it is also not
the exercise
of the artistic
freedom that
went behind
the Barbie
re-creation.
Instead, what
stuns me is the
man’s obsession
with identity!
It
would
not
be
an
exaggeration to
say that man today
is
threatened
by
intellectual
pauperdom. It
bestows
him
with an identity
that
emanates
from inanimate
objects to which
he clutches tightly
like a simpleton. But,
the man does not
realise that he has
virtually become the
prisoner of a doll!

The Maze runner
13
A fresh approach
Aravind Deepak/ DTNN
T
he Maze Runner brings
to light the story of how
a sixteen year old, sans any
memory of identification lest
for his name, finds himself
entrapped in a community
of boys much like him, on an
expanse of grass surrounded on
all four sides by a towering,
colossal, maze.
Once there, the protagonists’
aim becomes to find a purpose
and reason for his presence,
and that of everyone else’s, in
the seemingly experimental
grounds that seem to harbour
no meaning in its own
indifferent right.
A test of faith and a belief
in the unknown is contrived
out of desperation, forming
interesting spans of observation
for the audience to root
themselves in.
Human survival instincts,
made all the more vigorous
pertaining to its execution by
young adults, are portrayed in
a fresh, past paced stretch of
perspective.
The Maze Runner appeals
most to the gamer in each of
us, wherein the superlative
landscapes and arcane plots
incite thrilling awe, also making it
the sole appreciative subjunctive
for letting one be caught up in
the web of numerous interesting
alternatives.
It is a dream scape for
science fiction enthusiasts, for
the movie’s mysticism shrouds
the obvious factors and allows
for the interjection of indefinite
entities to be apprehensive of,
letting the viewer purge in the
luxury of their imaginative
hopes for the movie’s characters.
Escapist tendencies meet
their most sought after sojourns
of bliss during the film’s run
time, for they are allowed an
insight into scenarios that are
completely out of the grasp of
realities drying trait.
The stronghold of the film
lies in its potential to stay
insatiable over the metaphorical
degrees to which its plot can be
sieved through.
The functioning of society
under experimental constraints,
that which almost all fields of
life have come to philosophise,
gets a significant cinematic
approach here. Curiosity
remains, but never overstays its
welcome when faced with the
adrenaline of the moment.
The visual effects were
splendid, which in further
cohesion with excellently precise
editing and cinematographic
eccentricity blended in to move
the viewer to the edges of their
seats during the sequences of
high ended action.
Also, Dylan O’Brian’s body
language spoke in exceeding
quality to his acting, giving
strength to scenes where
running had a beauty and
gripping grace of its own.
The casting has been done
well, giving each character
their fair share of existential
significance. With respect to
that, Aml Ameen and Will
Poulter proved their skills with
their depths of character while
Kaya Scodelario presented
herself with a pleasingly
naturalist stint at acting.
Towards the end, the story
does falter in its integrity and
opens up for certain logical errs
in comparison with what it was
molded up to be.
A sense of deflation in
expectations is what one is left
with, with the benevolence
and power that guided the film
through till then seeming to fit in
the wrong hands altogether. The
film disappoints in the resultant
view of things, but leaves us in the
hope of better endings to come
through its sequels.
The maze incorporates
dangers aplenty yet taunts one
with infinite hope. It forms the
forbidden arena to be tackled
only by those who seem worthy,
an affair that needs risking
everything for the sake of
promising changes.
This movie will interest those
who love the immense flexibility
of unnatural concepts and basks
in the enticement which science
fiction delivers.

Dreams that show a rush of colours, do you know
whether they hold any particular meaning. I sometimes
have this dream where I feel like I’m in a maze and
there are many colours changing, very bright and
colourful. I’m curious as to why do such occurrences
happen and I can never associate them with anything.
Kindly help me in interpreting them. Thanks
I am 27-year-old mother of two young kids, residing
away from my home country since I was born. I had
lived in many places in the Middle East. DT News readers who would like to have their
dreams decoded into meanings can send their dream
description, background information (if applicable)
and additional details (gender, personal status, age
group and work title) to news@dt.bh. Names will not
be revealed and the identities will be kept confidential.
c
Nausheen: Colours in dreams represent
our emotional states and add a greater
emotional significance to our dreams.
Depending on our culture, colours
can have very different meanings and
also personal associations. These may
be positive or negative, or somewhere in
between. A colour does not have any intrinsic
meaning of its own, it has only the meaning
we give to it. So the most important
thing to do is to find out what your own
interpretation of each colour is. The
colours may represent something in you,
for example, an aspect of your personality
or it may be something that you search that
is represented by the colour. I would suggest keeping a dream diary
and as you work with your dreams over
time, you may start to notice when colours
re-appear. Once you notice your own
patterns, you can start to recognise the
unique messages your dreams are giving
you, and develop an understanding of your
own dreams.
Dreaming of a maze is a symbol of
frustration, indecision, confusion and
a lack of direction in one’s life. It may
represent an overwhelming situation in your
life.
In order to understand your dream try to
ask yourself the following questions:
What feelings do these colours produce in you?
What do these colours remind you of?
Where in your life are these colours missing?
What other things in your life that are important
to you are also these colours?
How did you feel in connection to being in the
maze?

Bahrain’s eGovernment
Authority CEO Mohammed
Ali Al Qaed on the sidelines
of the launch of the Arabic
version of the United Nations
eGovernment Survey 2014 in
Bahrain yesterday.
He shared the challenges
and the process followed by his
team in turning the country
into a better eGovernment
hub.
UN eGovernment Survey
2014 has ranked Bahrain
seventh on the Online
Services Index and rank 18
worldwide in eGovernment
Readiness Index and first
among the Arab and Middle
East countries.
Here is an excerpt
from the exclusive
interview with eGA CEO
Mohammed Ali Al Qaed.
DT News: What was the
biggest challenge you faced?
CEO: None of the
initiatives we are working
with or we deliver are owned
by eGovernment, but by other
departments. The challenge is,
we have to coordinate with
people who are not reporting
to me directly, neither I
have full control over them.
They have their own
priorities, thus it is
a big challenge to
coordinate the
effort and to
give a good
service.
UN eGovernment Survey 2014 has ranked Bahrain
seventh on the Online Services Index and rank 18
worldwide in eGovernment Readiness Index and first
among the Arab and Middle East countries.
eGovernment is not something
about which I can write policy
or re-engineer policy, I have to
coordinate. It is about things
under other departments.
DT News: How
did
you
overcome
that,
what
was
your
strategy?
CEO: The support we got
from the supreme
committee
under
the
leadership of Deputy Prime
Minister Shaikh Mohammed
bin Mubarak Al Khalifa was
excellent; we report to them
and the ministry. We created
working groups that were
there in Bahrain since day
one. We have three layers of
working groups which include
Undersecretaries, Directors and in director level, we have
IT and business, and finally
the technical people.
People out there in
the front, we have
committees with
them, we consult
with them, we
try to engage
them, we made
them part of
the
change
management.
And, we gave
education,
training
and
DT News: You have to keep
running?
CEO: Of course, of course.
We have to improve our
ranking and the maturity levels.
That requires a lot of effort.
organised workshops for the
employees.
DT News: Are all these
people
from
different
departments?
CEO: Yes, hundreds of
government employees are
working for eGovernment, but
from different departments.
That was a challenge.
DT News: What is your
team size?
CEO: 100 people work
for eGovernment, taking
care of admin, finance and
coordination.
DT News: 100 people
dedicated for the project?
CEO: Yes, Not a big
number.
DT News: Where you think
Bahrain can improve?
CEO: Being in top ten,
I don’t think we have an
easy target. It is a moving
target. Actually, in the
UN
eGovernment
survey, there were some
countries in the top ten,
which had slipped to
the 20s. To retain our
ranking, we have to
work hard.
DT News: That can be
seen in the rankings Bahrain
received, the effort. So, what
other countries can learn from
Bahrain and its achievement?
CEO: We have a programme.
When we hosted the UN
event in Bahrain, most of the
countries had selected Bahrain
as the country to learn from.
UN organised fully-funded
visits for 20 government
employees from 14 countries so
that they could learn from the
Bahrain experience.
We had full-week intensive
programmes. The participants
wanted to learn from Bahrain
in 28 areas of improvement.
Presentations of 20 to 40
minutes and one-on-one
meeting were conducted.
The entire programme was
conducted by Bahrainis.
Since the programme was
a success, I heard from UN
recently that, most of the
countries wanted Bahrain to
conduct training.
We might have another
programme in the coming
months, probably as early as
2015.

- Mr. Honeck
In an exclusive interview with DT News,
the Artistic Director of the Orchestra Rainer
Honeck, said music was the universal
language of co-existence.
“Even if a musician, doesn’t seem to get
along with another on the personal level, when both of them sit
on the same musical platform, all of these conflicts become vague
as music defines every moment and leads them to work together,”
he said.
Sharing how the two orchestra giants performed together for the
first time in 2005 when famed English conductor Sir Simon Rattle
wanted to see them put their rivalry aside and unite their musical
geniuses,
Mr. Honeck said, “They were the top players in the classical
music genre and when Vienna’s beautiful, charming and well-read
sounds were combined with the virtuosic and high skills playing of
Berlin, an explosive magic was created. We decided to prolong the
idea and the Chamber Orchestra Vienna Berlin was born.”
The group has been playing worldwide, taking in the culture
and ambiance of the different countries where it creates music and

English
‘Graveyard’ vs ‘cemetery’
T
hough these two words are used
interchangeably to refer to a place
where people are buried, there is a
subtle difference in meaning between
the two.
‘Graveyard’ is the older of the two
terms, and it is mostly used to refer
to a burial ground, which adjoins a
church.
In the old days, people were buried
close to the church; the nobles and
the rich, in fact, were sometimes
buried in crypts beneath the church.
With the increase in population,
the old graveyards became full and
new burial sites, called ‘cemeteries’,
came up a little away from the town/
city.
The word ‘cemetery’ comes from
the Greek ‘koimeterion’ meaning
‘dormitory, resting place’. It was seen
as a person’s final resting place; unlike
a graveyard, a cemetery does not
adjoin a church.
People are buried in graveyards; in
a cemetery, it is possible to bury an
individual’s ashes as well.

LI PLEDGES
INNOVATION
Sino-German summit
China’s Premier Li Keqiang (right) shakes hands with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier
after their speeches at the closing lunch of Sino-German summit.
Hamburg
hina’s Premier Li Keqiang
said yesterday that the
world’s second-biggest economy must open further to harness the innovative and creative
talents of its 1.3 billion people.
After three decades of reforms,
China -- often called the world’s
manufacturing workshop -had launched administrative
and market reforms “to boost
creation and innovation”, he
said on a visit to Germany.
“What we hope is to incentivise 1.3 billion people, including 800-900 million workers,
to mobilise their innovation
capability and creativity so that
everyone will have an opportu-
nity to make great accomplishments,” he said. This would
“turn our dividend of population into a dividend of talents”.
Li was speaking at a business
forum on the first country stop
of a week-long Europe tour,
a day after Berlin and Beijing
signed a range of business deals
and pledged to deepen links
and boost trade that last year
topped 140 billion euros ($177
billion). The premier delivered
his speech in the northern port
of Hamburg, a European base
for 500 Chinese companies and
the gateway for half of Germany’s annual trade with China,
equating to 2.7 million shipping containers last year. Li re-

was sworn in yesterday after
four months of horsetrading with francophone liberal
leader Charles Michel becoming the country’s youngest
prime minister since 1840.
For the first time a coalition
of four parties -- three Dutchspeaking, including the nationalist New Flemish Alliance (NVA), and one French-speaking
-- will rule the linguistically divided country together. Michel,
38, struck a deal Tuesday to
push through major economic
and social reforms, including
pushing back the retirement
age from 65 to 67 by 2030.
The coalition cuts the outgoing Socialists from power
for the first time in a quarter
of a century. Socialist premier
Elio Di Rupo’s resignation was
officially accepted earlier in
the day. “I swear loyalty to the
King, to obey the constitution and the laws of the Belgian people,” the 18 members
of the cabinet swore one after
the other in front of King Phillippe, with Michel taking the
oath of office in French, Dutch
and the country’s third official
language, German.

and recovery of the world economy”, predicting GDP growth
of about 7.5 percent this year,
despite multiple global crises.
Just as important for China,
he said, was job creation, raising household incomes and the
“war against pollution”.
During Li’s visit foreign
companies operating in China
again voiced long-standing
complaints about unfair market
access, including being blocked
from public tenders and having to form local joint ventures. The premier said China
must integrate further with
its economic partners, protect
intellectual property rights,
enforce fair business rules and
create “a level playing field”
under government oversight.
“China needs to learn from
other countries as well as the
fine achievements of human
civilisation, and must combine
these with China’s own national
conditions, so that China will
become a (hotbed) for creation
and will be a huge market for
the world,” he said.
Li said, China “must rely on
innovative development, and
we cannot do this without the
rest of the world. The world
also needs China to achieve
prosperity.” He stressed that for
the Chinese economy “there
will not be a hard landing, as
suggested by some media”.He
added that “economic development is not a sprint, instead
it is a long-distance race that
never ends... there should be a
certain speed but more importantly we need perseverence
and stamina.”

Tuesday on suspicion of planning a terrorist act. “In London
we’re very, very vigilant and
very, very concerned,” Johnson
told The Daily Telegraph. “Every day -- as you saw recently,
we had to raise the threat level
-- every day the security services are involved in thousands
of operations. There are probably in the low thousands of
people that we are monitoring
in London.”
Britain’s terrorism threat level was raised to “severe” in August, the second-highest, which
means that an attack is thought
to be “highly likely”. Intelligence services say the threat
comes primarily from the Islamic State (IS) group and al-
Qaeda. On Friday, police across
Britain were also warned by the
top officer in charge of counterterrorism, Assistant Commissioner Mark Rowley.
“The threat level to police officers and staff has been heightened, but we are used to confronting risk and danger, this
is what we do on a daily basis,
and we are well trained,” he
said. The government believes
that around 500 people have
travelled from Britain and are
fighting in Iraq and Syria. Johnson said that of these, “we think
a third, maybe more -- maybe
half -- come from the London
area”. “If and when they come
back, we have a real job to deal

Germany to help Malawi probe
‘Cashgate’ scandal
Blantyre
ermany, one of the
countries that suspended aid to Malawi after
a massive public sector graft
scandal, has granted the impoverished southern African
nation $25 million to conduct an audit into the fraud,
a diplomat said yesterday.
“The German-funded audit is to quantify the amount
misappropriated over the
period 2009-2013,” Katrin
Pfeiffer, head of development cooperation at the
G
German embassy, said in a
statement. Last year, Malawi uncovered a corruption
ring involving government
officials, in which at least
$30 million was swindled
from state coffers, according to an audit already
done by British auditors.
The scandal, dubbed
“Cashgate”, prompted foreign donors -- who provide
around 40 percent of Malawi’s budget -- to pull the
plug on aid of around $150
million (118 million euros).

Greek PM narrowly wins parliamentary confidence vote
Athens

Prime
Minister Antonis Samaras
late Friday won a parliamentary
confidence
vote, which he called in a
bid to rally support, but
which provided him with
only a narrow majority.
The conservative prime
minister secured the support of 155 of the 300 elected
deputies, with not a single
independent or opposition
member backing him. Out of
the 288 deputies who voted,
131 opposed the confidence
motion and two abstained.
The result throws into doubt
the government’s ability to
pull together the 180 parliamentary votes needed to elect
the next Greek president next
February.
If it fails to do so then a
general election will have

Harvard student has been charged in a bomb hoax that
forced the elite US university to evacuate four buildings,
call in police and disrupt final exams, prosecutors said yesterday. Eldo Kim, 21, is accused of emailing university police
as well as the student-run newspaper last year, with a subject
line that read “bombs placed around campus,” according to
a statement from United States Attorney Carmen Ortiz. But
he may never see a trial, as the government has asked for an
18-month deferral while Kim completes a “pretrial diversion program” that will include “home confinement for four
months, payment of restitution to agencies that responded to
Kim’s bomb hoax, and 750 hours of community service. “Kim
has also agreed to make a public apology,” the statement said.
If Kim abides by these terms, he will not be prosecuted.

London
rince William’s wife Kate is scheduled to welcome Singaporean President Tony Tan to Britain later this month,
Buckingham Palace said yesterday, in her first engagement
since falling victim to severe morning sickness. Kate and William are set to give Tan a formal welcome to Britain when
he begins a state visit on October 21, the palace said. While
it is intended that the Duchess of Cambridge takes part, her
attendance will be reviewed closer to the time in light of her
condition. The royal couple are to greet the president and his
wife at a London hotel and then travel with them to the Horse
Guards Parade ground, where Tan will receive a full ceremonial welcome. Kate, who is expecting her second child, has
once again been suffering hyperemesis gravidarum, which
she experienced during her pregnancy with Prince George.

wo Taiwanese scientists died and 43 other people were
rescued when a marine research ship sank off Taiwan after hitting a reef, coastguard officials said yesterday. Emergency treatment failed to revive the pair after the vessel “Ocean
Researcher V”, carrying 27 researchers and 18 crew members, sank off the Penghu islands on Friday, officials said. The
2,700-tonne ship began to take on water after it ran into a reef
and lost power. Those on board rushed to life rafts, but the
rubber boats were capsized by powerful winds and waves, officials said. The ship, which cost Tw$1.5 billion ($500 million)
and was launched in 2012, sank around 1300 GMT.The coastguard and the navy dispatched a dozen vessels and helicopters
in the rescue, officials said. The ship departed from a port in
southern Tainan city on Thursday for an eight-day marine
research expedition commissioned by the government and
jointly conducted by several universities. It was heading to
Penghu to take shelter from the bad weather.

rrests, harassment, a clampdown on free speech: with less
than a year before elections in Burundi, critics say the
government is doing all it can clamp down on political challengers. Opposition figure Leonce Ngendakumana should
know. The president of the Front for Democracy (Frodebu)
party was sentenced this month to a year in jail for slander,
after what he calls a “political trial” designed to remove him
from the running ahead of the June 2015 polls. President
Pierre Nkurunziza is “working to destroy the opposition, and
he is doing it well,” he said. “All credible opponents are either
in exile, have been prosecuted, or have been driven out from
their parties,” said Ngendakumana, who is also head of the
main coalition opposition Democratic Alliance for Change
(ADC). Burundi, a small nation in Africa’s Great Lakes region, emerged in 2006 from a brutal 13-year civil war, but its
political climate remains fractious ahead of presidential polls

ozambicans go to the polls on Wednesday as the impoverished and long strife-torn country stands on the cusp
of reaping vast oil and gas wealth. Frelimo, a once Marxist-Leninist party that has ruled since independence from Portugal
in 1975, is almost certain to win. But it will emerge with a new
president at the helm and, in all likelihood, a lower margin of
victory. The party’s nominee is little-known Filipe Nyusi, 55,
who would be Mozambique’s first post-colonial leader with
no liberation war credentials. Nyusi would replace his mentor and outgoing president Armando Guebuza, 71, whose
term in office was marked by rapid economic expansion. The
southern African nation is forecast to see its gross domestic
product expand by 8.3 percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund. But it has been growth that has
done little to curb ingrained poverty. The lack of improvement in living standards for ordinary Mozambicans has some
calling for change.

fishing villages as it braced for
Cyclone Hudhud barrelling towards its east coast, officials said.
The states of Andhra Pradesh
and Orissa in the southeast
were on high alert for what the
weather office described as a
“very severe cyclonic storm” due
to make landfall today. Many
thousands from fishing villages
across five districts in northeast
Andhra Pradesh living in flimsy
housing were among the first to
be moved to safer, concrete relief
shelters, officials said. The numbers of evacuees were expected
to swell.
“We are ready to evacuate
400,000 people, but that will
depend on the amount of rainfall and how it affects low-lying
areas,” said Arvind Kumar, an
senior official from Andhra
Pradesh, overseeing the relief efforts. Cyclone Hudhud was expected to pound the coast with
winds of at least 190 kilometres
(118 miles) an hour, accompanied by torrential rains, accord-

ing to the Indian weather office.
The storm was expected to make
landfall before lunchtime in Visakhapatnam, a city in northern
Andhra Pradesh, state officials
said.
A few thousand had been
moved to cyclone shelters with
community kitchens and water
supply. The shifting of endangered Bonda tribals had also begun from their age-old habitats
in the Bonda Hills in Orissa’s
Malkangiri district, which was
expected to be hard hit by the
storm. But some among the
tribal group which numbers a
total of 7,000 were reluctant to
move as they had never left the
area, the Press Trust of India
(PTI) said. Orissa legislature
member Dambaru Sisa, who belongs to the Bonda tribal community, told PTI he had been
trying to convince the tribal
group to leave for safer ground.
“Many of them are reluctant
to leave their huts. The identified 2,000 tribal people (who
must move) have never come
down the hills in their lifetime,”
said Sisa.(AFP)
that some protesters were paid
or bussed in from the mainland.
Crunch negotiations between
protesters and Beijing-backed
city officials were scheduled
for Friday but fell apart on
Thursday after the government
pulled out, blaming protesters
for threatening to expand their
campaign. “The meeting and
the dialogue should be based on
the decision made by the National People’s Congress Stand-
ing Committee on August 31,”
chief secretary Carrie Lam told
reporters in Guangzhou where
she is attending a trade forum.
Lam’s comment referred to
a decision adopted by China’s
rubber stamp parliament that
candidates would have to be

N. Korea says talks with South
‘all but scrapped’
Seoul
N
orth Korea’s state media said yesterday that high-level
talks with Seoul were now all but scrapped over the launch
of anti-Pyongyang propaganda leaflets from the South, which
triggered an exchange of fire across the tense border. The two
Koreas had agreed a week earlier to work on resuming a formal high-level dialogue that has effectively been suspended for
seven months, raising hopes of a thaw in strained relations.
But the two Koreas traded heavy machine-gun fire across their
border on Friday, prompted by the North Korean military trying to shoot down balloons carrying the leaflets that activists
launched from the South. Some rounds fell on the Southern
side, which then responded with high-calibre machine gun
fire. No casualties were reported on the South’s side, and none
are believed to have taken place in the North.”
US drone strike kills four in NW Pak
Peshawar
US drone strike killed at least four militants in a restive
northwestern Pakistani tribal area on the Afghan border
yesterday, officials said, raising the toll from a series of attacks
this week to 29. The unmanned aircraft hit on the Shawal area
came two days after a separate strike also killed four people.
“The US drone fired two missiles at a vehicle and killed at least
four militants, including a key local commander,” a senior
security official told AFP. The official said the drone strike
took place around sunse while another official said that those
killed included local and foreign militants. There has been a
spike in drone attacks in North Waziristan this month with
analysts suggesting it could be linked to intelligence regarding a high-value target. The semi-autonomous tribal region
has for years been a hideout for Islamist militants, including
Al-Qaeda and the homegrown Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan
(TTP) as well as foreign fighters such as Uzbeks and Uighurs.

were young Bahrainis along with
a sizeable number of expatriates
who took part in 800 metres of

An action from the race
Shaikh Hamad took advantage
of some bad luck that hit a pair
of his fiercest rivals to register
the fine start to what promises
to be another highly competitive season. After topping timesheets in
practice and qualifying, defending champion Salah Salahuddin
had a blown engine in his camouflage green Honda CIVIC,
while Abdulaziz Ashkanani
could not make the most of the
ultra-quick pace he displayed
in his Honda S2,000 early in
the evening, as he gradually
faded to a non-classification in
race two. Shaikh Hamad was
engaged in a heated battle with
Salahuddin for the number two
position early in race one, with
Ashkanani surprising the field
with a solid lead in front. The
pair gained the advantage later
on, and Shaikh Hamad was
eventually assured the victory
with only a few laps remaining
following Salahuddin’s engine
problem and Ashkanani’s own
troubles. Shaikh Hamad (20
minutes 49.652 seconds) was
comfortable ahead of Karimi
(+23.554 seconds) in a Honda
CRX in second and Ghuloom
(+33.819) driving a Honda
CIVIC in third to complete the
podium. Pole-sitter Raed Himmo (Honda CRX), Ashkanani
and Salahuddin were classified
fourth to sixth, respectively.

INDIA COMEBACK
West Indies implode as hosts level series
New Delhi
ndia relied on their bowlers to stage a remarkable
recovery scripting a comfortable 48-run win in the second
cricket One-day international
against the West Indies to level
the five-match series 1-1, at
Feroz Shah Kotla yesterday.
Chasing a 264-run target, West
Indies were cruising at one
stage as they were 170 for two
in the 36th over before their
innings fell apart on a sluggish Ferozshah Kotla track.
India defended the total despite West Indies’ early domination as opener Dwayne
Smith hit a career-best 97.
However, once Smith was dismissed Indian bowlers called
the shots, causing a batting
collapse. From a comfortable
170 for two, the Caribbean
side lost their last eight wickets for just 45 runs to be all out
for 215 in 46.3 overs. Mohammed Shami (4/36) recorded
his career-best figures while
all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (3/44) and leg-spinner
Amit Mishra (2/40) snared five
wickets between them as the
inept technique of the Caribbeans against spinning deliv-
I
eries was exposed thoroughly.
Electing to bat, India had
posted a competitive 263
for seven as Suresh Raina hit
a sparkling 62 while Virat
Kohli (62) returned to form
with his first half-century in
eight months. Raina carried
his splendid T20 form into the
match and Kohli regained his
lost touch partly at his home
ground as the two batsmen
added 105 runs for the fourth
wicket after a sedate start by In-
India beat West
Indies by 48runs
dia. Skipper Mahendra Singh
Dhoni contributed in India’s
total with his unbeaten 51 off
40 balls while Ambati Rayudu
scored 32, batting at number
three, a place where Kohli
usually bats. In his trademark
style, Dhoni hit a six and a four
off paceman Jerome Taylor to
complete his 56th half-century
in the last over of the innings.
West Indies opener Smith
missed out on his maiden
ODI century by just three runs
and his dismissal in the 36th
over changed the complexion
of the match. The two teams
will now travel to Visakhapatnam for the third ODI on
Tuesday. The West Indies
looked like taking it away from
the hosts as the two openers
– Smith and Darren Bravo —
settled nicely after getting a
measure of the pitch and the
bowlers.
They easily took the team to
a comfortable 64 in 13 overs
without loss. Shami brought
relief for India when the first
ball of the 14th over slightly
brushed the stump, took the
bail off, and Bravo was forced
to start his walk back to pavilion. The left-hander took 44
balls for his 26 but his stand
with Smith gave West Indies
an ideal start. The Windies
openers did not exactly set the
stage on fire but hardly gave
anything to India. The match
was on ever keel as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and
spinners toiled hard initially.
They did not leak many runs
but did not get wickets either.
Getting quick runs was tough
on the Kotla pitch but Kieron
Pollard did not hesitate to
swing his arms. The burly batsman clobbered a six off Yadav
and also hit Bhuvneshwar for a
four, causing anxiety in the rival camp.

Keane leads Irish rout of Gibraltar Yao, Liu strike gold for China
Republic of Ireland’s James McClean (right) vies for the ball against
Gibraltar’s Scott Wiseman.
Dublin
obbie Keane scored a hattrick as the Republic of
Ireland made easy work of
beating minnows Gibraltar
7-0 in a Euro 2016 qualifier at
Dublin’s Lansdowne Road yesterday. Victory saw the Republic make it two wins from two
matches ahead of Tuesday’s
Group D clash away to world
champions Germany. For Gibraltar, European football governing body UEFA’s 54th and
youngest member nation, it
was their second straight 7-0
R
drubbing after they went down
by the same scoreline against
Poland in their first competitive match last month. Given
Keane’s quickfire treble put
Martin O’Neill’s men 3-0 up inside 18 minutes, against a side
with just two full-time players,
Gibraltar did relatively well to
avoid a double-figure defeat.
Gibraltar, with a population of
fewer than 30,000 people and
just 600 registered footballers,
were not expected to offer
much in the way of resistance
but did at least keep the score to
3-0 before half-time. However,
the floodgates opened after the
break as James McClean scored
twice, Gibraltar keeper Jordan
Perez put through his own net
and Wes Hoolahan made it 7-0
before the hour mark.
It took the Republic just
six minutes to score their first
goal when Hoolahan played in
Aiden McGeady behind leftback Joseph Chipolina and
his square ball set up Keane to
strike his 63rd international
goal. McClean then saw a shot
well-saved by Perez but the
second goal was not long in
coming, when Keane ran on to
Hoolahan’s pass to make it 2-0
against a static defence. Keane
then scored his third goal in 12
minutes with a penalty when
referee Leontios Trattou pointed to the spot after the hardpressed Perez tripped Hoolahan.Unsurprisingly, some of
the Republic’s initial urgency
waned at this point, although
Perez made a fine fingertip save
to keep out McGeady’s powerfully-struck shot and leave the
score 3-0 to the Republic at
half-time. But within 60 seconds of the re-start, the Irish
had their fourth goal, with the
34-year-old Keane, now playing for the LA Galaxy, squaring
to Wigan’s McClean, who duly
tapped in as Gibraltar appealed
for an offside flag that never
came. (AFP)
Yao Jinnan (centre) reacts after her winning results.
Nanning
ao Jinnan and Liu Yang
upset the established order as they claimed gold for
hosts China with their maiden
individual titles at the world
gymnastics
championships
yesterday. Yao, 19, pipped defending champion and compatriot Huang Huidan in the
women’s uneven bars for her
first world crown, which follows her four-gold rampage at
the Asian Games last month.
And Liu, 18, stunned Olympic and world champion Arthur Nabarrete Zanetti of
Brazil on the men’s rings in
a show of strength that lifted
him from last year’s fourth
Y
place. Yao, sixth on the uneven bars last year, outdid
Huang in qualifying and she
carried her momentum into
the eight-way final at the
Guangxi Gymnasium in Nanning. As the last performer,
Yao dazzled with high-level
pirouetting and aerial skills
and finished with a lofty
double layout somersault. She
earned 15.633 points, beating 18-year-old Huang by a
razor-slim 0.067 points. Russian Daria Spiridonova came
in third at 15.283.
Yao won balance beam silver and team bronze at the
2011 worlds when she was
also third in the all-around.
But, dogged by a thigh injury, she failed to medal at
the 2012 Olympics. Liu, who
contributed to China’s men’s
team victory over Japan with
a top rings score, outpointed
the 24-year-old Zanetti in
both difficulty and execution.
Liu collected 15.933 points
against Zanetti’s 15.733.
Another Chinese, You Hao,
tied for third spot with Russia’s Denis Abliazin. In the
other apparatus events, North
Korea’s Olympic champion
Hong Un-Jong won the women’s vault, beating all-around
champion Simone Biles of
the United States into second
spot. (AFP).

Federer outguns Djokovic in Shanghai Masters
FEDERER VANQUISH
Shanghai
feisty Roger Federer overcame Novak Djokovic in
a gripping Shanghai Masters
semi-final yesterday, ending
the Serb’s incredible winning
streak in China and his hopes
of clinching a third successive
title. A brilliant attacking display from the 17-times Grand
Slam winner, who served with
aggression and spent much of
his time at the net, unsettled
the world number one for a 6-4,
6-4 win. Djokovic, the reigning champion in Shanghai who
clinched his fifth China Open
title last week, was gunning for

Chinese soil in his first match
with Federer since their epic
Wimbledon final. Both players
were looking to unnerve each
other early on, with Djokovic
attempting riskier groundstrokes to counter Federer
confronting him at the net.
Every point was greeted with
exuberant cheers in Shanghai’s
packed Qizhong Tennis Center,
and the stadium erupted when
Federer broke serve on his second break-point in the fifth
game. Djokovic saved the first
break-point by finding a way
past Federer -- who was again
at the net -- but gave away his
serve with a weak backhand
slice moments later. He then
earned his sole break-point of
the set in the next game, which
Federer saved. The 33-year-old
Swiss then produced a perfect
serving game at his next opportunity, firing four successive
aces to march to a 5-3 lead as
he closed in on the set with another ace.
Federer carried his ruthless
approach into the early stages
of the second set, breaking
in the first game with a lifting
groundstroke that was beyond
Djokovic’s right. Djokovic
staged a valiant attempt to
break as he was losing 3-5 with
some incredible net-play as the
pair tussled at deuce. But Federer recovered and claimed
set and match in one hour 36
minutes. Federer improved to
19-17 against Djokovic with the
result, and will overtake Rafael
Nadal to claim second place in
the rankings next week on the
back of his run in Shanghai.
Federer’s best showing at the
Masters 1000 event was as runner up in 2010, although he did

Flying Dutchman leads Volvo fleet
Alicante
Dutch team led by 51-year-old six-time veteran Bouwe
Bekking led the seven-strong Volvo Ocean Race fleet
out of Alicante for the start of their nine-month offshore
marathon - straight into a Mediterranean storm yesterday.
The weather forecast issued by race organisers a few hours
before the 66 sailors set off at 1200 GMT will have carried
bad memories for many of the fleet. In the last edition of
the 41-year-old event, previously known as the Whitbread
Round the World Race, two boats were nursed back to
shore and eventually retired from the opening leg to Cape
Town because of a broken mast and a delaminated bow respectively. One of them was led by the British skipper Ian
Walker who is again at the helm of Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s boat, Azzam. This time, all of the fleet are sailing in a
one-design Volvo Ocean 65 boat which has been built for
durability rather than outright speed after the 2011-12 event
was marred by a string of breakages. Bekking will join Swede
Roger Nilson as the only man to have competed in seven editions of a race that is generally acknowledged in the sport as
crewed sailing’s toughest test.

Johnson targets Pak sweep
Abu Dhabi
ustralia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson wants to complete a cleansweep over Pakistan today to recapture the
world’s top ranking and provide a tonic ahead of the 2015
World Cup. Australia won the first one-dayer in Sharjah by
93 runs on Tuesday and then took an unbeatable 2-0 lead by
winning the second match in Dubai on Friday by five wickets. Steve Smith hit a maiden hundred while Glenn Maxwell
made a fighting 76 to anchor Australia’s batting. Spearhead
Johnson took three wickets in each game, catching Pakistan napping in spin-friendly conditions. Australia can also
regain the world number one ranking if they win the final
game, overtaking South Africa who had briefly displaced
India. “We want to win 3-0 and that is our goal now,” said
Johnson. “We have won the series and we want to keep going, keep playing good cricket because we’ve got the World
Cup coming next year and so we have to stay at our best.”
Australia have now claimed four consecutive one-day series
wins over Pakistan, winning 3-2 in United Arab Emirates in
2009, 5-0 in Australia a year later and 2-1 in UAE in 2012.

Pornanong grabs three-shot lead
Kuala Lumpur
hailand’s in-form Pornanong Phatlum shot
six-under-par-65 yesterday to
seize a three-stroke lead on the
third day at the Sime Darby
LPGA Malaysia. Pornanong
surged to the top of the leaderboard after firing a string of
birdies while others struggled
in humid conditions at Kuala
Lumpur Golf and Country
Club. The Thai star notched an
impressive eight birdies, bettering the seven she notched
Friday to compile an aggregate
score of 14-under 199. Pornanong picked up seven shots
over her first 10 holes, but then
suffered a lapse with bogeys on
the par-five 12th and 16th before she holed her final birdie
on 17. “I don’t know why I was
nervous (on the back nine).
But I kept my concentration
(and) I putted well including a
10-foot putt on the eighth,” the
24-year Thai player said. “Of
course I will try hard to win. I
hope I can do well. For Sunday,
going into the final round I

will just play my game and play
shot by shot.”
Meanwhile Japan’s Ayako
Uehara played another strong
round to sit in second place on
11-under total after a round of
69, following her 63 on Friday.
“Very tough pin position and
distance. But I think I had a
good round,” she said. South
Korea’s Chella Choi and Feng
Shanshan of China are one
shot behind, alongside New
Zealand teen Lydia Ko and
overnight leader Ryu So-Yeon,
who is now forced to play
catch-up. Another Thai, Ariya

from 35th with a great round
of 64. But world number one
Stacy Lewis continued to slip
down the field. After opening

No Ebola date change for 2015
Africa Cup
Rabat
frican football’s governing body CAF insisted yesterday the January 17-February 8 tournament would go
ahead as scheduled despite hosts Moroccan demands for a
postponement over the deadly Ebola epidemic. Moroccan
health officials fear the biennial, 16-nation, three-week African football showpiece could trigger a spread of the deadly
virus. Dubbing Ebola “a major health problem”, an advisor to
Moroccan Sports Minister Mohammed Ouzzine reiterated
the country’s reluctance to host the tournament. Organisers
CAF, the Confederation of African Football, later insisted
that there would be no change in the scheduling of the tournament. CAF “confirms that there is no change in the schedule of its competition and events. We would like to note that
since the first edition of the Africa Cup in 1975, this cup has
never been delayed or cancelled”, the Cairo-based body said
in a statement. The demand to delay the continent’s footballing showcase has been lodged with CAF.

Stade Francais beat Racing Metro
Paris
tade Francais won bragging rights in the Parisian
derby battle with Racing-Metro, running out 23-19
victors in a tight, niggly Top 14 match yesterday. Stade
made Racing, who had two players sin-binned, pay for
their first-half ill-discipline, half-backs Jules Plisson and
Julien Dupuy hitting six penalties between them, the latter also converting Julien Arias’ try. Racing managed to
score three tries, two converted, through centre Alexandre Dumoulin, South African fly-half Johan Goosen and
his replacement Benjamin Dambielle, but could have lost
by more as Plisson and Dupuy missed 14 points with the
boot. Plisson kicked two early penalties to take Stade out
to 6-0.

“Superclasico” friendly in Beijing
yesterday. Journeyman Diego
Tardelli was the unlikely hero
with his first two goals for Brazil
as Messi fluffed his lines with a
tame spot-kick at the Bird’s Nest
stadium. Atletico Mineiro striker
Tardelli, 29, put Brazil ahead on
28 minutes, before Messi curled
his soft penalty attempt close to
goalkeeper Jefferson just before
half-time. And Tardelli was on
target again midway through
the second half as Brazil restored
pride after the World Cup, when
the hosts were hammered in the
semis while Argentina reached
the final. Argentina were on top
early in the match and Sergio
Aguero fired an inviting early
chance over the bar before Angel
Di Maria threatened with a drive
from distance. But it was Tardelli
who broke the deadlock when he
pounced on a loose ball and volleyed past Argentina goalkeeper
Sergio Romero on 28 minutes.
Brazil superstar Neymar should
have made it 2-0 shortly afterwards but after wriggling his
way free on goal, he made a hash
of his shot and the ball rolled
harmlessly wide.
The game had come alive and
Argentina got a golden chance to
equalise when Danilo was judged
to have fouled Di Maria in the
box, prompting angry Brazilian players to surround Chinese
referee Fan Qi. Messi looked
certain to bury the spot-kick but
the four-time world player of the
year shot too close to Brazilian
‘keeper Jefferson, who dived to
his right for a simple stop. It was
the Barcelona icon’s second penalty miss in two weeks after he
also missed one for his club last
month against Levante. Filipe
Luis and Di Maria had chances
at either end as the second half
started energetically, and Oscar
went close with a free kick after Martin Demichelis chopped
down Neymar. (AFP)
