Pharmacist Rita Schmelzle, 63, had the procedure, which was carried out using the minimally invasive (MIS) technique, done at German Orthopaedic Hospital by founder Dr Heinz Roettinger. The mother-of-two, from Aalen in northern Germany, is walking after Monday’s operation and should be able to return home within the next week. “I could have done this anywhere in the world, including the US and Europe, but chose Bahrain because I trust Dr Roettinger and this hospital,” she said from her room at the facility in Salmaniya. I conducted extensive research on global medical facilities and surgeons, but once I had studied the facilities and after-care quality available in Bahrain I knew it was the perfect fit for me.” Dr Roettinger had earlier conducted a similar procedure on her knees. “I have been very satisfied with what he O rient Motors, a subsidiary of Zayani Motors, has unveiled amazing offers on a range of vehicles. n Ms Schmelzle with Dr Roettinger By MANDEEP SINGH had then done and that is why I felt very confident to come to Bahrain alone, leaving behind my sons, aged 28 and 32 years, and my doctor husband,” she said. Dr Roettinger, among the most experienced and well-reputed surgeons in the technique, is known for developing a new approach to THR and devising a modified split surgical table that accommodates the correct leg position during the operation. Access “MIS for THR is muscle-sparing, as instead of cutting through muscle as with traditional approaches, we access the hip joint by passing between muscles in the thigh and hip,” he said. “Less muscle damage means less pain, less blood loss and a faster recovery.” Dr Roettinger said since he first began using the approach, he found his patients were able to return to daily activities without the traditional pain and rehabilitation time seen with other procedures. “MIS is more commonly used in minor operations, but having performed more than 5,000 THR operations, I am confident that Ms Rita, who is already up and about, will be able to travel back to Germany soon.” The hospital, which opened a little more than a year ago, is the only one of its kind in the Gulf, equipped with latest facilities, including some not readily available in Germany, according to Dr Roettinger. “Its advanced infrastructure and extremely high standards of post-operative care have been deciding factors for Ms Rita to make the decision to come to Bahrain,” he said. He said the hospital’s equipment meant the standard down time of a patient had decreased to a mere day in most cases. “Our message to the public in Bahrain and the neighbouring countries is clear – do not travel abroad for such procedures since world class facilities are available right at your doorstep.” mandeep@gdn.com.bh In line with their promotions for the season, the dealership is offering a range of Jinbei buses along with Admiral and Grand Tiger pick-ups at reduced prices. Hospital best for baby care Vet Jennie answers your questions about pet care in this weekly advice column, created in partnership with the Bahrain Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA). We will also be highlighting each week some of the animals in the BSPCA sanctuary, in the hope of finding each of them a loving home. Question: My cat seems to have black dots under her chin. I have established they’re not fleas or the like. Are they serious? Answer: It sounds to me as if your cat has a case of feline acne or blackheads. The cause of this is not known but we do know that some cats are more prone than others. Certain skin conditions, for example allergies, can exacerbate the occurrence of blackheads/acne. Like other skin conditions, treatment of feline acne is often based on controlling the problem rather than establishing and curing the condition. Strange as it may seem, some cats are allergic to plastics – try changing your cat’s food and water bowl to something made from ceramic, metal or glass. If the dish is shallow, this will keep your cat’s chin clean as will regular cleaning of the area. If you do not see any improvement, contact your vet. Controlling the problem with medicated shampoos, gels or creams may resolve the issue. If this doesn’t help, antibiotics or anti-inflammatory steroids R n Lara ... loves to have her tummy rubbed. Dr Chandran’s exclusive visit to the hospital takes place from Saturday to September 18. Having a newborn baby, especially if it’s the first, could cause parents a lot of stress if they don’t know what is considered medically normal. Dr Chandran can advise parents on what to look out for in a newborn and when it’s necessary to see a doctor. Monitoring On average, most babies weigh 2.5kg if they’re born at term, which means after 37 weeks. If they weigh significantly lower, the baby may be labelled as a growth-retarded one and should require a doctor’s attention for the first few months. “If a baby weighs more than 4kg, then it is labelled Large for Gestational Age (LGA), usually a result of a diabetic mother,” says Dr Chandran. “At this weight, risks include birth injuries and low blood sugar or hypoglycaemia, and should require immediate medical attention, monitoring and early feeding,” Dr Chandran adds. Temperature is usually a problem in preterm or growth retarded babies. Normally, babies born at term have a special fat called Brown Fat which is used to generate heat. Preterm and growth restricted babies do not have this fat and are susceptible to hypothermia. “These babies need to be well-clothed with a cap and mittens to avoid heat loss in their head and limbs,” says Dr Chandran. “Since we’re in a warm country, cotton clothes and close monitoring of the baby’s temperature should be maintained to avoid overheating,” he adds. Early introduction of breastfeeding and a mother’s wellbeing are crucial to initiating let down. Breastfeeding should be continued for as long as 24 months, since the high quality protein it contains is richer in quality than formula or cow’s milk. Milk should be produced at the rate of 600ml to 800ml per day through infancy and parents should check if the baby is drinking enough by monitoring weight gain and satiation cues.
