Cast on 35 stitches. Repeat (k3, p1) until the
whole thing is as long as your hand is wide, plus
about an inch. Cast off all stitches. Darn in the
ends and enjoy.

If this pattern had one more stitch, the purl
stitches for each round would fall into line with
each other. They would be “in phase”, as it were.
Instead, they are out of phase and slant up and to
the left. So, they are left out of phase.
